I'm gonna have to agree that the presentation was utter shit.

It's a new console. A presentation of such shouldn't be awkward and cringe-worthy, it should be fun. The only people that made me smile was Miyamoto and Aonuma. And they were shown for 2 seconds.

@charizard1605: how can it be "abundantly clear" when you yourself told me it was primarly to be seen as a handheld yet Nintendo had to clarify this week it was home console?

To be fair, they didn't make that clarification because the concept is confusing. They made that clarification because they were asked if the Switch would replace the 3DS line.
It seems clear that Nintendo will see how the Switch goes before making any decision to kill of a very successful existing product line like 3DS.

Remember that a very similar discussion happened when NintendoDS first came out - "will this replace the GameBoy?" was the question at the time. Nintendo steered away from that until they were confident enough in DS to confidently kill off the GameBoy.

There is no such confusion. The reveal trailer from several months ago already demonstrated to the average consumer what the Switch is:

Loading Video...

It's not remotely comparable to the Wii U, where the title created confusion for the average consumer, not making it clear that it was a new Nintendo console, rather than some Wii add-on.

Also, the biggest mistakes in gaming history were Atari's blunders in the early '80s, which crashed the home video game industry, before Nintendo came along and revived it.

The problem with the Wii U unveiling for me came in two forms.

1. They didn't show the console. They only showed the tablet controller which made it unclear whether it was a new system or an update to the Wii.

2. It was called the Wii U. The name itself was too similar to its predecessor.

The 3 minute First Look trailer for the Nintendo Switch did a great job of explaining what the system was. I think the general consensus is that people understand the concept clearly. The only element of the Nintendo Switch I am still confused about is how the 'HD Rumble' works on the Joycon controllers.

How could Nintendo have done a better job than with their announcement video. I understand what it is the very fist time I saw the announcement and so did my wife who rarely plays some PC games on her Notebook or phone. So if a casual and I can understand it by watching the announcement video, how can anyone really struggle to "get it"?

It was pretty clear to me. Other people that are not into gaming around me see it as a new handheld and don't care about the console part, the only thing they don't understand is why there is no mario game for it. Isn't that always the case?

Should have launched with mario.

Anyway, every single one finds it to expensive and i'm not shocked.

@DocSanchez: But that's wrong. They were asked a question about 3DS, and they answered it by drawing a distinction between it and Switch.

Nintendo has not mentioned a number of things or if Kimmie and friends did speaking they left much to assume and ponder. Just off the top of my head: The online service, VC, BC (for digital purchases), voice chat, the rumors of a trophy/accomplishment/achievement system, Miiverse, etc.., Granted, maybe some of what I listed was addressed during the show but the translator clearly did not want to be there and it effected his translation.

OP creates thread, disappears without even 1 single answer. Roger that then.

Also, not sure how they're the same. Sure, Nintendo is making some dumb decisions regarding online and pricing, but otherwise doubt anyone would ever confuse this with the WiiU or not know how it works. They repeated it for every single game they showed.

Nope, the switch is the exact opposite. new name, simple message, clear delivery of both to the consumer.

It's a console you take on the go. They convey this with zero language in their trailers. I think they should stop focusing on the joy cons and keep emphasizing the pick up and go aspect.

Also the best feature they should show more is how one controller turns into two. It's the first time you can play two players with one controller.

I would describe it as amateurish. At least the actual Nintendo reps on stage, not referring to the producers and technical presentation which were actually OK. I mean conceptually though, the whole console and everything in the way they presented this seemed like it was conceived by a child. Cringe worthy garbage.

But it was clear that it was a new console. So I'll give them that. But I did find it hilarious that within just a few minutes they were talking about pay for online. They did this BEFORE discussing any features they were offering or how they were bringing their online infrastructure up to par. We know nothing about that. Shouldn't they have waited to see how it goes before even announcing those intentions? Considering the state of Wii-U, and the total lack of online infrastructure, this came off as insanely delusional to me.

I can't imagine ever doing that though (using those mini controllers as 2 controllers). I would just get a few Pro controllers like I have for all my systems. When I stick with a hardware over several years, I usually end up with piles of controllers and joysticks. For PS3 I had like 4 Dualshocks, a fight stick, a wheel, etc... and fortunately some of those are PS4 compatible. I didn't play my 360 as much, but i still had a couple of extra controllers.

I do agree they should emphasize the "on the go" aspect, and that is because this system is in fact a tablet. It is not a home console.

Exactly. Even "casuals" understand it. And yet so-called "core" gamers claim to be "confused"? They're "confused" because they're looking for a reason to be confused, because of how much they're over-analyzing it. But for "casual" audiences who don't care about the little details, there is no confusion, as the concept is straightforward.

People know right off the bat that this is a new console, unlike what they did with the Wii U.

That alone is a step in a right direction.

