Call it hints 2.0.

Nintendo is working on a gameplay system meant to ease the pain of completing a difficult game, without watering it down so much that it turns hardcore gamers off.

The new system, described in a patent filed by Nintendo Creative Director Shigeru Miyamoto on June 30, 2008, but made public today, looks to solve the issue of casual gamers losing interest in a game before they complete it, while still maintaining the interest of hardcore gamers.

The solution would turn a game into a full-length cut scene of sorts, allowing players to jump into and out of the action whenever they wanted. But when played this way, gamers would not be able to save their progress, maintaining the challenge of completing a game without skipping or cheating. It would also allow players to bring up in-game hint videos and skip directly to particular scenes in games.

While the patent doesn't describe how the automated gameplay (referred to as "digest moving image" in the patent) would be presented to gamers, either as a true cut-scene or as a recorded play-through, it does state that the playthrough will likely come from a game developers playing of the game.

In a game, this new play ****would be broken up into three options: Game, digest and scene menu, according to the patent.

Game allows gamers to play the game in the normal way, though they can bring up video hints whenever they get stuck. These hints will appear in a screen that pops up in the top right corner of the screen.

Digest allows gamers to watch a video of a game developers play through of the game, which lays out the storyline and "flow of the scenario" from beginning to the end. At any time a player can press a button to jump into the action of the scene currently being shown. This is done by loading game saves downloaded automatically through a network.

Players will start the scene with the appropriate character attribute boosts and items for that part of the game. Saving is not allowed in digest mode.

The scene menu allows gamers to skip directly to a specific scene to play, without having to watch the digest or load a saved game.

This patent, if implemented correctly, could successfully help gaming make the leap from narrative fun, to something more open-ended and free range, the first real sandbox video game.

Imagine being able to play a game with all of the benefits of characters, story and goals, but without having to spend 10 to 20 hours of your life to enjoy doing so.

Of course, that's the best case scenario. The worst, is that this turns gaming into an interactive cut-scene, removing all of pleasure of achievement from gaming and instead turning it into a glorified demo.

As described above, in the present embodiment, when a player cannot find how to solve the "puzzle" which is set in the game, the player is allowed to view, in the scene, moving images for indicating how to solve the puzzle when the player desires to. Therefore, a player that cannot find how to solve the "puzzle" may not become stuck with the game, and reduction, due to the puzzle being unsolved, in motivation for clearing the game may be prevented. Thus, a player unaccustomed to a game or a player that does not have a lot of time for game play is allowed to play and clear the game to the end. Further, how to solve the "puzzle" is indicated as "moving images" by using an actual example in which the puzzle is actually solved, and therefore a player knows, for certain, how to actually move (operate) the player character. Therefore, for example, a player that cannot know, from a hint represented by only character information, how to solve the puzzle may not become stuck with the game, and may be allowed to play the game to the end.

TL;DR Nintendo is dumbing it down even more.

Your not seeing the point though. The fact is that instead of dumbing down the game for experienced players, it is increasing the aid to new players.

So, in theory, if a game is difficult an experienced gamer plays and replays a level in order to find the best method possible to beat it. Some gamers get turned off by this challenge or get too frustrated. By having this hint button, players of lower skill can continue throughout the game.

If this is Nintendo's answer for keeping the casual happy and not pissing off the hardcore, I like it.

so It's basically a video archive filled with clips of people completing puzzles and whatnot.

I'm fine as long as I'm not forced to use it. I'll solve my own damn puzzles.

I just want them to add difficulty modes or something, they've been getting easier and easier. Hopefully the next one is more original like Majora's Mask was too.

I didn't mind TP being easy, I just hope Nintendo keeps the core mechanics in future Zelda games, or remakes A Link to the Past.

Man did I lose my marbles on this one... Seems like a youtube of sorts for the game, specified for the game? Where you get archives or clips of hints and other pieces of data given to you from either your own storage device or connected to a server that allows you instantly to obtain the information necessary to proceed with the game in some function? Phew... *wipes sweat drop*

I facepalmed when I read it. Seriously, this isnt a hint, this is a step by step on how to solve puzzles, Nintendo is pretty much packing in a video guide on how to solve puzzles, this isnt dumbing down, this isnt catering to casuals this is taking any challenge the game may pose away.

I don't like this at all, if Ninty can stoop this low who knows what they are capable of doing next.

Edit: May have read it wrong, seems after carefully reading it it isnt waht I thought *Phew* I was worried.

did it ever occur to you that you might not be forced to view those clips? You could still solve the puzzles on your own. The option is just there for casuals who get stuck.

Lame. Find it out on your own. I remember it took me almost a week to beat the last level in Goldeneye and I never used a strategy guide and I didn't even have a computer back then.

EDIT: Misleading title. I was hoping for innovative gameplay.

Yes I actually prefere this way of casualization since its optional, and it doesn't directly effect existing Zelda fans since they can just opt to not use the feature, it gets my thumbs up.

As much as that would be cool, its not good to get your hopes up from a few patent images. :P It could just be a poorly drawn sword, but some new weapon types and such would be a welcome addon.

As it is an optional feature, I'm good with it.

However I must ask, why does Nintendo have to keep the casuals happy?? Zelda was one of the fewer series that wasn't as corrupted by the new aim Nintendo is taking, but now it's screwed up. I see a flood of the older Zeldas being released again with this new feature

I keep hoping that Nintendo will actually redeem themselves and give me a reason to buy a Wii. As it stands now, there are only a few titles that even remotely interest me. A quality Zelda though, is something that could make me go ahead and buy one. However, this does not bode well from what I gather. Why can't they just leave Zelda alone instead of trying to reintroduce it so it will appeal to the Wii-Fit crowd?

The point of Zelda is figuring out the puzzles yourself, why are you even playing Zelda if you can't do that? Seriously, this is a stupid useless feature.

Making Zelda easier then it already was in TP. Fail.. Just fail. Seriously. Zelda in space has gotten flop written all over it. Nintendo suck as usuall. Appealing to casuals is not the way to go with a zelda game. Zelda fans across the globe are going to be waiting years for a Zelda game that takes 5 hours to beat, requires zero brain power and is a total cake walk to beat. Soon enough Nintendo will have us all playing games even a toddler can handle. All in the name of casuals ofcourse. The ones that don't give 2 hoots about quality gaming.

Sheep wanted to know why Nintendo is ruining gaming?.. Well you've answered your own question.. This is not innovative, it's called dumbing down. Soon enough(if they haven't already) all nintendo games and any game that happens to be on the Wii. Will be casualized(Made crap.)

*looks at Link's Crossbow training*

Don't worry Nintendo is doing everything to not leave you alone.

Next: Link Kart, Link Party, Link Strikers

Then hardcore gamers should rejoice cause that's the cinematic experience they've been wanting forever!Zhengi

Despite me not liking the 3D Zelda's as much as A Link to the Past, this just doesn't seem like the direction the series needs to take. All it needs is a better narrative and deeper gameworld... this... this... I do not like at all.

Nintendo is turning games into a joke. If you don't like playing games, why not just watch a DVD? Better yet, watch a DVD and skip to the ending, because that way you don't have to suffer through the tedium of the plot. Nintendo are a bunch of idiots, and this only proves it further. Maybe they should stop making games altogether and just make DVDs.

So I'm understanding this to mean that they are basically including a video walkthrough of the game for players and then, if you still can't figure it out, they will just do it for you... was nintendo under the impression that zelda was becoming to hard of a game and they needed to make it easier? eh, whatevs.
