Remarkable. I wonder how it's done. Indie_Hitman
Well normally Sony 3d TVs are tuned to their glasses, and the glasses have shutters that alternate very rapidly in order to show your eyes two different images, hence they look 3D when your brain puts them together. Basically if I got this right, the glasses will be tuned to shutter alternatively from each other. So while your glasses will only show your screen, your friend's glasses will show the other screen on the same TV. I also assume the earbuds are so you can both listen to different sound sources too.

I wonder what the screen would look like if you didnt have glasses on

BlancoBX

If you would use it Auto-stereoscopy screens (like in 3DS) people on left side of the screen would see screen 1, people on right side would see screen 2, people on middle would see something between :p MS used that on that demo that people are linking. This pantent probably mostly use of it in glasses

[QUOTE="SaltyMeatballs"][QUOTE="Ravensmash"]http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20009310-1.html Here we go, seems like it's the next big thing.

Holy crap that's even cooler. This is what I imagined they'd all be like without glasses.

Yeah, I think they're both really good concepts - something that interests me much more than just standard 3D. The video of the seamless switch is incredible.

I wonder if you would need something other than a 3D ready TV for this tech. if it could apply directly to current generation 3D TV's this would be an amazing bullet point to add to the list of features. Imagine this, your watching a movie with your friends, but you have seen it 1000 times so pop up the sterioscopic extras menue and watch a commentary while everyone else can enjoy the movie without being interupted! there are alot of neat ideas that could be implemented into this...not just gaming either.

This seems to be a cool idea, and I can see how it works.

It'll basically have a hologram effect. One person will be sitting on one side of the TV while the other person will be sitting on another side of the room. One person will see one part of the picture (the first player) while the other player sees another picture from the other side. It looks to be a great idea on paper, but there are some setbacks. What this means is people need to be sitting at a specific spot by the TV in order tosee the picture correctly If you can't get a good picture from sitting at the end of the couch, you'll need to either sit on the floor or find anohter place to sit. Even then you might not get a clear picture and will probably see te two images be transparent to each other.

However there are ways to fix this. Sony might add a sensor to the TVs that can track where the 3D glasses are (which probably means buying new glasses in order to use this feature).

What also is interesting is this technology could also be used for "true" 3DTVs. There could be a camera on the TV that senses the eyes of the players and shows them a specific 3D image. Even though it's a cool idea, i'll wait for glasses-less TVs to implement this.

Me and my brother just split the cable, ran the image to two TV's and covered up half the screen instead. Don't need no fancy 3D glasses (those don't look very fancy though).

Yeah, porn would be visible blinking between LBP2, since it's 60Hz for each screen they would look transparing to each other :)

Um, no, it wouldn't matter where either person was sitting, for the concept in the Sony patent. Which image you see would be dependent on which pair of glasses, not where you sat. For glasses free auto-stereoscopic screens, each person's position would be important.

It would just be 2d. The whole concept is that you are using the stereoscopic technique to show two seperate images to different people, rather than the more common use of showing a different image to each eye.

It already does work if you think about it. Polarised 3d glasses filter a polarised image to one eye and a different polarised image to the other.

So polarised image 1 goes to filter A on the left eye and polarised image 2 goes to filter B on the right eye. What happens if we put polarised filter A on both eyes of one glasses and polarised filter B on both eyes of a second pair of glasses and have a friend put the second pair on? One person sees Polarised image 1 though the A filters and one person sees polarised image 2 trough the B filters, just like your left eye sees a different image to the right eye through normal polarised 3d glasses, so does the person wearing the different filtered glasses to the person beside him.

sony REALLY hates the tech in the 3DS

gamer-adam1
It's not Nintendo's tech; They just put it where it's useful. The technology has a very narrow viewing angle, making it useless for TV's, though it's perfect for a handheld when the screen's in your face and you're the only one looking at it.

may be these kind of manipulations and tech would make the glasses more appealing in the future, i dun think 3Ds can pull out such kind of idea.

That would be so cool. It goes beyond just split-screen gaming, imagine the possibilities in other ways, for really innovative games. Too bad the market wouldn't be very big for such a title.

That would be cool. However, one issue with that (if it is indeed possible) is that you would have conflicting sounds from the TV show and the video game.

That is actually awesome maybe thats how they will do co op in their new 3D games But it will be useless when newer 3d screens come out and you dont need glasses which is pretty soon since almost all manufacturers have been experimenting with them even a software giant MS is trying things without glasses.

They'll probably be too wimpy to put this out.

Nintendo will take the risk, beat them to their own game and have Sony playing catch up after.

Oonga

This works on the exact same principles as stereoscopic 3D, there's no reason why Sony couldn't implement it in a firmware update. The only issue would be getting the games to work properly, and that shouldn't be much of a hurdle either.

It already works without glasses. In brand new range rovers you have the option to have a screen like this in the dash. The passenger can watch a movie or whatever while the drivers sees the nav or whatever he needs...technologies not new, sony is just patenting a different way of doing it.

I'm pretty sure Sony isn't the first to do this. I think it was on Engadget that had Panasonic I believe talking about developing TVs that would do this exact same thing.

Oh, so Sony promised 3D and 120fps back in when they first announced the PS3 was supposed to be this.
