If your a gamer at heart, you'll have big respect for the big N. These so called "gamers" claim Nintendo is ruining gaming. Just because Nintendo doesn't make shooters 90% of the time, or you can't post your score on a pointless online scoreboard, or the fact that Nintendo appeals to non-gamers, does not mean Nintendo is ruining gaming.

The fact that Nintendo is appealing to non-gamers who want a gaming system, like the Wii, is a first for the gaming industry. Not only that, but something truly amazed me. My Mother was not into games at all, most Mothers aren't, but something astonishing happened that I thought would never happen for a million years. My mom wanted a Wii Fit so bad, she called EB games everyday to see if they had one. I would never have thought that someone like my mom would ever call a game store for something that she wanted.

Also at work, I have a boss who is female and today at lunch, right in front of me, she was calling EB games to see if they had a Wii Fit. Apparently she wanted to get one for a while, but could never find it. EB games was busy, so she called about 9 times until she got through, only to get the message that they did get a bunch of Wii Fit's the day before, but sold out in 2 hours. She was not happy.

My point is, Nintendo has gotten people who never even touched a videogame before, really interested in videogames. This is a huge plus for gaming. Not only are more people interested, but they really, really want the game they are looking for.

If you've been gaming for most of your life, since the Atari age, you know that what Nintendo has accomplished is something that Sony or MS could only dream of.

Oh, and for you so called "hardcore" gamers, a real hardcore game is when you physically feel pain after playing it, and I'm not talking about your best buddy punching you in the face for team killing him.

What they've done for the industry is completely fantastic. But I can't help but feel a little left in the dust, regarding my Wii, for the time being atleast. If the Wii starts getting the shear amount of quality and quantity that the DS has, then I'll be happy.

SONY has ben doing this for generations. :? The fact that they have the highest selling console of all time is more than enough evidence that they roped in a lot of new gamers. And my mom doesnt like gaming eaither, but she'll jump on some Crash Bandicoot if you put it in front of her. ;)

Good on Nintendo for finding a new market But here's my main problem with them: Think about how much content a Metal Gear Solid game could have on the PS2 Then think about the amount of content a Metal Gear Solid game could have on a PS3 Big difference Then think about the amount of content a Zelda game could have on a Gamecube And the amount of content it could have on a Wii Small difference

My problem with Nintendo is not with Nintendo at all, it is with all these old pharts who think they are "gamers" because they played Wii Fit. It has a few minigames on, whoopdy freaking doo! I demand more from my games. Wii Sports is a fun game... for about an hour, then the serious lack of depth kinda wears thin. Ok, here is my qualm with Nintendo, and yet again, it isn't really Nintendo's fault: most of the games aren't all that great. A lot of games are shovelware or worse. Yea, there are some gems, but they are few and far between. If most of these publishers gave a crap, maybe it wouldn't be such a wasteland. I find it really sad to see more crappy licensed games for the Wii compared to the handhelds. Nintendo, put these publishers in place and you will get a customer in me.

Also, when these old pharts and little kids decide they are bored with Wii Play, Wii Fit, Wii Music (which isn't a freaking game), etc., what will they play? They will want a game that has depth to really see what all the hub-bub is about. They will pick up a xbox 360 or PS3 and play it, seeing what they have been missing. I got a funny feeling that this is going to be a gateway drug style console. Its kind of a one time thing if you ask me. Just a little look into the future.

She didnt have to. She bought it for me, saw me playing it, and wanted in. And what does it matter if she had to call EB games everyday? She probably had to because if they werent so scarce your mom would have called once, then drove in to get it. Hell, she may have been able to just pick one up at the mall, or on her way back from work. And I wonder, is wii fit even a game?

Hopefully it will. In the meantime, though, don't blame the dearth of games on Nintendo. There are tons of possibilities for gameplay innovation on the Wii, but the publishers like HD shooters better than innovation, so tough luck.

Yes Wii Fit is a game. You can do so much more than just exercise, if you really call that exercise.

