The concept has me intrigued (go from planet to planet, explore those planets, etc) but i still would like to know what exactly do you do on these planets?

@jg4xchamp: so the bullshit meter is off the charts? Lol.. I guess for me I'm most interested in not simply buying a tech demo... I want a game. I can deal with questionable pacing or throw away narrative etc in the event this is a new thing... But, I really don't want to have the "what is the point of this" feeling.

Eh, I look forward to it's release to see if it really does meet expectations. If it doesn't, well, it's not like the sales will suffer that much anyways with the inevitable pre order hype train.

I really hope that No Mans Sky is great but I cant help worry about how the game will turn out. To me it looks like the game will have nothing to do but fly around differently colored planets just looking at things. Since the game will release on PS4 first ill at least get to see how the game is received by gamers before deciding weather I want to buy it for the PC. Most of all, im looking forward to these cockpit type games for the retail Oculus Rift when it finally releases.

I don't think it has to be the Second Coming or be labelled as a failure. Because we know so little about the game we've got a lot of people letting their imaginations run wild, even though they know at some level they aren't being realistic.

NMS is going to be a game, and might end up being a good game at that. But it isn't going to change the world. People need to calm down. (That said, GIMME A %^#*Â¥ing release date/window!)

I think if you're expecting the right thing, it'll be amazing. We know there will be incentives to do things such as travel to grand line the center of the galaxy; we know there will be threats that will pursue you and put you in tough situations. It won't all just be go to X planet and take screenshots. The devs aren't stupid, they know that doesn't hold up as a proper game, and that isn't their intention.

If you go into it expecting there to be quests and a clear storyline, then yeah, it'll likely disappoint, from what we've seen do far. If you know what to expect from the game (and after all the information they've given us, I don't know why anyone would expect different) then sure, it can easily be a great game worth your time.

Will it be the next gaming Godsend? No, probably not. Doesn't mean it can't get a 9 if it pulls everything off properly.

Looks like a bullsh*t game to me but i would love to know later on that it has a good story because as of right now it looks like a flying in space simulator.

If people want to get hype over this game how about wait for them to show more of the game instead of the exact same thing like the last videos about it.

@finalstar2007: I'm not counting on a story, but I am worried about the concept of discovery and how they'll label each planet with the name of the person who discovered it... Like, I get that there are billions of planets etc, but does that guarantee while I'm working a 9-5 some super fan will be labeling every single planet? I'm worried about there own metagame breaking down within the game because of teh trollz

The first thing you do is get in your ship and fly straight. For like an hour. Maybe even two hours. Then land and claim your planets name! Easy peasy!

I see what you are saying though. Like that guy that has prestige'd in CoD the first day or two. That type of guy has too much time and could be hording planet names and god knows what else. It could be a letdown if every planet in a zone is named "XboxTurnOff" or something.

I agree but the devs are certainly feeding that hype as much as possible. Part of the problem with so many games now isn't the product itself, but what we are lead to believe the product will be and then it falls so so far short.

@kuu2: it's a mix of teh cloud and teh cell.... Developed by God....

But seriously, for me it's all about the ID... I can play any game... Hell I'd prefer for the game to take a massive risk than play it safe with something familiar, but it still comes down to "what exactly am I doing here?"

@TheEroica: You're exploring. This is enough for me. Cataloging the flora and fauna and upgrading equipment to be able to seek out more flora and fauna are enough for me; it's what I expect from this game.

The thing that worries me the most, is that lots of people is still wondering...what do you do in the game? and the developers have hardly answered this, sure they can talk about planets and exploration and almost infinite areas to explore...but, what do you do? you go to planet to planet and do what? explore? for what? is there something to find? something to fight? something to achieve? something to discover? will there be civilizations to find and interac? will there be evil empires to take down?

As i understand the main goal of the game is to reach the center of the galaxy, but meanwhile, what do you do? is definitely a very important question and nobody seems to know the answer and that's something to be really worried about.

I expect it to disappoint.

The game world sounds massive, but I will really have to see play/see it. I don't think that the game will deliver on size and scope, which is the central point of the game. The developers make it sound like the world is endless, with lots of galaxies, and each galaxy having a system, and each system having planets, etc.

From a gameplay standpoint, I hope there's more to it than just exploring and a few dog fights.

