Hopefully 720 will have blu-ray like the PS4..
No one can complain about multi-discs and storage and playing movies anymore.
Wii:U cant even play Blu-Ray and DVD.

Well they can't relese device with blu-ray drive without licence, they also need decryption keys for movie DRM that comes with it

I think the rumor hints at some truth but is off the mark by quite a bit. This is an interesting rumor, to a degree, because I hear MS doesn't have DVD and Blu-ray functionality built into the Windows 8 OS, the licensing cost would be $2 for the rights of the DVD and Blu-ray codecs each unit (LINK). If the next Xbox is indeed using some modified version of Windows 8 then maybe it's not out of the realm of possibility that it's not licensed for video playback. Though this being such a small codec issue I can't imagine this will delay them beyond releasing this year. As far as production of disc drives goes I imagine MS is buying the hardware from manufacturers just like they did for the Xbox 360, from numerous tech companies. I imagine those companies pay the licensing rights for production of those disc drives since they're used in more devices than just consoles, and sometimes sold as stand alone drives for PCs on the open market. If anything I don't think this is a hardware rights issue, probably a codec issue, and the cost to license the codec for Blu-ray isn't going to be causing any huge problems on the console.

Whoe ver started this rumor is an idiot, and I question the intellegence of the people who believe it. Sony does not own Blu-Ray, it's not the BetaMax of the HD optical disc industry. You cannot patent "Blu-Ray Drive in a console".

That's very unlikely, since Blu-Ray drive can be license from various companies that make Blu-Ray players. It doesn't have to be license through Sony at all. Sony can't bloke licensing rights of other companies making Blu-Ray drives. So this is obviously bogus. Good try though.

My only gripe with that rumor is that in SLI or Crossfire configurations, dual GPUs really only net up to +60% performance gains over single GPU solutions in graphics. It would be more cost beneficial to ramp up the generation of logic in mass production scale than it would be to print die-space for two separate GPUs.

Just as clueless as the TC I see. Sony isn't the only company who makes Blu-Ray players and they aren't the only company that owns Blu-Ray. This thread fails miserably. See a lot of people on here no nothing about the history of Blu-Ray.

Dude... May 21st can't come soon enough. I'm not saying that as a troll, either. This uncertainty is wearing everyone thin. Between you, me and the rest of the planet Earth? I think the best thing would be for the 720 to be a gamer-centric awesome piece of machine and MS announcing some cool games. Xbox and Playstation should torch the earth of all this casualized softcore friendly noobish junk and leave it without a health pack or a regen. That's my God's honest take on the whole thing.

LOL why would they crawl to Sony. Sony are just one of many companies behind blu ray. Even if Sony didn't want the Xbox to use it, the others would overrule it. Sonys influence = nothing lol

forgive me If I'm wrong but isn't the VC1 codec incorporated within blu ray tech? and I believe MS is behind VC1 so yeah......