The more casuals Nintendo pulls in means more hardcores left out in the cold. Why? Casuals, at least the ones Nintendo appeals to, are people willing to drop $90 on a balance board in hopes to shed a few pounds. They aren't the people to demand or even acknowledge the continuity of previous or new IPs. They don't care or have any knowledge of gaming in its current state..if devs start using Nintendo as an example you might as well say goodbye to the games you love now and welcome to the waves of shovelware and overpriced gimmicks that would be sure to follow...

I applaud you TC

You are right, but unfortunatly this is SW, meaning that posters who actually put some thought before typing are vastly outnumbered by waves of trolls and ignorants that mash their heads in their keyboards in some childish attempt to win a "my toy is better then yours" contest with headache inducing posts.

Trying to be reasonable here can be downright frustrating when most rather hang out in the "Grafix King" threads

I agree with this. Yeah there are a lot of people who dont normally play games buying wii, but what do they think of it? Not the wii, but gaming itself? Does wii color their perception that all games are like wii fit, wii play, Raving Rabbits, wii music. Sure they may be fun but do they think that all games are that shallow? Or would we rather they experience the likes of Bioshock, God of War, a good Final Fantasy? Its making nintendo an assload of money, but it may be setting people off on the wrong foot.

stop acting as if the group known as "casuals" is something new. They are the biggest demographic gaming has. you really think the hardcore alone kept it afloat all these years? Games like kareroke revolution, the eyetoy, the power glove, all gimmicks used to attract people. did it end gaming? did it end the games you play on the 360 and ps3? did it stop devs from producing more quality titles on 360 and ps3 rather than wii?

It will gradually become more difficult for developers to ignore the Wii as the number of owners increases. It has yet to really take off. I'm confident the games will come. I'm patient and I've got a 360 so all is well.

Nintendo died for me around the middle of the gamecube's life span. Any gamer will agree that the N64 and PS were one of the best consoles. There was sooooooo much variety and not just dull run 'n' gun shooters. I really miss those days, I hope Nintendo especially and devs these days realize that there is much more you can do with a game besides running and gunning. N64, I miss you:cry:

At first I also thought that the Wii woud overall help gaming. Like get the non-gamers involved, like your mother and then maybe lead them to more advanced games on consoles. My games. But in 2 years now it hasnt. It only has made Sony and MS think about making stuff that Nintendo is pushing out. Which is the exact ********** opposite! Now how the heck am I supposed to respond? Oh yeah, the same way... "In the next two years maybe these non-gamers buy more systems other than the wii"-dreaming.

No, its not. Its picking a game he knows a begginer will have trouble enjoying to prove a point.

And if i recall, Wii Sports is also a Nintendo GAME.

Because those are probably easy to get into for your average non gamer. I wouldn't call appealing to non gamers with mini compilations impossible. It would be more impressive if she played a real game with a bit more depth to it... Metroid probably isnt the best example.

I believe the usual idea behind these sayings is that when someone gets into gaming then they will become a hardcore gamer. Isn't that what most Nintendo fanboys say about the new audience that Nintendo is marketing to?

[QUOTE="Dahaka-UK"] It would be more impressive if she played a real game with a bit more depth to it...

Dude making "mothers" even slightly interested in videogames is already impressive. The fact that videogames are slowly detaching themselves from the old "nerd in the basement" stigma in the eyes of the adult masses is already huge. [QUOTE="Dahaka-UK"] Metroid probably isnt the best example.

Yeah it really isnt.

[QUOTE="TheGrat1"]

Question: Did your mom call EB games (or which ever store back then) everyday to get Crash Bandicoot? That's my point. I was totally shocked when my mom called EB games everyday to get try and get a Wii fit.

TheGrat1

She didnt have to. She bought it for me, saw me playing it, and wanted in. And what does it matter if she had to call EB games everyday? She probably had to because if they werent so scarce your mom would have called once, then drove in to get it. Hell, she may have been able to just pick one up at the mall, or on her way back from work. And I wonder, is wii fit even a game?

