Microsoft and Sony are missing the point. I buy a console so I get a different experience than the one I get on my computer. Not so I can have two "computers", one of which is seriously gimped compared to my computer. All I need (and all I think everyone should need) is a console with community/online features. Not all this Facebook, Twitter, Last.fm, browser, and media upload crap.

why dont people jsut buy a PC then?? LOL.Sniping_Crowbar

The #1 reason people for the most part dont associate game with PC NOR want to mess with PC is because once again...they either grew up playing consoles...OR...here we go....IT IS NOT SIMPLE PLUG N PLAY for the 1billionth time..

If I went out and bought a game for my PC it wouldnt even install. Same for my wifes pc, my kids pc and my kids laptop...PC gaming is for those people that want to s^&*w around with settings and parts and mods ect more so then just game. I know...I have been there back in the day somewhat.

COnsoles having some replaceable parts would be fine. Disc drive goes out...just replace it with a standard drive..GPU/CPU go out..same thing..

Replaceable? Maybe. (May be tricky though because most console use low-profile designs that make parts tricky to reach--but they're also why they're considerably smaller than Desktop/Mid-Tower PC cases). Upgradable? Too confusing for all but mass storage, and there's also the possibility of exploiting replacement parts (you know, hacking firmwares and programs into the system).

The idea for upgrades isn't that stupid, seeing how many people are rushing to "upgrade" to 360 slim, I have no doubt there would be a market for an accessory that would make games run in 1080p / better AA / smoother framerate. But if MS charges 100 bucks for an undersized HDD, what do you think they'd charge for a GPU upgrade?

Anyway, I think consoles should focus on the games and cut the excess fat to keep the costs down. The one thing that makes PC great, and worth it, is that it's open, that won't happen on a console.

Failing that, you could just buy a decent PC...

Hell no, the Wii is my favourite current gen console at the moment because it's the least like a PC. Consoles excel their own domain and the further they slip away from that the more I'm disappointed with them.

I'm surprised that the N64 expansion pack didn't begin to really come up until just now. The problems with that was that the actual expansion and its support and implementation into titles were fairly weak. Most games that used it required you to have it and it didn't make a big difference IMO. It also came in just as the Dreamcast was being released, so the difference appeared unimportant.

For the next generation, however, MS,Sony, and Nintendo will need systems to be less costly to produce and sell at launch and for them to last 10+ years. Having a simple expansion port that could be used after 4-6 years into the console's lifecycle could give them much needed. They could be simple devices that would have a designated slot into the console and they could have additional CPU cores, RAM, etc. Provided that the 3 don't produce too many different models, weaken the initial console with this in mind,or con-volute the process, it could be an excellent way of increasing revenues and interests in the console, create solid competition between the hardware manufacturers, and make our games better, which is all that really matters.

The 360 slim doesn't divide the platform. Games look the same as on a release 360. Once you allow gpu and cpu upgrades you provide an inconsistent market for developers to target. And a lot of us like consoles because you can buy one and know that for the life of the console all games will work with it.

PC gaming isn't just for people who love to upgrade. A well built or bought PC could last you upwards of a few years for gaimng purposes. Also, plug and play has become something that is becoming much more attainable on PC's, such as automatic driver downloads (on things such as 360 PC controllers etc.).

But people are buying laptops these days which is going to be a problem for pc gaming. Just look at the new Star Wars MMO, it's obviously scaled down for igpus. It won't be long before it is rare to see a desktop in a store like Best Buy.

I'm really curious to see how the next-gen consoles from all three companies turn out. While it's mere speculation on my part, graphics, as it seems, are improving less and less with each new generation of consoles. No one can deny that the jump from the psone and n64 to the ps2 and gamecube was a much more drastic change in terms of graphics than the ps2 and xbox was to the ps3 and 360.

Granted, graphics will obviously improve when each game company decides to jump into the next-gen, but the lifetime of these modern consoles seem to extend with each generation as well, further leading me to believe that the next generation of consoles will focus more on gameplay innovations and the tiny details in games that people take for granted. Let's just hope these gameplay innovations either utilize motion controls or 3D in non-gimmicky ways, or simply scrap both concepts entirely.
