I don't think so. There are several conpeting opinions in there.
*My weak trolling attempt aside*, someone give me a good arguement to present my wife for replacing my daughter's DS (which her mother lost) with a 3DS instead of a DSi. All the standards have fallen flat. Apparently "because it would be so cool" isn't good enough.
*Edit 2: "Because I want the red one and she can take my black one" didn't work either

*My weak trolling aside* It's all personal consumer taste in the market. I guess the best argument you could give your wife is that the DS is just outdated. I'm happy with my DSi, but that doesn't change the fact that soon support for the DS will probably be dropped and if your daughter has certain series she follows like Pokemon, Nintendogs, etc., she won't be able to get future titles in those series. Also, you could tell her about some of the features that the 3DS has built in, like Netflix. Honestly, my expertise in this area wouldn't be ideal as I'm only 19. I'm perfectly content with living in the past of gaming, but sometimes we just have to move forward.
Also, you could find a way to hold this over her head and possibly guilt her into buying one. It works with me sometimes.

the original Nintendo DS has now officially crossed 150 million units sold worldwide, becoming the highest selling system of all time.

Isn't the PS2 at 154 million?
153.19 Million as of September 30th 2011. I noticed that as well. I don't think its been beaten yet.I'm generally surprised Nintendo is so close to meeting their forecast of 16 Million 3DS' sold during the first year, they didn't adjust that number after the price drop. Wow.
Edit: Nevermind, they lowered it to 14 million.

I think you have mixed things up. That forecast is for this fiscal year. Their FY ends march 31st, which means the 3.6m 3DS units sold near launch do not count towards this forecast.
So, from the start of this FY and up until Dec 31st, Nintendo sold 11.4m 3DS' so they still have more to sell up until FY end to meet the 14m forecast.

153.19 Million as of September 30th 2011. I noticed that as well. I don't think its been beaten yet. We're still waiting for Sony's financial report, but the PS2 has so far always sold at least 2.1 million in the October-December financial quarter (http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps2_sale_e.html). The DS actually sold less than the PS2 the July-September 2011 quarter, so if it holds steady at 2.1 again, the gap would actually increase between the DS and the PS2 rather than the DS catching up.So the DS has officially become the most popular games machine of all time. The PS2 was quite unreliable, I'm sure alot of the units bought were replacements for faulty ones
Good for Nintendo and the DS deserves to be the best sellin console/handheld of all time still love to play DS Lite and XL.
True. But because it was Sony they got a pass. The Xbox was more reliable but because of the 360 they have a track record. So the DS has officially become the most popular games machine of all time. The PS2 was quite unreliable, I'm sure alot of the units bought were replacements for faulty ones

Answer this honestly. How many DS version did you buy over the years. I've bought 5 myself.
It's not like the DS did not have it's problems either like the infamous awful L-button.
It really sounds like you have no friends outside of the internet...the generation after mine are into dorky **** and settle for dorky ****.

I don't get the point of sales threads. I mean it's interesting I guess but it really does nothing for system wars.

Nintendo fans doesn't really have much else to brag about. Especially if they are Wii only gamers.
There's The Last Story and Pandoras Tower which both look promising but that's it.
I'm hoping that because of the 3DS turnaround, Nintendo increased power in the WiiU. It really looks like Nintendo will be on top next gen on all fronts.
[QUOTE="PillyChickle"]True. But because it was Sony they got a pass. The Xbox was more reliable but because of the 360 they have a track record. Not really I replaced plenty of the original xbox's why I left ms then I didn't stick around for the 360 disaster tell I got a free slim one in a contest. Not that any system is perfect but I've haven't had anywhere near as many issues with psp.So the DS has officially become the most popular games machine of all time. The PS2 was quite unreliable, I'm sure alot of the units bought were replacements for faulty ones

Probably. But then it says something about the DS itself.
Now we can officialy say Vita is DOOMED!! Yeah... :) How do they plan to get 15 million? It would take a miracle, plus is it even sold 1 million yet? :/yoshi_64Same way all system sales pick up sales more games and lowering the price over time. VIta sold 4XX,000 first day I'm sure they are close to a million by now if not launching everywhere will help pick up sales.
Nintendo just released its latest quarterly earnings statement, and dear God is it a brighter picture than their last two financial statements.
The 3DS has made an amazing recovery, having sold 8.36 million units from October to December 2011, bringing its worldwide total up to 15.03 million in ten months.
On the other hand, the original Nintendo DS has now officially crossed 150 million units sold worldwide, becoming the highest selling system of all time.
The Wii was the slowest of the three, its total up to 94 million units sold.
The complete results can be found here.
Absolute Nintendomination again?
charizard1605
WTF are you talking about?????????? Do you even know what a financial statement is?
They just posted a major loss and their share price just dropped by close to 7% today.
And for the record, they also cut their forecast for both 3DS and Wii sales.
Yeah, it was a great earnings release for Nintendo today.......NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually going by the sales numbers, the system has only sold perhaps over 500k since it launched. It hasn't reached 1 million units yet, and that's pathetic. The first PSP sold 1 million it's first week I believe.

According to Nintendo because of the 3DS price cut, Wii price cuts in overseas markets, inventory writedowns, and the Yen.
Also, why does foreign currency exchange matter? I hear this excuse all the time from apologists for poor Japanese financial performance. The Yen is strong. So what, the Yen has been strong for many years. If you can't compete you go out of business. It is not like the Yen is going to suddenly change next quarter.
The proof is in the investment market....which just tanked Nintendo by 7% today after already tanking hard over the last year. Today's report was miserable. Period. No excuses.

It took a long while for the 3DS and PSP to reach a million units. However that means nothing when you compare their numbers to how the Vita's been doing in its first six weeks. Keep in mind that there were supply issues for the PSP early on.

when a currency(right now the yen) is gaining so much power as it is now the money they get back in return is radically different then they would have if it was weaker.
we all expected them to take a hit they are loss leading on the 3ds and etc but the hit wasnt as bad as i thought, this is the whole fiscal year remind you so they bounced back alot the holiday season.

Bejesus. I know what the effect of foreign exchange is. It isn't an excuse when it is predicted.
Furthermore, the net effect of foreign exchange this year versus last year is less, not worse. Again, my point is that the effect of foreign exchange is not a viable excuse for craptacular performance. And that excuse doesn't save your company from failing.
Also, they did not bounce back this holiday season. Three months ago they were forecasting a full year loss of 20B Yen. Now they are forecasting a full year loss of 65B Yen. That is hardly a bounce back.
