@charizard1605:

Nah, don't think a simple ND (even a really great one) will be quite enough for this one.

They don't just need to talk to their current fanbase, they need to broaden their message, the overall excitement to a whole different base (unless they want another WiiU, in which case nevermind hehe). The best way to do that is to wow the "press" (I do use the term fairly loosely here) and get them actually excited. While a ND could eventually do that (though a lot more flags would need to be checked to achieve it I feel) something more akin to what MS and Sony did will get the press (and people) talking about it for much longer.

Stuff like podcasts, opinion articles, constant speculation on what it can be (assuming they don't reveal every single detail right away), how it's games will actually play, the possibilities of the hardware (gimmicks, connectivity, ecosystem, etc, etc), how it will fare against the competition and so forth. I recall 2013 being filled with these sort of articles for the PS4 and XB1. That, followed by good marketing (read, smart marketing) created quite the "hype train".

I dunno, maybe a ND can achieve that, but locking back I don't think they ever did achieve that sort of excitement (there were a few exeptions, Cloud on Smash comes to mind even if it was sorta short-lived) with that format.

Sure, Metroid has been in a rough spot for a while, but it's not like Retro is the only company that can make a good Metoid game.

@DJ-Lafleur: Well, based on recent trends (the past decade, almost), that does seem to be the case.

I don't understand, what's so bad about waiting till E3?

Nintendo isn't allowing enough time to build hype. If Nintendo is smart they'd do something simple like announce it and show a finalized design for the system. Or even something simple like the controller like Sony did with PS4. The instant its announced, all hell breaks loose. Nintendo would be smart to drop the bomb as soon as possible.

This. The longer they leave it to announce NX, the more I think it'll launch next year.

Thank you! Retro is the kind of developer that NEEDS to expand and broaden their horizons and Donkey Kong proved this (I'd say just let them finish their DK Trilogy). Just sticking them to Metroid will only solidify the arguments that "Nintendo needs to make something new and slow down/stop focusing on their overdone IP". In fact, there is straight up hypocrisy on it too. When Nintendo makes a new Mario/Zelda/Pokemon, it's bad, but should Retro announce a new Metroid (which already they have three games, plus a Trilogy compilation) that's okay?

Other M and Federation Force be damned, find another dev that could work wonders with it (and I don't mean sell the IP and derail it more).

Eh, Metroid Other M was actuallly pretty fun on the combat front and its boss fights.just bring those back while naturally expanding/adding to it, take out the stupid pixel hunts, as well as having a less flawed story, and boom there you. I thought Team Ninja did a fine job with Other M, and the game's most controversial part (the story) wasn't even handled by Team Ninja.

Who knows how the hell Federation Force will be like. I'm atleast willing to wait and see how the game turns out before judging it to any extent (let alone write a freaking petition over it...)

I'm sure if Nintendo wanted to, they could outsource Metroid or work together with another developer on Metroid (like they did with Other M, or like what they are doing with Star Fox Zero), or maybe even just use their own internal studios for Metroid. Retro shouldn't have to be the only ones responsible for Metroid.

Well, yeah, they can always trust another good developer to do it. But I guess at this point it's more of fans knowing for a fact that Metroid is going to be nothing short of awesome with Retro. With Retro they have, more or less, a perfect track record. Without Retro, it looks patchy, if not entirely bad.

As for Other M, it wasn't as much a bad game as it was a bad Metroid game, especially after the Prime trilogy (and then too, not really because of game design). I had fun with Other M, I thought it was a decent game. It just disappointed me hugely after the Prime games. I expected a certain level of quality from Metroid after Retro's handeling of the series.

I think people are severely overreacting. First of all, it doesn't even say E3 to begin with. This article doesn't mean there won't be a dedicated ND before E3.

Secondly, has anyone noticed the amount of NX threads last month. I think there is more hype there than people are assuming. If Nintendo announces now all hell breaks loose, but then what? Nothing until June? The conferences that MS and Sony held before E3 weren't huge from what I can remember. Sony hadn't even revealed what it looked like...this is not a big deal at all.

@charizard1605: Waiting till E3 is fine. Frankly, it's the best way to do it. A new console sucks all the air out of the room.

