Nintendo or Xbox - who has been the better competitor to Sony?

Nintendo is the one platform that doesn't need to compete. I have a PS5 and I have a Switch. Several of my friends own PS5s or an Xbox along with a Switch. I've always felt like it is a great complimenting system.

I'll piggyback off of what @Jag85 said before, at least somewhat.

Xbox is the better direct competitor. Xbox360 vs PS3 was a close match. The closest Nintendo has been was N64 vs PS1. But Nintendo is the better counter, because they learned to not directly compete against Sony to do well.

Definitely Xbox since it's been on the market. Obviously Nintendo was better during the PS1 days as Xbox wasn't on the market.

I don't view Nintendo as a direct competitor but they are competing for the same resources. Microsoft is a direct competitor to Sony.

Niintendo. Historically, Nintendo has been battling Sega and Playstation.

neither xbox isn't doing a good enough job and nintendo is in its own world. Sony has a monopoly maybe PC gaming is competing with it a tad.

Sony has no competition.

Sony are leagues above ms the gap is far too much to bridge. Nintendo are on there own path.

Sony seems to respond a lot more strongly to whatever XBox is doing. So Xbox

Tough call. As others have said Microsoft has been the stronger direct competitor. Nintendo definitely dominated in the handheld market though. Also while the Switch may not be “directly” competing it is still competing in general and the system and many of its games routinely dominate sales charts. Personally I could be a Switch only gamer myself and be quite satisfied.

I'd say Microsoft. They have been going toe to toe for decades while, Nintendo gave up on competing with them after the GameCube when they figured out they couldn't go toe to toe in power. They've done their own thing ever since. Microsoft is the direct competition, Nintendo is the side ho.

Nintendo are doing their own thing. They do compete for the players money but I don't think there's much of a direct competition.

Microsoft nowadays are trying to carve their niche too, but having to pick one I'll go with them because since the 360 days Sony was forced to adapt as a response to MS moves many times.

Nintendo and its not close nintendo makes good games unlike Microsoft.

Microsoft will be some good competition when they have worthwhile titles on gp. Give it 2 years.

The only thing Nintendo is competing with is emulators.

switch is a handheld/home console hybrid, it has its own market really

xbox is close in specs, shares a large majority of games, and is a home console, so I would say xbox is the more comparable competitor.

Switch was over 10 million ahead of the PS2 as of 46 months on the market. Now it's even further.

Even though Microsoft is competing with Sony, it is really a poor competitor.

Nintendo has left competing against both Microsoft and Sony generations ago and have a monopoly of any new market it enters: first with motion control with the Wii and now with the hybrid system that can act as both a handheld or a home console (Switch). Why are Microsoft and Sony allowing Nintendo to monopolize the hybrid system market?

Everytime Sony has tried to enter the handheld market against Nintendo they've gotten slaughtered.

If they want to create a hybrid they will likely get slaughtered again, and also surrender the arms race to MS.

Sony and MS are stuck in the smaller market battling against each other.

got to say MS. imo switch is to more casual audience. i have switch but it doesnt give me the same gaming satisfaction as pc/ps5.

@wonderwinner is right, PS2 is still the all time seller. As of 2020, PS2 has sold 158 million units. Also, it took Nintendo combining both console and handheld markets to even have the success it has right now.
