Nintendo Switch Tops NPD With Over 900,000 Units Sold, Zelda Attach Rate Over 100%

There's no such thing as a slumpy month, except for maybe January where everyone blew their cash in December on xmas presents.

The Switch would have sold the same numbers had it released in November, same goes if they XB1/PS4 were released in March.

Like i said January could be an excuse for consoles/games to sell below expectation, and don't get me wrong i'm not saying the Switch sold less than expected, i'm just saying your second reason is more or less BS.

Oh and what is the Switch going for in the US???

@iandizion713: They can't sell double when they can't even keep up with demand, the price of the Switch in Australia is way too high which is why i always see them on store shelves, lucky for the US they are cheaper.

The cheapest on this site is $450, and the highest $519 with Zelda. They should be $399 at the most with a game.

PS4 sold a million in 24 hrs in NA because it was released in a month favourable for console launches. The switch selling a million less then the ps4 in a non-holiday month is amazing. I seriously wonder how well the console will sell in november and december at this point.The switch is likely to outsell the wiiu in 12-16 months from now.

I can get an XB1 with a game for $299 at the same place, so yes it is overpriced which is why they are still on the shelves where i live, not saying that everywhere over here they are sitting on shelves, just where i live.

I won't be buying one, i'll just stick with my N64 when it comes to Nintendo consoles, but i wish them luck with the Switch though.

That is kinda questionable because we know splatoon sold over 4 million and maybe over 5 million with the data we have from nintendo while whatever little data we have from microsoft puts halo 5 at 5+million sold. And uncharted 4 will eventually outsell Mario Kart 8 on the WiiU.

I mean, that's cool, but that's also Nintendo's fault :P Not like they were forced to launch in March.

Had they picked November (either in 2016 or 2017) and they'd likely do 1 million (or more) in 24h like the PS4 did (in NA alone) or "globally"* (like the XB1 did).

* Global as in more than just NA. Like 13 countries or whatever it was.

In any case, very good start for sure! Super impressed with Zelda's sale's tbh. If you consider Japan, in which it should be reaching the 500k mark soon (with physical + digital), it's definitely a pretty damn big seller! And, as we've discussed before, it'll have an evergreen effect to boost it's sales over the lifetime of the Switch too.

Now, hopefully in the coming months Nintendo should be able to take care of any stock issues swiftly and enjoy "full" sales that actually meet the demand. I can see it dropping slightly up until July since some titles got delayed but afterwards it should pick up steam again with Arms+Splatoon 2 (not sure when MK8 releases but that should help too, of course) and just increase in demand until the end of the year.

yea, but after the holidays were over on january 1st the worldwide total sales were only 4 million....

which means it was hot as lava the first launch week then died down quite a bit.

No, higher minimum wage only that's been cancelled out by higher utilities price too like electricity, water, gas & food. Higher minimum wage doesn't mean everything else is cheap..IF only price of electronics are expensive & everything - (electricity, water, gas & food) else is cheap..that would be fine.

Period of the year DOESN'T affect the launch and sales of a new console successor. New console is a new console. Of course people will buy a new console and which month doesn't matter at all. Supply constrained can affect console sales, but not a period of the year.

This thing will have legs... finally got one.... it just feels great to use as a handheld, which I prefer over other methods tbh.... just feels right. excellent control and feel for a portable device.

Doesn't matter if it competes with the 2 boring consoles, it'l be the next 3DS, and in many ways... if your not a single-system-owning-system-wars-numpty its a flat out win over the pseudo-4k twins with 4-5 games worth owning after 3 years.

Well for the most part, you and I know that us U.S money isn't nothing to brag about. Sure we have the most powerful money but to us, shelling out $300 nowadays is expensive and the cost of living has skyrocket badly as well. But at least we have the cheapest gas here so that's a good thing :)

I must say I underestimated the Switch's initial success. Never though it would sell this well. Having a 10/10 game in a beloved franchise certainly helped.

But lets see how it keeps the momentum once the Zelda: BotW hype dies out...

Nintendo fans are among the biggest group in the collector's demographic chart. How else do you justify the success of things like amiibos, classic NES and other merchandise? If you go to ebay things like N64 games, NES/SNES, GAMEBOY games are among the most overpriced things in the gaming section

I wouldn't be surprised if GTA V on PS4 outsold the Wii U. At least I compared exclusives to other exclusives. If Uncharted is the end all be all like Cows claim it is, it would have a better than 1/8 attach rate. Exclusives are so important to Cows, yet they don't they buy them?

And the Wii U had an underrated library. It's exclusives list is more impressive than the PS4s and Xbox Ones. But of course when this argument is made, 3rd party support becomes the topic of discussion. The goal posts are always moving...

The game issue might come into play and might not. Right now it has a decent release schedule up to and including e3 at which time I'd wager the rest of the year and holiday will be properly addressed.

Irrelevant. Limiting supply or not, people still want the console. The supply has absolutely nothing to do with it.

In my area, you can buy Switch games but the console is nowhere to be found. Maybe lots of people buy games and will wait for the console. It's not like there would be a price cut in the month or two it would take to wait, and it's not like Nintendo drops game prices anyway.

Overall it was an amazing launch for Nintendo and I do believe that they will sustain this pace.

Are there any Xbox One, ps4, PS Pro breakdown numbers? Would like to see if the Pro is doing better than the PS4

I honestly believe that Nintendo will do that in a couple of years once the 3DS is finally off the market. I think they are doing the "three pillar" thing they did 10 years ago with the DS when they kept claiming the DS was not a replacement for the GBA or Gamecube. After a couple of years, the DS silently replaced the Game Boy line as Nintendo's flagship handheld.

It's a handheld in terms of hardware. I think Nintendo was trying to protect the 3DS and the DS brand in case it failed. If the Switch does well, I expect Nintendo to push its mobile aspects more and more.

Super Smash Bros for Wii U sold over 5.16 million copies while Street Fighter V might be lucky if it breaks 2 million this year.

Nintendo has the best selling first-party games on the market. That's a point that can never be argued. It's been that way since the NES.

The Xbox One is at 30 million if statements for third-parties and reports are to be believed.

Which if true is not a bad number for a system.