This leaves less than five months for the hype cycle. It's never been done before. Plus Nintendo also end up having to compete for headlines with whatever Sony and co. show, as opposed to grabbing them for themselves as they might at a dedicated event.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the Xbone and PS4 announced and released the same year?

And yes, it has been done before. SEGA did it. It was just a disaster.

@DarkLink77: PS4 announced in February, full blowout at E3. Xbox One announced in May, full blowout at E3. That's what I want from NX- say, a preliminary announcement in March, and a full blowout at E3. As opposed to saving the announcement itself for E3.

Yeah, I was just gonna edit Saturn into the post lol.

Well, they did say spring. That's a big chunk of time. There's the possibility that they won't wait until E3. Who knows, man?

This is very true. I guess I'm spooked by Nintendo having already done this with the Wii U before (it didn't go too well then), and the fact that their 'Spring' is usually late May/early June.

Huh? No, we know they at least have two new games (Pokemon 7, Zelda U) to also reveal, both are pretty big.

I don't know why they'd save an NX announcement till just E3.

I think we will know for sure if NX is any good if they're willing to announce specs for the hardware. If they're confident in the hardware power, then they will be proudly saying what is under the hood. If not then I think we can assume we're looking at a Wii U situation.

I don't think Nintendo is stupid enough to make the same mistake twice. I'm expecting something more akin to the GameCube in the PS2 era. More power than the Xbone, but maybe not as good as the PS4.

Not sure about that. Nintendo was pretty sheepish about the gamecube specs even though it was marginally the most capable.

It was also a different era though. Xbox kept screaming 'power power power' and it didn't help them. It didn't matter until we got into the Digital Foundry era. Now hardware specs matter. Hopefully Nintendo did the smart thing and made this thing strong.

Lol

I'm seeing a very vague bizarre WTF obscure reveal at E3, much like that WiiU reveal in 2011.

And then the hype dying rather quickly, along with the so called promised 3rd Party support fading away.

Not good Nintendo not good.

Nintendo already said that the NX was announced to address the issues that the Wii U was failing and that a large reason for that was because consumers complained that it under-powered compared to competitors. Besides, even if the NX is using the most basic 2015/16 chipsets, by default it should outclass the PS4 and X1, just due to the fact they're using tech from 2012/13.

It's Nintendo, so I'll go with the second option.

They've been very successful company since the late 1800's. I wouldn't exactly call them stupid.

They're successful in spite of their stupidity.

Nintendo is not stupid.

I'm having mixed feelings about this NX as much as i want Nintendo to remain competitive and hope their new system do well as much as i don't see much space for success for them especially how they insist on releasing their new console during mid gen cycle i mean we've seen how did that work for them it failed twice with Gamecube despite being more powerful than the competition and Wii U despite having that gamepad gimmick and i don't see NX doing better unless it's something fresh and different simply having a more powerful hardware than the competition wouldn't work (same as what happens to gc with ps2) third party devs will always design their games around the systems which have higher user base despite being the lowest common denominator (Xone and ps4) no matter how i look at it Nintendo will be fighting a really tough battle to remain relevant as a console maker.

Nintendo is going to pull a Sega Saturn...

"And it's available in retail stores right now!"

Oh god, I hope so, that would be delicious.

@bunchanumbers: "Nintendo would be smart to drop the bomb as soon as possible."

I agree with this.

March-April should be a special focusing on hardware.

E3 should focus on games

November release.

I think we will know for sure if NX is any good if they're willing to announce specs for the hardware. If they're confident in the hardware power, then they will be proudly saying what is under the hood. If not then I think we can assume we're looking at a Wii U situation.

That's true. Well, it at least didn't help Xbox get anywhere near the Ps2, but can you imagine if it was only as capable or weaker.

And I thought of this also, one reason Nintendo doesn't give out specs is because their 3rd party relations have been pretty bad, they pretty much said here's the dev kits and figure out what it can do yourself.

Now, they hired a new 3rd party relations guy, and they're improving all that stuff, so that's another reason they have to share technical details now.

Why because you say so? You don't generate the income Nintendo has over the years being stupid.

If analysts are expecting a reveal to come in the spring then why would you assume that means an E3 reveal is likely? Is E3 not a summer (and some times late summer) event? Summer is not spring. Also, this isn't even official. No need to get yer jimmies rustled :P
