The fighting game genre received a much needed shot in the arm last gen [VF5, TTT2, SFVI, BBlaze ect..]. But the question is.. how far will devs take the genre this gen? Will there be a noticeable difference between last gen offerings? Or will devs just add a few more blades of grass or hair follicles?

I would be all over a street fighter like that. I really didn't liked the art style in 4. Just go back to 2d, ifts going to be that weird art that made everyone look weird.

Never really considered the SSB series a Fighting game series perse' but .. It seems to have a following that does. Either way I'm sure a lot of Ninty gamers are looking forward to the next installment.. not a lot coming down the pipeline.

Do fighting games ever really change? There's not a whole lot of room for innovation when you have a legion of crazy fans that get annoyed at minor changes, all they can really do is build on what's already there and try to refine it.

I'd like to see one of the big companies make a new franchise and try a different fighting game style though, not just the standard side on 1 Vs 1 combo/parry etc etc stuff we always get.

I'm the 1st one to mention DOA5 ?

Thats dissapointing considering its the best fighting game so far.

Street Fighter is just too unbalanced and seriously... Why can't I side step Hadokens ? Come on Capcom ! Same goes for every 2D and 2.5D fighting game.

Tekken is unnecessarily complicated. Why on earth would I need to press everysingle button just to perform a combo throw ? And notice how you're completely helpless when you're in a combo ? Not cool !

Mortal Kombat and its non Identical twin, Injustice, is just too unbalanced but atleast its not as technical as street fighter. I'd rather metagame than measure vulnerability and invulnerabilty frame animation (this 60 fps, I have things to do.)

another thing with tekken and Virtua Fighter is they just weren't made with standard controllers in mind. Which sucks because this is the control method 90 % of people use. oh look Cold Play cancelled their concert because theres three empty seats. Oh well... Gamer logic.

I still have to give Soul Calibur a Try. I doubt its better than the boob simulator though but still. Gotta try it.

As for what 8th gen will do for fighting games. Well other than power the consoles haven't changed at all. And I'm not talking about since 5 years ago I mean they've barely done anything for the genre since the freaking 80's ! Just what are we suppose to be expecting from 8th Gen ? Nothing ! perhaps one day street fighter will learn to sidestep. Sidestep !

I don't know about anyone else but I really want to see a next gen DOA.

Actually, if Sony could get Square to revive Bushido Blade, omg.

There's not a lot of places they can go to be honest. SF IV wasn't that much different than 2 all those years ago. Side scrollers are a different matter. They could be modernised.

I reckon sega should bring back Streets of Rage with a lot of environmental damage and choices.

Fighting used to be one of my favorite gaming genres I don't know what happened to them. There used ton of variety.

Tekken was the few fighting games last gen that actually kind of grew and was pretty good to its fan base. Tekken Tag 2 is still awesome. Soul Calibur has fallen badly used to be such a great game I don't know what namco is thinking, they need to return to its roots.

There a few fighting games I would love for to make a return Star Gladitor, Bushido Blade, Rival Schools, Street Fighter EX series, Battle Arena Toshiden, Bloody Roar. Thinking about it makes me kind of sad me and friends used to play these games for hours.

I want an all-female mud wrestling game featuring the most advanced character models, jiggle fx, and mud physics that money can buy. And I want the fighting roster to be made up entirely of real world super models and pop stars like Kate Upton and Katie Perry. And I want monthly bikini DLCs.

Graphics are great and all but fighting games in particular are so much more about the gameplay. On topic though, I'm guessing the biggest differences will come in stages and backdrops, which should be every bit as meticulous as the character models from here on out.

Lol. Maybe they will arbitrarily add Open World and RPG Elements some how and call that the evolution of fighting games... Ha !

Or maybe the niche will just die out.. Like Text Adventures and uhm.... Other dead genres.

So far, only Killer Instinct looks like a great fighting game, imo. SSB4 will most likely be awesome as well. I really want a good fighting game for Wii-U that isn't Smash Bros, though.

yes it is. Unless you're taking the mentality that PS4 is now current gen huh?

Well I'm saying PS4 and Xbox One games are next gen as in not Xbox 360 or PS3.

Also this is a "Next Gen" Fighting Game.

Whats so "Next Gen" about it ?

Other than it being only one an 8th Gen Console. Is there a reason why it wouldn't work on the 360 ?

i was dissapointed in how tekken looked last gen. im hoping that they dont go the f2p route because im not going to pay extra per fighter and my fav isnt a mainline char (christie)

tekken is a bit more complicated than people think it is. most tekken players i played with dont know how to bdc and they whore punishable launchers and sweeps. well half of them dont even know how to bound juggle either and complain how its cheesy as if juggling is a new feature lol

I probably am a Scrub. Okay lets look at this properly. Street Figher isn't so much unbalanced as it is just plain ridiculous.

As for Tekken I wasn't precise enough. Its the Controls that are too Complicated. Playing is rather simple, all you gotta do is string combos together going high and low until you nail a juggle.

