Wasn't really expecting a massive jump in fidelity anyways.
This. Anyone thought otherwise is in for a big disappointment. I totally expected less fidelity.
I am convinced most gamers and posters on this site are an insufferable bunch. We got plenty of new games from many genres and the physical console reveal, what do people want?
We say this at the start of every generation. I urge you to go back to the end of the PS360 days and look at posts talking about the launch titles for PS4 and Xbox One. None of the trailers really made your jaw drop. They looked like an improvement and much cleaner for sure, but you can tell the developers were still new to these machines. Also goes to show that it's not simple beefy hardware (although that always helps) and simply pressing a button to make gorgeous character models and worlds, but the need for talented devs and more experience with the tools. You can bet in 2024-2025 there will be games that look completely CG and take our breaths away and make us go "Not possible! How are they doing this?"
ACTUALLY...
Killzone Shadow Fall and Infamous Second Son don't look any worse than the end of cycle games out now, both those games could come out today and still be called AAA graphics... Infact looking at the footage of those 2 games just now comparing to the PS5 footage, not much of difference.
Yeah everything looked like it could easily be played on PS4. What made it worse was the dude who boasted this would be the greatest gen leap.
Don't expect tintin levels of quality until next gen probably. Even then, that's still a bit farfetched considering devs are after resolution.
After watching the PS5 event everything looked pretty much current gen including HZD2 but with little touches of ray tracing I thought this was supposed to be a massive jump? I'm just not seeing it.
I haven't seen anything currently that comes close to that HZD 2 trailer.

Really man? RDR2 looks just as good.
To be honest I think this can easily be done on PS5 but let's not kid ourselves. A lot of stuff they showed wasn't gameplay. HZD2 can probably look like the trailer anyway. It just that what was shown wasn't gameplay.
@dagubot: Yeah, I'm excited to see what this tech can do. Almost every developer's been talking about it in some capacity.
And did they mention Horizon would be a launch title? It didn't look like they gave it a date, but it also looked very complete.

That's mainly because what was shown could be done on the PS4 Pro.
The problem with some of the footage its not from final code, like the footage above... Meaning, they can cut half the shadow resolution or lighting quality or character models and so on before the game goes gold.
You can't asses graphics until its playable and there in your hands, till then even "game play" trailers like the footage states is "subject to change".
Nothing shown is out of this world graphically and nothing shown has next generation ray tracing to the level seen on PC already with games like Control.
The footage of Horizon game looks no different to the trailers for the first game aside from a different settings visually doesn't look a generation ahead, in fact it looks like a leap a sequel would have on the same generation.
That Unreal Engine 5 tech demo that ran at 1440/30FPS with Fake Ray Tracing was visually better than anything shown here... Which is why you can't take tech demo's seriously but its a clear indication that you shouldn't expect much if it took going down to 1440 and 30FPS to get a game to look like that.
Also all the footage on their channel is 4K/30FPS except one game Godfall.
The PS5 is a 36 CU GPU lets not be console gamers here jub, that's not a high end piece of silicon. This is as good as it's going to get, the same way Infamous Second Son was shown off at PS4 reveal graphics didn't get drastically better than that in 5 years.
We have hit a ceiling for graphics... The only drastic step forward is Ray Tracing and these console don't have the power to do proper next level ray tracing without dropping to 1080p.
If the games shown had full on ray tracing global illumination and shadows they would look a generation ahead... The reason they don't is because they can't do it properly at modern resolutions, hell not even my 2080 Ti can.

You came up with all this based off a 1080p compressed stream?
Those underwater scenes in HZD 2 looked gorgeous, but I would like to see some actual in game footage and not the staged stuff. Resi 8 will look great too and representative of the final product I believe, RE engine is good shit. Will be great for PSVR hopefully cos Resi 7 in VR was top tier Resident Evil. Project Athia was a looker too and the particle effects and busyness of Ratchet was cool too.
Majority of stuff shown throughout the reveal is not that different from current gen.

Are you unaware that the footage is all available at 4K with a higher bitrate now on Youtube?...
https://www.youtube.com/user/PlayStation/videos
@Grey_Eyed_Elf: Oh I haven't seen the 4k footage I'm going to check it out. But you weren't impressed with anything? I thought the new Horizon looked outstanding. If you don't think it's a major improvement look at the water from the first game. I also thought Ratchet and Clank was really impressive. The seamless transition from one dimension to the next was devs actually utilizing the IO/SSD speed and I thought the game looked like a Pixar film. Ohh and Demon Souls looks bad ass.
It looked like a PS4 Pro with better loading times. I mean what did you guys expect. An RTX2080 will cost more than 2x of the PS5 when it's released. That tells you all you need to know. All this is doing is bringing consoles up to 80% of what PC gamers can experience today. I'm waiting for the RTX3080, true next gen
And the best looking game in the whole presentation had "gameplay" with the the following caption on the bottom of it:

The next gen consoles better get something like DLSS down the road or otherwise PC graphics will leave it in the dust. DLSS is a serious game changer for ray tracing and PC graphics in general. The extra GPU power saved from near identical or even better AI rendered resolution is ridiculous. People are starting to see large scale applications of ray tracing as something more attainable even on an RTX 2060. Speaking of which the RTX 2060 will probably get some extra life added to its span and not have it lag too far behind the PS5 and XsX because of DLSS and not having to prioritize 4k resolution.
The level of implementation in some of these PS5 games like Ratchet & Clank appears to be very small scale applications. Nvidia RTX titles like Control, Battlefield V, Metro Exodus and Shadow Of The Tomb Raider gave me a more impressive wow than the games shown at PS5 event. Heck even games without ray tracing like RDR2, The Division 2, Gears 5 and Ghost Recon Breakpoint could go toe to toe with games shown at the PS5 event.
I agree, wasn’t blown away by the graphics. But remember the show was 1080/30. Think the trailers will be posted in 4k.
Even then, horrible compression
The games will look way better when you actually play them.
No sense judging graphics based off streaming some trailers.