Yes Wii Fit is a game. You can do so much more than just exercise, if you really call that exercise.

And you think all 140million + people who bought/own ps2's bought those for the 'hardcore'? Or how many of them bought it because it was a DVD player?

[QUOTE="Grinning_Demon"][QUOTE="Ragnarok1051"] He proved his point, and you're just picking Wii Sports to prove yours. Why are you different?Ragnarok1051
*sigh* Using Metroid Prime to prove that mothers are not interested in gaming while ignoring the appeal Wii Sports (a game) has on that demographic is fair? Ok then >___>

I believe the usual idea behind these sayings is that when someone gets into gaming then they will become a hardcore gamer. Isn't that what most Nintendo fanboys say about the new audience that Nintendo is marketing to?

Yes. And that is definitely FALSE.

The moms who buy wii fit probably just want wii fit and will not get into gaming. However, countless kids/teenagers/young adults who never owned a system before will start playing games, and start buying good games. After buying a wii, my girlfriend loves playing mario kart and super paper mario. She is just starting to get into super mario galaxy. I have another friend who is not a gamer by any means. After buying a wii, she plays twilight princess.

You guys need to give people more credit. You act like casual gamers are ridiculously stupid and will buy anything thrown in their faces. Most casual gamers are smart enough to look into a new game at least a little before spending 40-50 bucks on it. Most casual gamers are able to look up reviews and videos and such before aking a 40-50 dollar purchase. Most first time gamers with wii's that I know end up buying some casual games like guitar hero, rockband, wii fit, etc., but also end up buying games like paper mario, mario galaxy, mario kart, and twilight princess. A lot of kid/teen/young adult non gamers have heard of mario, zelda, halo, GTA, etc. If I'm not mistaken, most of the shovelware on wii does not sell particularly well. Wii fit does well because a lot of moms/girlfriends buy it, and a lot of other people want to get it for the balance board. Wii play does well because it comes with a remote. Wii sports comes with the console, so every wii owner has it. If you look at the sales of wii games that don't come with a console/accessory, you won't see a lot of the wii's shovelware (with the exception of wii music, but I'm not calling it shovelware because I've never played it).

1- Hardcore gamer is a myth specialy what people call HC gamers now.

2- You cant compare a kid to an adult. Kids learn new interfaces alot faster then adults, and have alot more time and attention to dedicate to these "new things". When a women in her late 30s, 40s tries games for the first time she wont be breezing her way through a game like Corruption two months later.

Its a slower process, 1- Wii Sports/Wii Fit , 2-bridge titles like Mario Kart Wii, 3- Super Mario Galaxy and so on. Even if they dont get past stage 2 it created a habit in that houseold, a habit that will be carried to others, kids, teens, husband etc...

The first thing you learn in marketing is that the women is the most important and influential member of a house.

Isn't that what most Nintendo fanboys say about the new audience that Nintendo is marketing to? Ragnarok1051
Only nintendo fanboys? Nope, i think everyone with a brain and capable of listening acknowledges that thats what Nintendo is trying to do now

How bout you count out the people who bough them as replacements, bought multiple ps2's for their children, You don't think that their are over 100million ps2 owners that are all like.. "omg, teh hardcore' do you? There was/is an abundance of casual games on the ps2, even Sony themselves provided a lot of it(ie: the loads of Eye Toy games?). Casual games and casual gamers have been around since the NES(probably the Atari), to deny that is to prove one of three things.. 1.) You're too young to remember the NES 2.) you're an Ignorant fanboy or 3.) You just don't care to admit the truth.

I've actually seen a mother of an old friend in her 40s play Super Metroid years ago. And enjoy it. Thats more impressive to me. I think she was a rare case though.

That in itself is a Myth. We all hoped and assumed this would happen. The wii is still making these so called "casual" games. Which lack.. addicting qualitys to them. So in turn bridge games do not work.

Trying, but not succeeding.
