"In just a week, the problems Nintendos (NTDOY) new home console is facing have cascaded into something sinister. The traditional post-New Year slump hit Nintendos home market in the week ending January 12 and exposed cruelly how weak the consumer interest in Wii U truly is. According to Famitsu, Wii U sales slumped from a pace of 70,000 per week to just 21,000. The ancient PlayStation 3 sold the exact same number of units, which is nothing short of a debacle for Nintendo.

No matter how weak the Wii U sales are now, they are likely to get worse. The launch dates of key games seem to be slipping from March quarter to June quarter, including the important Pikmin, Wario and Wii Fit franchises. The Wii U now must depend on Rayman and Lego City in coming months.lol

This is a scary prospect, because it now seems that Sony (SNE) is planning to unveil the PlayStation 4 in May and Microsoft (MSFT) is expected to announce the Xbox 720 in June. Nintendo rushed its console out in late 2012 to get a running start before the big guns of the home console industry grab the consumer interest with their new machines. That gambit may now be about to backfire in a spectacular manner. As demand for Wii U is already fizzling in Japan and key games slip from the first quarter of 2013, Wii U faces a very hard January-March period. Sony and Microsoft are then inevitably going to start leaking information about their new consoles in April-May time frame in the run-up to their big unveilings in the second half of the spring quarter.

The clock is ticking for Wii U. If consumers start smelling the scent of the grave emanating from the console just when Sony and Microsoft roll out their new gear, Wii U could face a sudden rejection in the market place by early summer. Nintendo needs some big new titles to revive its home machine very soon."

It is obvious that Nintendo have no future anymore.

When the Zelda U, 3D Mario U, Smash Bros. U, and Metroid U get announced at E3, it will sell.

Remember, 3DS was in the same post launch boat as Wii U is now. Then E3 2011 came and it was all good. Lets wait till E3 2013 before proclaiming any fail, because i am sure some awesome games will be shown and everyone will see Wii U's bright future.

The Wii U was made to fail. Nintendo made the system all wrong with that tablet controller. They should've made the system itself better and used regular controllers. Sad that they just release a system and it still doesn't catch up to what the PS3 and 360 can do.

The Gamecube has all those franchises, and only sold 24 million. I suspect a similar fate for the Wii U.

Remember when you kept predicting failure and doom for the 3DS? Good times, good times. Funny how that turned out though.

The problem is if Sony and MS announce and show off their PS4 and Xbox 3. It will make so anything Nintendo does is lackluster and people will see that the Wii U has inferior graphics and hardware vs PS4 and Xbox 3. It will be too far behind what the other 2 offer to entice people to buy it instead. The Wii came out at a different time and appealed to people for reasons that no longer exist. I will be very-very-very surprised if the Wii U doesn't get slaughtered in sales by the other 2 systems.

And then it becomes profitable as soon as a single game is bought http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/11/21/wii-u-becomes-profitable-after-one-games-sale Yep, nothing to see here after all.

It's going to be rough 2013 for a while , but the system will probably be $250 (the better one) by holiday and something like a Mario Kart rehash will come out of nowhere for holiday. The other systems will be $400 base models when they launch and the supplies will be somewhat limited.

That's why the WiiU is already more profitable than the Wii was? For every console sold they just need to sell one game and they turned a loss into a profit. Like I said "Nothing to see here."

The Wii it was just a cheap console for the kids......and that it was the reason it sell.but today the PS3 and XBOX360 they are cheap and they are sell like crazy and nintendo sales drop dead. And with the new awesome games for the PS3......the PS3 it will sell for a long long time.

This topic isn't about that. Trying to change the subject wont make the Wii U sell well. Nintendo has always sold tons of handhelds. That's not being debated here. Nintendo screwing up on their last console is what's being stated here. Nintendo's Wii U is facing a fate far worse than PS1, PS2, or PS3. Nintendo has always way outsold PS handhelds. That's where their money making is headed I'm afraid.

Many-many Nintendo fans bashed the heck out of Sony for how they released the PS3. Compared to how Sony did that Nintendo just screwed up 3 fold compared to that.

AtariKid, rising from the pile of dung under which he was hiding, after getting biblically owned by the 3DS, is the only subject worth debating. You can't hide from public humiliation for so long and then think you can just pop back into SW inconspicuously.

Hold on... COMPETITION? What Competition?
There is no next gen competition realistically til 720 and PS4 and games with new engines and developers behind them.

Best bet for Nintendo is to do more family friendly commercials to entice families and kids to buy em.
Most likely when Mario and Zelda come out.

With E3 and rumours of Next Gen already on the way.. Nintendo may have shot themselves in their own foot by releasing early and with cheaper hardware to get a head start.

