Are you really surprised by a new console for 2011 or 2012? I don't think they're "shifting development" either. The original Xbox wasn't profitable where's the 360 has been outta the black since early 2007. Trust, as long as there's a market, there will be support for the 360. I think the PS3 has shown that upgrading is a slow and long process.Shattered007Releasing a new X-box while Sony hasn't planned a new one for another year or two will kick things out of balance for both MS, Sony and multiplatform developers.
[QUOTE="The_Game21x"]Just because a new console is released doesn't mean the previous one isn't supported anymore. Developers continue to make games for the PS2 and Sony is still supporting it. And yet the xbox lost support as soon as the 360 was released. Microsoft's business model has not been like Sony's so far... it's more likely to assume they will drop 360 support than not. At least until there are any official announcements. What? The Xbox 360 is going to be 4 years old in 11 days (which means it will have nearly outlived its predecessor) and it's still going strong. Two years from now, it will be going on 6 years, which is average for a console's lifespan. That's as long as the PS2 lasted before Sony brought out the PS3.
Besides, MS has already said that they are going to continue to support the Xbox 360 after its successor arrives so there's really nothing to be worried about.

That might be the case too... especially if you own more than one console! And yet I still feel like I got more gaming out of my ps2 & xbox! The reason why it feels too soon is just because this has been an expensive generation, a lot of people put more money into this generation then any previous gens.

Blame Square Enix, not the console makers. Or it may well be gaming development in general. We ask so much from them, and companies like S-E have to top each of their previous iterations (and they now have 12 and change to top). It's probably straining their creative departments to the limits to avoid looking like a repeat.@get-ka12
Yeah, I see your point. It is the same for me, no complete gen without a good FF game. In previous gen we used to play FF at launch but this gen...not very much.

You clealy don't understand the differences between this generation and the last. Xbox 180 was doing very porrly in the market, was severly behind PS2 and only just ahead of Gamecube (not saying much since GC was also doing poorly). But this time around, 360 has a healthier market share, strong 3rd party support, and is actually making MS a profit.
They would not have the same reasons for dropping support like they did before. This gen DOES NOT equal the last gen, which is the premesis fo your flawed assumptions.
If Microsoft is indeed shifting developmet to their next gen console already... It would seem that they are quitting this gen a bit early again. Two years seems way too soon... Three years might be about right though.

Quitting this gen early? The norm up until recently has been 5 years between consoles. The 360 came out in 2005 meaning it has not only outlived the first Xbox, but is also going to live longer than the "norm." Even IF a new Xbox comes out in 2011, that would mean a 6 year life for the 360 AND I think chances are good that MS would NOT kill the 360 the way they did the Xbox.
Frankly, I don't see new consoles starting to come out until 2012. I mean, we have only NOW hit the $299 "sweet spot" that console used to actually LAUNCH at.

Actually, there were two big reasons the Xbox was dropped like a bad habit. ONE, it was a money sink (not the case with the 360--each sale generates a profit). TWO, they ran out of XChips (the GPUs), and nVidia wasn't willing to make anymore (one reason Microsoft went to ATI and then bought the IP outright to ensure they'd have the ability to make more).Look for it Nov. 2012 and that is just dandy with me. MMMMM, MM, can't wait to unpack and play the launch games on a spanking new console. :D
The end is near : Just heard there's one slight problem here. The system will indeed launch on November 21, 2012 but you'll only have to midnight to get all your gaming in before.....

I didn't say Sony dropped support for the PS2. What I did say is that it was on the market six years before its successor was released, which would be a fairly long lifespan for the Xbox 360 if this new Xbox rumor is correct.
And as for those saying MS will drop support for the 360 when the next Xbox is released, don't count on it. The main reason MS killed the Xbox early and stopped supporting it is because it wasn't profitable and had never been in the four years of its existence. The Xbox 360 on the other hand is profitable and MS has stated several times that the Xbox 360 will have a ten year lifespan meaning that they will continue to support it long after its successor is released.