Dead Or Alive 5 is the other way around. Pulling Off combos and special attacks is so god damn easy. cool thing about the Boob Simulator is its Rock Paper Scissors Metagame, thats where its important, Combos can be interupted and countered, even combo throws can be evaded, all that can be done by every single character in the game with reltive ease. meaning your no longer fighting with the controls... You're now fighting with your opponent. It also makes you think twice about how you attack (Unlike in Steet Fighter, you can throw hadokens from a safe distance with no risk whatsover, and its not just Hadokens, theres just a few Characters that attack with unnaturally long Invincible frames or unaturally short vulnerable animated frames meaning even if by some miracle you manage to avoid getting hit I can't counter attack properly.

In Tekken, Street Fighter and Virtua Fighter its so frustrating when the only thing standing in between you and victory is not the Opponent but the damn Control Complexity. How the hell Am I supposed press Y and A and the Shoulder button simultaneously while rotaing the left stick 360 degress twice in less then 5 frames (at 60 fps, so thats like 0.21 seconds ? I'm not Superman) using only my thumbs, just for a move that does 5% Damage.

I don't get into fighting games to Fight with the controls. And I'l bet dollars to ding dongs you didn't either. You wana fight opponents.

Perhaps the reason the genre is unpopular is because of this level inaccessability over layers and layers of Complexity that ramps up Frustration yet offers very little depth. Thats right. I said little depth ! Come and Get Me ! :p.

Okay let me be serious. Maybe they do have depth.... But nobody's gona have a chance to experience if its behind control scheme designed for Savants that can count the number frames of each move for each character in every fighting game. Thats just not for me.

So yeah.... Boob Simulator 5 FTW ! Everything Else gets a WTF ! LOL see what I did there. :p

I don't see how you can make animation look better, btw its BBlue not BBlaze. I really don't mind the complex controls of fighters in the same way that physical sports demand that you train your body as well. Nobody whines while playing Tennis when they start that they can't hit the ball where they want it to go (they probably do). How good you are depends on how much you practice and also why people fill stadiums to watch sports games, to see the best of the best.

@ Zidaneski

Theres also the issue of Equipment. fighting Games just weren't designed for standard controllers, especially in the case of Tekken which was an arcade game 1st and was then Ported over to consoles without factoring that consoles don't have coin slots so theres no need to to stick to making the game impossible so that people die more so that they toss in more coins to keep playing.

Street Fighter isn't a Coin-op Port but it definately still has coin-op developer mentality in its design (Alot of Capcom's games just aren't up with the times, Dante Can't Gab Ledgdes despite how much platforming there is in DMC, President Evil only finaly included an Active-non-contextual cover system in President Evil 6, not to mention things like Multiplayer and Checkpoints and blablabla).

Injustice's Controls are alot more Accessable but damn Its unbalanced as hell. All thanks to the Stage Hazards. They are biased towar....... Let me just Stop right here and Say that in simple terms Fighting games still aren't user friendly yet. Because I can go on and on forever about whats wrong with Street Fighter and Tekken and Ninja Realm.

Other games aren't doing hat at all, other games release for full price and later down the road have DLC and balance patches, which is to be expected for fighting games these days. You're also not looking at what KI has done right that should be incorporated into fighting games and that's a comprehensive tutorial, in-game data, and the best online netcode for a fighting game yet.

Well then You just aren't playing the right games.

Street Fighter, Tekken, Dead Or Alive, Naruto, Injustice, Mortal Kombat, and SF x Tekken all have the things you mentioned. As for the Netcode specicfically... These things are never perfect. Not even in KI.

I wonder what it is you see in that game ? Is this because its the 1st 8th Gen fighting game ?

Is this because you bought it ? Is it your only game ? Or are you just yanking my chain ? :p you're yanking my chain arent you ?

I don't see the genre going very far. It was perfected about a decade ago in arcades and hasn't really evolved since, just been refined.

The only thing that could truly evolve the genre further is Oculus Rift and brain-signal inputs.

If I was yanking your chain I would make it more obvious.

No, these other games don't have a tutorial that's as good and in-depth as KI's that also teaches general fighting game fundamentals, nor do they all have the amazing in-game data such as frame data, and KI by far has the best netcode of any fighting game.

I see it for being a very well made fighting game given that it only had about less then a year of development. And no, I have 4 other games for my Xbone besides KI Classic.

I'm actually interested in the next tekken installment. But it doesn't need 500 characters.. it needs balanced characters that take advantage of environments & counters for all fighting styles. I like the DOA approach but it shouldn't be "easy" to pull off counters. They should be incorporated into certain move sets. This will allow for more complex matches and less "twitch" matches.

Comprehensive Tutorials with Gamedata right

Tekken Tag 2 has the Fight Lab.

Street Fighter has one hidden away Some where. I think the called it Challenge Mode, doesn't show frames though.

I never Checked for SF x T so....

Dead Or Alive has 2, theres the regular training mode which makes you perfom a characers Entire Movelist on a dummy. And the Campaigning mode is the other tutorial and covers everything not in the Training mode. Plus its also got training wheels, you can view the move list without pausing the game. That way you don't even need to remember combos or train characters at all..

injustice and Mortal Kombat didn't have frame data from what I could tell. But damn its Tutorial is so comprehensive that it borders on Hand Holding.

As for Virtue Fighter, I doubt it. And Naruto is si simple it doesn't need a tutorial. Its so simple they probabably shouldn't have even made it. But its Netcode is definately good.
