I'm surprised that the N64 expansion pack didn't begin to really come up until just now. The problems with that was that the actual expansion and its support and implementation into titles were fairly weak. Most games that used it required you to have it and it didn't make a big difference IMO. It also came in just as the Dreamcast was being released, so the difference appeared unimportant.
For the next generation, however, MS,Sony, and Nintendo will need systems to be less costly to produce and sell at launch and for them to last 10+ years. Having a simple expansion port that could be used after 4-6 years into the console's lifecycle could give them much needed. They could be simple devices that would have a designated slot into the console and they could have additional CPU cores, RAM, etc. Provided that the 3 don't produce too many different models, weaken the initial console with this in mind,or con-volute the process, it could be an excellent way of increasing revenues and interests in the console, create solid competition between the hardware manufacturers, and make our games better, which is all that really matters.
