If Microsoft is indeed shifting developmet to their next gen console already... It would seem that they are quitting this gen a bit early again. Two years seems way too soon... Three years might be about right though.

Not surprising. But since they are likely just starting on R&D, it'll most likely take 2-3 years to even work on it. So i think we'll all ready for new consoles by 2011-2012. They got Reach coming out next year anyway. So im sure they're not in any rush. I personally am not going to worry about it. MS is actually making money off the 360. Unlike the original Xbox. So being in a hurry to beat the competition isn't nearly as important this time.

can't wait to see how it looks, and this one willl probably be he one to last (9+ years) and i'm not suprised really I just wonder how the cows ill react when sony doesn't push the Ps4 until 2 years after XDEven IF it is in another 2 years, that would be SIX years after 360 launched, which would be typical of most consoles from previous generations. How woule that be "too soon"?
But given the trends of this generation, another 3-4 years seems more likely.
What? The Xbox 360 is going to be 4 years old in 11 days (which means it will have nearly outlived its predecessor) and it's still going strong. Two years from now, it will be going on 6 years, which is average for a console's lifespan. That's as long as the PS2 lasted before Sony brought out the PS3.
Besides, MS has already said that they are going to continue to support the Xbox 360 after its successor arrives so there's really nothing to be worried about.

It wouldn't be too soon at all. Anything past 2012-2013 is complete overkill. 2011-2012 sounds good. (2012 so we get time to play our MP games next year)
Are you really surprised by a new console for 2011 or 2012? I don't think they're "shifting development" either. The original Xbox wasn't profitable where's the 360 has been outta the black since early 2007. Trust, as long as there's a market, there will be support for the 360. I think the PS3 has shown that upgrading is a slow and long process.Shattered007I would be VERY surprised at a new console in 2011... unless it came from Nintendo. That is way too early for new consoles from Sony or Microsoft. Frankly, I'd be disappointed with the 360 if a new xbox came that soon. Five years on the market doesn't sound that bad... but in terms of gaming, I'd feel taken advantage of. It seems like we're finally just getting warmed up in terms of great games, and the 360 in particular is already struggling with its pace of great exclusives... The idea of giving up & focusing on the next gen at this point would seem kind of cheap. ESPECIALLY with Natal coming out... I'm sure it's technology that they'll include in the next gen box as well... but I'd rather see them use it to keep this gen fresh.
wow how whould sony counter this when there loosing money with the ps3,any way i still go buy it if it cameout tommorow.

I think this is the more interesting thought. With two major consoles in the market, with sony being one year behind in its life, what will sony do if ms came out with a console in say 2011? They would be forced to release a ps4 within a year right? Otherwise, they would start to be killed in sales.wow how whould sony counter this when there loosing money with the ps3,any way i still go buy it if it cameout tommorow.

Actually, it would be FIVE years... and as I said in my other post, we just have not received as much in this last three years of gaming as we did last gen. I guess they still have time to improve it, but I just have not been impressed with the rate/quality of 360 exclusives in the last 1-2 yrs (with the exception of Forza). There have been some great multiplats, but last gen had great exclusives for all 3 systems. I feel the PS3 is doing the best in terms of exclusives, but even they are just shadows of their former selves compared to last gen. Bottom line... I think I would just like to see MS devote more 1st part focus to their current system before they jump to the next. Then again, their 2010 is already looking a hellova lot better than 2009 did.Even IF it is in another 2 years, that would be SIX years after 360 launched, which would be typical of most consoles from previous generations. Well that'd be cool if true... but they stopped support of the xbox when the 360 dropped, so I'm not so sure. We'll see though.