I feel the console is too expensive. It's got less power than a PS4, but costs almost the same. They rent you old games and voice chat has to be done through your cell phone. Canadian proces are something close to $400.. wtf? It's 'like' a tablet, but its not a tablet and its far less capable than a tablet, except it plays better games. Own a ps4 or x1? Chances of you buying any multiplats on the switch are practically none then.

I call it Last Generation blindness that the hardcore are infected with. Seems that the hardcore only wants games catered only to them and no one else. They think Phones and Tablets will help keep the "dirty casual" away from gaming on the Xbox an Playstation.

it looks like they want to tackle the home console market and the tablet market at the same time. I could see it being more attractive to mobile gamers and hand held gamers then console gamers TBH.

They've completely rebranded, down to bringing out a retro colour scheme (white on red) and have differentiated this from everything they've made before.

Seems like you are trying to stir the pot with a falsehood.

I have no issue with how they explained hardware or software.

What I did have issue with though is how they haven't explained the ONLINE part of the system. There's more to it than the silly monthly game rental thing and phone app, right? What is the damn price? WHY WOULDN'T YOU EXPLAIN THIS STUFF WHEN YOUR SYSTEM LAUNCHES IN LESS THAN 2 MONTHS!?

Paid online through your OWN device...lolz

$10 Game price increases from last gen. Guess they were bleeding too much money with the failure of Wiiu they had to increase game and start charging for online.

Sad.

Games like Inside,Rayman, Puppeteer, Brothers, Cuphead, ect and tons of games, especially from indies show there are plenty of games that fill that. Dont act like Nintendo somehow magically has that market, becuase that's not true and they don't

It's just Nintendo not giving a shit about hardware again. Only this time they raised prices of games, charged for online through your OWN smart device and overcharging for the hardware you get.

If the Switch is being marketed as a Wii U successor, the price of the games was never raised.

@Jaysonguy: I think the OP has a point, although I'm not sure to what degree he is correct. If you were to poll random people who have heard of the switch (not system wars level people) and ask them what the system is all about and why would you buy one I think it would be illuminating. One thing I think that Nintendo has on their side is that those who didn't upgrade to the Wii U have had a lot more time since the Wii and might be looking to buy a new video game console so they might still buy a switch.

As we've gone over above, most casuals have no issues understanding what the Switch is, which was made very clear from the reveal trailer. The only people who are confused are System Wars level "core" gamers, who are over-analyzing every little detail and confusing themselves in the process.

The Switch isn't hard to figure out. If you need assistance just let me know.

This console sounds horrible in just about every way, and I'm not surprised Nintendo pulled it off again.

would you rather another ps4/one clone? because they are pretty much the same shxt. The switch is not for everyone. i get it. But i keep seeing people ask nintendo to do the same exact thing the hd twins are doing with less support. Just so they can receive some imaginary street cred from some random gamers that post on gaming forums.

If the switch would be another failure like the wii u, then they might change, but they might not either. The wii u isn't exactly a major failure as well, they sold 14 million units, if they made profit of the units and off the games, that covers the expensives, the wages of the employees and the shareholders don't do anything about it, nothing is going to change.

Something either fails or succeeds. The Wii U failed and such a showing should be the motivation needed to put forth a better console.

Well that is the message they are conveying. We know that the average consumer counts on the company to define its product. Look what bad messaging do to the WiiU and X1.

I haven't heard of anybody who doesn't understand what the Nintendo Switch is. It's not hard to understand that it is a console and handheld hybrid.

Interesting, so what you're saying is that there was no confusion at all and Nintendo decided on their own to spend time and money explaining what their new hardware is this close to release?

What was their motive?

To actually have a reveal for the console, which it so far has not had outside of a 3 minute YouTube video?

I'm not talking about their little show they did.

I'm talking about the release less than a week afterwards explaining what it is.

That wasn't a release, that was an answer to a very specific question Reggie was asked about 3DS.

Nintendo says it is a home console period.

Sony said the PlayStation Move was a major new platform for them, was that true, too?

Companies say all sorts of things during marketing, it's your job as an informed costumer to sift through all the bullshit.

Well that is the message they are conveying. We know that the average consumer counts on the company to define its product. Look what bad messaging do to the WiiU and X1.

Nintendo's marketing for the Switch is centered around its hybrid nature and portability. Most people don't follow video game company executives remarks obsessively, like people on enthusiast forums do.

This would apply to the "rumor" of the WiiU saying that the production of the system has stopped in Fall 2016.

It did stop production, retailers have had no new Wii U stock since October. So either production stopped, or Nintendo decided to sit on massive amounts of loss making inventory for shits and giggles.

It's Nintendo, so it could be either.

So i was right all along. Lots of people were shitting on me because there was no official announcements from Nintendo. But what kind of dumb company would announce this kind of 'bad news' when they're trying to make everyone hyped for their new system... Now that they've announced that there's no 1st party titles coming to the WiiU, it only makes sense to stop the production of the WiiU in advance.

I know and that's my point. Nintendo has to be clear and simple when communicating the broad message to public about the Switch.

Which, to the general public, they have.
