Nintendo Switch Tops NPD With Over 900,000 Units Sold, Zelda Attach Rate Over 100%

Nintendo Switch, the new home gaming system that people can also take on the go, has sold faster in its launch month than any other video game system in Nintendo history. The Nintendo Switch system sold more than 906,000 units in March, according to the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. That makes Nintendo Switch one of the fastest-selling video game systems of all time. Notably, this sales surge was accomplished in a nontraditional month for a console launch.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild game sold over 1.3 million units*. That total includes more than 925,000 units sold for Nintendo Switch and nearly 460,000 units sold for the Wii U console.

That means that Nintendo sold more of this game for Nintendo Switch than it sold Nintendo Switch systems, for an attach rate of more than 100 percent. This may be attributed to people who purchased both a limited edition of the game to collect and a second version to play.

Its is positioning itself in the same arena as the WiiU. The Switch is not a viable home console. Nintendo has to bite the bullet and own up to this being the replacement for the 3DS otherwise it will fail.

I am looking forward to Nintendo's E3.

They blame collectors getting one to play and one to keep sealed, but I think some people are buying the game even though they couldn't get their hands on a system yet.

Yeah. It outsold the PS4 this month.I expect the console to outsell the PS4 every month until probably October at this point. It will just depend on the amount of consoles shipped to the US in each month..

Nintendo fans buy multiple copies, collectors editions to keep, regular to play. Sony and Xbox fans buy used copies from Gamestop for $5 discounts, or watch the games on Twitch for free. Nintendo knows what they're doing.

But look at the software sales. Splatoon outsold Halo 5 and Bloodborne. Mario Kart 8 has a greater than 50% attach rate AND outsold Uncharted 4. The PS4 has an install base that is more than 5 times larger than the Wii U's.