Hmmm, I think it really depends. I mean, you all forget how many ppl are just now upgrading to 'next-gen'... lol, and all the Wii owners still waiting (j/k!). Point is, the PS3 will have only gained even more popularity by that point... so they would really have to price the nextbox right & balance it out with enough attractive tech. And on top of that, they'd need Sony to F up another console launch, lol... which is very possible, but I don't think Sony will make the same mistake back to back. If the Wii has done anything, it has shown us that having a lead means absolutely nothing. If game developers are ready to move on to next gen already, I'm all for it... but considering how few games have been released so far... and how many game devs have gone bankrupt... just seems too soon in the industry to unleash another gen.[QUOTE="vikingm03"][QUOTE="chessik101"]

Nooooooo. 360 launched in Nov 2005. So in just a few days (as pointed out by Game21) 360 reaches its 4 year mark. Hence again, IF the next console debuts in 2 years, that would make it a SIX year cycle for this console.
And I'm still pretty sure, as most others are, that we won't see the Xbox 720 (tentative name of course) for yet another 3-4 years.

Question is, can Sony even afford to make the PS4 in 2-3 years? Highly doubt it, especially when they've now lost $5 Billion in their gaming division.
Anyway, by the time November 2011 or November 2012 comes about, it would be 6-7 years old by then. I think it's the right time to release a brand new console.:) Plus they won't stop supporting the 360, as MS makes more money off of each 360 system being sold & that more games are coming out for it.
Two years feels just about right, though I'll probably wait a year or two anyway. I just bought this 360 and I'll be damned if I don't get the proper mileage.
[QUOTE="Couth_"]Two years does not seem to soon. Actually it feels just about right.abuabedThis. If the new gen starts say 4 years from now that would be too far imo.
I don't know, in some ways, it feels like this gen has just started.
I mean, there have been good games this gen, but in a way, it kind of feels weak, like it hasn't fulfilled what it should do in order to be ready for another one.
Keep in mind that the consoles of this gen are just now matching the prices of last gen's consoles at launch. These are the prices that the mainstream can afford, so for many people this gen has just started. With all the complaints about console prices and the huge loss of money from Sony and Microsoft to get their hardware out to consumers, what makes you guys think they're in a hurry to start next gen? They'll wait until they're ready, when the technology to make new consoles is cheap enough. If the PS4 released now it would probably cost $900 to consumers, and Sony would probably lose $200 on every console sold. 2-4 gig of RAM, stronger CPU core, stronger GPU, faster motherboard, a more capable cooling system, bigger power supply, possibly motion controller and standard controller... consider the cost of the PS3 now plus all this stuff added to it. It wouldn't be cheap.
This. If the new gen starts say 4 years from now that would be too far imo.[QUOTE="abuabed"][QUOTE="Couth_"]Two years does not seem to soon. Actually it feels just about right.get-ka12

Looking at the upcoming titles I think 2010 will be more than great, also this year has delivered a great amount of games so 2-3 years seems very fine to me.How is that too soon? Did you SEE the new Crytek 3 engine? Why would you NOT what that as soon as possible?

Without those, it just doesn't feel 'complete.'
stop getting your hopes up there wont be a next gen companieds cant afford it with this crysis were having.
I think of the 3 current consoles, x360 will have the shortest lifespan, so Microsoft will probs be first to jump into the next gen pool. I think 3 years. mhsdrake
X360 has been having the shortest lifespan since this gen started lol rrod most don't even last 2 years but non joking around yeah I agree I do see microsoft folding their cards early like they did last gen I just feel sorry for lemmings who trusted.

I dont feel sorry for them, its a good console but it wont have the longevity of the others. Although it did come out a bit earlier so maybe there wont be much difference in the end. It just feels like the Ps3 hardware is still young and developing. Just because a new console is released doesn't mean the previous one isn't supported anymore. Developers continue to make games for the PS2 and Sony is still supporting it.What? THAT'S the point I'm getting at. I agree with everyone that in terms of years it seems about right. But when you compare to past gens, we have not hardly gotten the same gaming mileage out of this gen 3-4 yrs in. It seems like devs are just now starting to get warmed up and we're talking about shifting to a new gen already! Think about the financial position so many developers are in already this gen... I just don't think it's time yet. I understand that MS, and the other console makers as well, just want to make $$$. But I think it's better for the industry as a whole to let devs make the most out of this gen before jumping to a new one. Please Log In to post.