I expect Sony has learned from the launch of the PS3 and they'll keep pricing $450 or less. As far as a tablet controller idea, I doubt Sony will go with that while seeing the Wii U fail being tablet based.

Huh? Consumers want games. The 360 and PS3 have sold due pretty much every worthwhile third party developer supporting them. The same is set to happen again with the next xbox / playstation. The Wii U, despite being comparable to current gen consoles, is still getting ignored by third party publishers. What chance does it have later in the year?

They aren't marketing it very much, I think they are just waiting for M$ and $ony to announce something, then they'll push it, along with announcing a bunch of titles that are ready to roll out close to the launch date of the wii u

The Wii U, despite being comparable to current gen consoles, is still getting ignored by third party publishers. What chance does it have later in the year?

All consoles sell based on games. I'm more interested in sony's and MS's online approach next gen.I want the next gen PS4 and xbox to impress me and graphics don't usually impress me.The 3rd party are ignoring ninty because of ninty's history with them, the graphics of the console(maybe) and console sales.I think ninty has a couple of surprises for WiiU owners.

When the Zelda U, 3D Mario U, Smash Bros. U, and Metroid U get announced at E3, it will sell.

Remember, 3DS was in the same post launch boat as Wii U is now. Then E3 2011 came and it was all good. Lets wait till E3 2013 before proclaiming any fail.

The Wii it was just a cheap console for the kids......and that it was the reason it sell.but today the PS3 and XBOX360 they are cheap and they are sell like crazy and nintendo sales drop dead. And with the new awesome games for the PS3......the PS3 it will sell for a long long time.

I'm actually glad about this. Maybe Nintendo will get off their butts and fix this system. They took the cheap route in so many respects with the wiiu, and that strategy has come back to bite them. A lot of people (me included) like Nintendo games and even like the idea of the wiiu, but we are waiting for a system that meets the minimum standard in quality. Anyone who buys a wiiu now is a sucker.

People keep talking about the 3DS, but that is a completely different market. What does the 3DS have competing against it in the handheld market? The joke of a handheld known as the Vita. Lets also not forget that the 3DS is a nice leap for the handheld market whereas the Wii-U is having trouble keeping up with the current gen.

It really isn't that far-fetched to think that the Wii-U will go on to be a failure. We have not one but TWO major competitors likely coming out in the next year and they could easily overshadow the Wii-U with their power.

Seeing as the Wii-U really seems to be having trouble catching the casual market the way the Wii did, it will be up to core gamers to support the Wii-U and that support is not a gaurantee with two potential powerhouses around the corner.

Obviously time will tell what happens, but it really isn't that crazy of an idea to think that the Wii-U could really fail.

Many-many Nintendo fans bashed the heck out of Sony for how they released the PS3. Compared to how Sony did that Nintendo just screwed up 3 fold compared to that.

Ninty's screw up is not as bad as theor previous scre wup with the 3DS.

No, it's worse.

but it is crazy to say the wiiu will fail though. Nintendo has a massive first party of game studios and they have billions in reserve cash to prop up the system. If the wiiu starts suffering real damage they will start throwing that money around, buying third party exclusivity rights, expanding their own studios, buying more advertising, and making the hardware itself more attractive through lowered prices and increases in quality. This isn't like Sega, where they were extremely poor and couldn't keep up in an arms race. The wiiU will likely not be as successful as the wii but it won't be a failure either.

How so Charizard?

Until Mario Kart 7 came out there was like 1 or 2 games avalible for the 3DS.

WiiU?

You have

  1. Mass Effect 3
  2. Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge
  3. Assassin's Creed 3
  4. New Super Mario Bros. U
  5. ZombiU
  6. Batman Arkham City Armored Edition
  7. Tekken Tag Tournament 2
  8. Call of Duty Black Ops 2
  9. Scribblenauts
  10. Nintendo Land

That's 10 games there, That's one heck of a Launch man. There's nothing new being released, ya, but look at this! That's TEN GAMES there you could have for your WiiU library.

10 right there!

3DS at the Same Time Frame? I bet not one of us who bought it at launch had 3 games to the system in the span of 3 months.

if the wiiu barely sells anything with that many games at launch, then that only makes the problem that much worse. Could you imagine if the wiiu had as few games as the 3DS when it launched?

Yet the Wii U attach rate is 1.2 LOL

ME3, NG3 and Arkham City are old ass games that everyones played on the 360 / PS3. BLOPS2 and AC3, better on 360. So you have a rehashed Mario game, you typical weak ubisoft launch game and Nintendoland, nintendos failed attempt to recreate something a simple and great as wii sports.
