I think it will be slightly disappointing, but I'm still getting it to support one of my favorite genres on consoles (space flight sim).

The next few months will determine alot. We've only seen the exploration side of the game. No word on combat, pirates, resource gathering, hostile creatures, ship upgrades, etc. This will determine if it lives up to the hype, or flops like a fish on shore.

Elite Dangerous is already proof that randomly generated gets stale very quickly.... and games like Starbound vs Terraria ..... having more places, and random gets boring faster than a smaller but hand crafted universe.

Out of the big 3 space games..... I rank No Man's Sky the lowest... a little arcadey experience that will grow old in hours.

ED ... needed another year in the oven.

Star Citizen .... because it is handcraft and enphasis on social from day -1 . That and they could easily add out-systems that are generated to make it bigger... but the project as a whole despite being much smaller scale (Universe wise) .... is far bigger and ambitious than both.

I think it's gonna end up being a great game for those into the sandbox, but misunderstood by a significant portion of the large audience that it has reached.

Much of the audience will probably feel that it's aimless and needs some more structure or direction in terms of spoonfed goals.

And for the most party they would be right.... ED and Starbound are examples of this.

I think it's a little bit of both. The dude used to work for Criterion and those dudes had incredible coding chops.

If anybody can pull off the technical side of this he's definitely one of the people who could. Now that doesn't mean he's a great game designer, so the jury is still out on if everything can be pulled together.

I'm hopeful that it turns out great.