@Minishdriveby: I'm all for exploration being the draw... Hell, the very idea of massively expansive exploration makes my pants tingle. Keep in my mind I'm the guy who lives to drive the mass effect mako around empty planets because it makes me feel like a space traveler...

In that sense, if the game is simply a space travel game, I'm probably still going to be satisfied with it...

I guess for me I most want to know what the games moment to moment ID is.

lol @ people saying how much they like the 'concept' while having absolutely no idea what the concept is. Nobody knows what you do in this game despite all the coverage it's had.

I've read an interview with the maker of the game and he basically says it's great you can fly around anywhere and explore. Explore what? Is it too much to ask what the fucking point of the game is?

Nobody knows what you do in this game which leads me to believe the devs don't actually know either. They're going to give you a world to explore with nothing in it and when you find a planet you can say wow isn't that cool? Now what?

This game is going to blow.

The game is just bullshit.

Think of Minecraft but without the crafting.

It just doesn't look exciting, there's nothing that makes me think that I'd even care doing what I saw in the trailer regardless of the fact the trailer was really a predetermined series of events that was set in perfect conditions that made the game look its best, and it still looked like it could wear off after an hour or so.

The one thing they have to do to make this game have any longevity is to put on some base building mode, something like what is in Medieval Engineers, as then you'd have clans owning planets and star systems building huge cities etc. They could make a trading post for materials needed to build certain structures or colours of the constructions and then you'd get a good economy that encourages people to explore. At the moment it looks like anything you do will get old fast, so unless something is implemented that allows people to have a sense of progression and ownership other than a better ship I don't think people will stick around long on the game before finding the next novel thing.

It's an industry changer in the fact that it will be one of the first times a company attempts a game of this scale with a fully 100% procedurally generated game that isn't capable of being run on cellphones (Minecraft). It's going to revolutionize large scale gaming I think, but for players and people who purchase the game thinking they are going to get a starwars like space sega with loads of shit to do, they'll be disappointed.

It definitely has a dangerous amount of hype around it... which almost never ends well.

But it does look pretty cool so I guess fingers crossed (even though I don't currently own a PS4).

Bullshit.

Cloud Imperium Games made some ridiculous promises a couple years ago when reaching out for funding for Star Citizen. They have been delivering (and then some) on many of those promises already, and are being incredibly transparent regarding it's production the whole way through.

We've barely seen anything that even remotely resembles the promised product that got my imagination racing a couple years ago when No Man's Sky was announced. And when compared to something like Star Citizen, it, quite sadly, pales in comparison.

It just seems too ambitious. I think if the planets are procedurally generated, they'll end up being uninteresting and repetitive. I'd love to be wrong, but I'm expecting to be underwhelmed.

They crafted thousands of assets by hand. The characteristics of the planets will be based on how far or close are they from the sun. Closer to the sun means less vegetation maybe a desert, little water. Far from the sun will be darker and colder. Etc. Based on this the planets will be populated by the hand crafted assets.

Nothing in this game will be by chance/random, everything will be controlled by mathematical formulas. Almost like real life if you think about the fact that everything about the universe can be explained through numbers.

Good fucking god you are drowning in the goddamn Kool-aid.

I think the game is bullshit.

I looked like it was gonna be great but from what we keep seeing from it, it seems like the game is just not really there an are just using set up cinematic trailers to get people into the hype.

No Man's Sky to be the next flop.

@sts106mat: mo-cap funding maybe? It is an indie game, though I'm not sure who's actually funding these guys.

I kind of figured that the polish we see in the heavy funded AAA games wouldn't be as prevalent in no Man's Sky.... I'm cool with it.

Question about randomly generated world. Isn't it just become like randomly generated arena game? Unless the generated planets persisted in the world, you can't really say you explored a section of the world when the planet disappeared after you played it.

the planet itself is not what is being generated but what's inside of it. Based on the distance of the sun the planet already has its atmosphere, kind of vegetation and stuff set on stone but nobody will ever land on the same place of the planet because for each player it will be completely new.

Gamespot has a video series about this game where they explain that but don't remember on which of the video.

It seems too ambitious right now, but we'll see if they can pull it off. exploring thousands of planets and having space battles with aliens sounds great, but there needs to be a LOT more to do. Things like colonizing and mining planets. Building better spaceships, spacestations and various buildings on each planet. Able to hunt and fish would be interesting as well. If this is just an exploring game with a few space battles thrown in, it's not going to fly.
