[QUOTE="ogvampire"]

[QUOTE="HuusAsking"]Thing is, some of the protesters have a point in that NPD's numbers are skewed for one specific region, and trends don't always pass across regions. That's why the November console sales numbers are still in dispute. Though NPD may say the 360 outsold, that was only in North America. For all we know, a big Japan and/or Europe push could've still pushed the PS3 ahead globally (as VGC at least claims). We just don't know for sure, and there may be no absolute way to know (since the absolute numbers are probably trade secrets).OhSnapitz

why are november numbers in dispute?

npd reported the sales, companies released reports regarding said sales... vgchartz matched the sales numbers from those same reports

The numbers are in dispute because cow fanboys (just the fanboys) can't fathom that their precious PS3 is getting (or was getting) outsold by the 360. It just defy's the laws of Physics, the laws of man and the laws of the Church that something could outsell the PS3. :|

oh yeah, thats right. i forgot about 'who sold most WW in Nov' discussion

This won't stop the FANBOYS from using VGC whenever it benefits their argument.

Fixed. Not cool to throw all the blame to a single faction.

Look, VG chartz isn't an exact science, but it's a relatively good rough estimate, that's all.clubsammich91

But VGC is being used as a source. As far as anybody who cares about sales should be concerned; it is the same as linking through a chain of forum posts which amount to nothing more than hearsay.

I guess I could throw wild speculation out there and then correct it when the official numbers come out but I believe they call that a folly.

I just want to know why people think that having a website makes you a valid source for the games industry.

Lack of alternatives, apparently.

a trend there is how vgcharts is always higher.

so why do they always guess too high? consider this: you all knew that both toys'r'us and FRICK'N WALMART are both not counted by npd because they don't pay the membership fee right? thats right- the totals npd gives doesn't count the biggest retailer in video games, walmart.

why don't we just go by shipping numbers? sure it doesn't show how many games/systems have been bought NOW but we all know that any product shipped will be bought eventually. and furthermore, any console shipped is a console the manufacturer has made money on.

Well, remember guys :

  1. The NPD just represents a portion of UNITED STATES Sales
  2. The NPD is NOT the entire United States.

The NPD is very limited, not even Walmart or Amazon are included, not to mention the Entire United States.

It's a very nice tool, but we need to realize it's limitations, including that games do sell worldwide, and Walmart, Amazon, etc do sell games.

SolidTy

interesting. Got a link for that. Would be nice to know games like Uncharted 2 actually sold more than posted, it deserves it.

[QUOTE="XenogearsMaster"]NPD is 30% off stated by a Sega representative and VGC collects world wide sales.blue_hazy_basic
Or is the sega rep maybe not right? Remember NPD=sales, whereas Sega would be talking about its shipped figures. Do you have a link so I can see?

You are correct. Cookie for you. When you listen to the actual podcast of the Sega guy, you can tell he is comparing to internal Sega numbers which would by definition be shipped/sold to stores, not retail/sold to consumers.

A few NA retailers vs. a rough estimate of total worldwide sales. Neither are too accurate.

lol at some of you guys. Are you guys seriously trying to discredit NPD?

BTW, have you guys ever heard of something called extrapolating data? Cause that's what NPD does for retailers like Wal Mart.

Notice that 100% of those numbers have VGC as being higher. It should also be noted that a person working for Sega (Constantine something said in in a 4 Guys 1 Up podcast. I forget which one, but goto the RSS and search for Constantine) who has access to actual numbers said that NPD tend to be up to 30% less than real numbers. If VGC's sampling results in higher than NPD numbers and NPD numbers are lower than reality, does that make VGC more credible or less credible?

It's actually not. VG Chartz is a site run by people with ZERO real connections to the gaming industry, based on STOLEN data interpreted by people with NO FORMAL TRAINING in Statistics. In other words, it's theft combined with guesswork combined with bad math. What's worse, because VGC pretends they're a data source, they remove credibility from actual data tracking operations (such as NPD) -AND- they encourage both people and companies to invest time and money into bad data. VGC is a cancer for anyone who cares about actual sales data... it's crap being spewed out to fuel fanboy wars, while doing irreparable financial harm to the highly educated men and women who have made a career of data gathering and analysis.

um.... well yeah, NPD is just America, people trying to use it for WW sales fail immediately