Looks next gen to me, and so does Ratchet & Clank
I am convinced most gamers and posters on this site are an insufferable bunch. We got plenty of new games from many genres and the physical console reveal, what do people want?
Yeah, a lot of gamers are like that unfortunately. Recently I saw a thread on the Games subreddit of a new indie game trailer that looked really great, and the first post was moaning about the lip-syncing not being that great during dialogue. It's annoying when people who have probably never created anything of value in their life are over-critical of other people's work.

New horizon was a trailer with no gameplay that look graphically no different from the trailers of the first game.
Its not that the games aren't impressive its the fact that none of the hype was met... Cerny talked about the NVME like it was going to give us games we couldn't fathom yet all we have is current generation looking games.
Its not all that exciting its just fanboys who have goggles on that make excuses, and where are the 8K or 120Hz games?... There are two 4K/60FPS trailers out of the 20 games shown.
Just look at the following:
Aside from the new setting the trailer shows little to no indication of a drastic change in graphical fidelity at least not to the point where you would consider it a generational leap.
Looks next gen to me, and so does Ratchet & Clank
You can tell which of those are cutscene screen crabs and in engine screen grabs just look at the AA levels.
This image looks like its in-game:
Literally looks like the same game on the same engine with maybe some settings a little higher and different environment. Its not even close to a generational leap.
Next gen?...
Okay.
A question for you guys: were you blown away with the PS4 launch titles' graphics?
Probably not. I mean, it's almost always like that with the launch of the new gaming system.
It will take years until we get Unreal Engine 5 presentation graphics in games.

No, put your excuses and sjw armour down.
Gamer's are consumers and when a new console is announced with games looking like they could run on the old consoles people tend to wonder why the f*** they are forced to get a new console that will cost more for it.
I for one think the graphics full stop look incredible this generation BUT lets not kid our selves these games don't look even close to a generational leap.
The era of games looking better over time is over, these are X86 platforms... The games we see know are 90% of what the console is capable of... Same as PS4 launch games vs now, just look at Infamous Second Son vs Spiderman its not a drastic difference.
So them hyping a NVME like its going to give us games we couldn't even comprehend then showing games that look like games we already have its easy to forgive the gamers who can't afford a new console when they get angry at the situation.

Lol dude, that killzone game looking amazing also unity was a dam good looker far out of the PS3 realm. Nothing they showcased at the event looks like something that can't be done currently already.

Eh, not sure about Killzone. Imho, it looked average. Unity looked pretty good, yes.

Why didn't they, then?

Again someone talking out their a**.
The only reason the old consoles had graphics drastically better at the end of the generation vs launch was because they were custom architecture that took developers years to understand and make use off... i.e. The cell, the PS4 and PS5 are both X86 its why developers have been saying so easy to developer for meaning they can push the console to 100% from the get go.
PS4 reveal:

Why didn't they, then?
Honestly and that other game infamous clearly was a jump forwards in visuals from the Ps3.
The PS4 was also maxed out day one performance wise really, it was even to weak to push witcher 3 and unity to stable performance and had to drop resolutions. The same will happen with the PS5, thing is nothing but a mid gen pc at best when it launches.

I agree them telling us how revolutionary their new console is going to be every gen and how it will change the way we play games is mostly BS. Games will play the same, they'll just look nicer, and load quicker.
How do you define a "generational leap"? We're at the point of diminishing returns. Games are going to continue to get better looking, but for a game to look drastically improved over the best we have now would require an enormous increase in graphical power that isn't possible in a console. It's inevitable that graphical improvements between console generations is going to become increasingly subtle compared to 20 years ago. It's unreasonable to expect otherwise.
Honestly I was really impressed.
I wouldn't say I'm impress what I seen so far, I'm just used to the graphics we have now and as long as the games themselves are fun, I'm fine staying where were at. I wasn't really expecting a huge jump in the graphics department from the get-go.
Then again, I'm just a PC gamer, so I'm fine what I seen from PS5 and even I can say, I'm slightly cool where its heading :)
Looks next gen to me, and so does Ratchet & Clank

Cool, you own an LG OLED TV.
I'm waiting for mine to arrive, they said sometime in June ... :P
Can't wait to play PC, PS4 and PS5 games on it in HDR.

We have the graphical resources to create next generation looking games... Ray Tracing and the tech demo for PS5 with unreal engine showed us that.
The trouble is that its just not possible on the coming consoles due to the lack of power unless you drop resolution to 1080p.
The developers clearly are sacrificing true next generation graphical features for resolution.
Its possible, the developers just refuse to do it because showing a game on a PS5 running at 1080p is a bad thing.
Its why companies are come up with techniques to mask resolution.
A generational leap is possible... You just can't have it both ways when it comes to resolution.
Just look at GTA5 on PS5?... Enhanced edition?...
PC modders have modded the game to look better and run at 1440/30FPS on a Vega 56... Weaker than a PS5. Its just these developers chose to chase resolution.
