It probably wasn't the best choice of words. I'm just saying that the guy who made the statement probably didn't mean it as an insult, but it was miscontrued that way due to cultural barriers, language barriers, and people who want to find something to complain about.

Well, whatever. I just thought it was a rather odd choice of words for a marketing director to throw at it's core consumer base. I was merely trying to make the point that there are individuals who obviously would not consider it a compliment. I mean, if you went out tonight, met 10 people and called each one of them a geek, how many out of that 10 do you think would smile and consider it a compliment, lol?

If I'm not mistaken, 'Otaku' has a very negative connotation in Japan. Not as much in the US, though.

'Geek' can go either way.

Negative in Japan, worn with pride in the West.

It may be worn with pride by some, but if someone else were to use it to label a group, they'd likely be using it as an insult. That's just my understanding of it.

Both 'geek' and 'otaku' can have positive or negative meanings, but I'd generally consider it to be negative if used by someone that doesn't identify themselves as part of those groups.

I wouldn't call them idiots, as they've conned a lot of people out of their money this gen (myself included :P), but they're certainly getting fairly pleased with themselves. Sure, they're making a crapload of money, and sure, plenty of people are entertained, but there are also plenty of people completely dissatisfied with Nintendo's performance this gen. Hard drives are for geeks and otaku? While I don't believe that, exactly who has been responsible for sustaining the videogaming industry for the last 20 years? 10 years ago, videogames were thought of as geeky; hell, they're only now getting into the accepted mainstream. So if Nintendo doesn't think they need a HDD simply because they're not worried about "geeks and otaku", well...This is exactly the issue I've had with them for the last year or two, and exactly the issue you see plenty of non-sheep bringing up on these forums.

Watch it, Nintendo. The general public might be obsessed with your "gaming revolution" right now, but as the trendiness fades, so too will casual loyalty, and it'll be those exact same "geeks and otaku" you just dissed who decide how sucessful you remain within the industry.