2012 would be 6 years for microsoft. Considering the original xbox only lasted like 4, this is an improvement. If Microsoft is indeed shifting developmet to their next gen console already... I think the ps3 will be here in q4 2012 , and I doubt Microsoft will want to go head to head with it at potentially the same pricepoint. That one year head start for them is critical imo. 6 years between console releases seems like the perfect time anyway for consumers and developer ambitions to keep the industry from stagnating , so q4 2011 would be my best guess. It's have NATALstandard , blu-ray drive (faster) , and better graphics ..... it won't launch with a whole lot besides Forza 4 , butit'll get the sales lead and third party support lead on Sony's box once again and they'll drop some megaton releases when the ps3 hits in 2012. (Bungie's next for example).
There's no reason to stray from what worked so well for them. Why go from 2nd in marketshare this gento potentially 3rd place from day one next gen ? It's not very logical imo.
Looking at the upcoming titles I think 2010 will be more than great, also this year has delivered a great amount of games so 2-3 years seems very fine to me.[QUOTE="abuabed"][QUOTE="get-ka12"]
I don't know, in some ways, it feels like this gen has just started.
I mean, there have been good games this gen, but in a way, it kind of feels weak, like it hasn't fulfilled what it should do in order to be ready for another one.

Yeah, I honestly think the lack of Final fantasy and the lack of good Zelda is getting to me.
Without those, it just doesn't feel 'complete.'
there has been a zelda, twighlight princess on the wii, there has also been a final fantasy this gen, final fantasy 11 was released on the 360, online only mind, but it's still a final fantasy game, be patient my friend, i am sure there will be another zelda on the wii, and you have FF13 to look foreward to[QUOTE="Zero_epyon"][QUOTE="Sgt_Hale"]Dear god another one? maybe. but i think they are working on gamesfor natal. there is 14 launch games you know. thats prolly why ms hasnt put out any new exclusives. they are making good money off each 360 sold. ied say they hang onto the 360 as long as they can. and only start next gen when sony does. which i guess will be 4-5 years
I'm beginning to notice the aging in relation to PC games. Games like Empire Total War, Arma 2 and (of course) Crysis are really pulling the bar for high end graphics away. In another 2-3 years, I'm afraid it will become too noticeable not to change up.whats wrong with the consoles that are out now? theres no need for new consoles anytime soon.. neither ps3 or 360 are anywhere close to being maxed out(well, the 360 is close:P)... i still think we wont see any new console till atleast 2013

Xbox 360 was in planning before the original xbox was released and was in development about a year after, it doesn't mean microsoft has said "okay this generation is over we don't care anymore" it just means they have plans for the future and i bet they do have another xbox in the works and have for a very long time unless there idea of that is natal which in my opinion would be a epic failure. Even sony and nintendo have next generation consoles being worked on right now as we speak.
a 2010 launch would be five years and a 2011 would be six, wheres the problem?
you realize that for games to be ready by either the 2010 or 2011 date they need to be in at least the design stage right now.
It seems they are going all chips in on natal; They want Nintendo's market share.Xbox 360 was in planning before the original xbox was released and was in development about a year after, it doesn't mean microsoft has said "okay this generation is over we don't care anymore" it just means they have plans for the future and i bet they do have another xbox in the works and have for a very long time unless there idea of that is natal which in my opinion would be a epic failure. Don't tell me that they're going to turn into the Wii with crap shovelware:(. They better have some backup in case something like that goes down, like keeping their next gen console more powerful. Also, they shouldn't forget their hardcore gamers either. A lot of them like myself don't want to stand up & kick, punch, throw, or whatever.

If I were MS, I would do the following: 1) Make my next console compatible with Natal, and backwards compatible with X360 games (software or hardware based emulation, doesn't matter) 2) Release said new console winter 2011 3) Keep making X360s bundled with Natal as a low end, HD, motion based system to cater to casuals (hopefully priced around $150 by that time) 4) Push the new console heavily for hardcore gamersI woun't buy a new console until at least 2012 (it feels weird just to type that lol). Only exception is I may buy a Wii again at some point.

M$ Knows their fans. I don't think they would forsake their established hardcore fans, just to try and pull more casuals. I think they will try to expand there fans (what biz wouldn't?!), but they know who they report to. The hardcore gamers are the people who buy an Xbox then buy 20-100 games over the consoles lifespan. That is the people they need the most, as those are the people who bring in the most money.are we sure they are still losing money. I mean i see standalone bluray players for 150 now and we know that the cell chips are at a smaller size now which means much cheaper to produce and better yields.wow how whould sony counter this when there loosing money with the ps3,any way i still go buy it if it cameout tommorow.

Er, I don't know if anyone read my post but -- the "next generation Xbox" is referring to the "Xbox 360". It's an old tagline which has been under Microsoft Games Studios' hiring description since 2006.
There is absolutely no room for speculation based off of this "news".
This is probably a hiring announcement for Reach, if anything.
