Nintendo DS Crosses 50 Million Units Sold

The best-selling video game system in U.S. history reached another milestone in September: Lifetime sales of the Nintendo DS™ family of systems have surpassed 50 million units, according to the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States.

"The Nintendo DS forever changed the gaming landscape, and the fact that consumers continue to embrace the platform is a testament to its value and mass appeal," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "Our hand-held story continues with the Nintendo 3DS system, which just had its second consecutive month of growth and enters its first holiday season with a monster lineup of games, including Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7."

Other Nintendo milestones reached in September include:

Nintendo sold more than 260,000 Nintendo 3DS™ portable entertainment systems, an increase of more than 10 percent from the previous month. Nintendo has sold nearly 450,000 units of Nintendo 3DS following a price reduction on Aug. 12.
The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time™ 3D became the first Nintendo 3DS title to surpass 500,000 total units sold in the United States.
Nintendo sold more than 647,000 total hardware units in September, including 240,000 Wii™ systems and more than 145,000 units of the Nintendo DS family.
The 273 million software units sold for the Nintendo DS family equates to more than 107,000 games being sold per day, every day for almost seven years. More than 273 million units of software have been sold for the platform in the United States, including 24 of the top 25 and 43 of the top 50 best-selling portable games in this hand-held generation.Nintendo PR

Xbox 360 maintains its lead over the current-generation console market, poised to finish 2011 as the best-selling console.

Kinect momentum continues with a growing portfolio of more than 75 Kinect for Xbox 360 titles in the market by holiday – four times larger than last holiday. A robust Kinect portfolio, blockbuster game releases, major entertainment partnerships and new hardware offerings prime Xbox 360 for a record holiday sales season.

September 2011 NPD highlights include:
· Holding 42 percent share of the overall current-generation console market, Xbox 360 sold 438,000 units in September, maintaining the number-one console spot in the U.S. for 2011. "Gears of War 3" launched on September 20 and sales have already soared past three million copies worldwide* in the first week, pushing the franchise beyond one billion dollars in lifetime sales*.

Oh the game will absolutely have legs. Gears 2 outsold Gears 1. And Gears 3 has sold at a faster pace in the same amount of time as those 2. Gears 2 sold over 6 million units. I could see Gears 3 selling over 7.5 million units or even 8.

How the hell is 36o selling like that, and how did PS3 not beat it after a price drop? I can't believe we won't see a price drop out of Msoft before the year is out.

well we'll see. i just have that hunch. That COD will remove whatever legs the game might as well have had. won't be suprised if it sold just a little bit more than gears 2. like 6.5 million or something(which is very very good)

No Way. With how packed the Holidays are? and With Cod? Absolutely no way. The only time you will see Gears chart in the top 10 is october NPD's. If Halo Reach fell out of top 10 in just 2 months. Gears will not fare any better.

I think Kinect helped it a bit.

Also, lets not forget Gears 3 (to my understanding) never had a release date weeks before giants like Modern Warfare and Assassin's Creed. It could be detrimental to Gears 3 sales in the long run.

Anyway, updated OP with Nintendo numbers and software chart.

Good figures for Gears 3 and im sure the 3 million mentioned previously on herewill take Europe into account as well as other areas. In the UK there is some great deals to be had on consoles at the minute so im sure US will be similar. Im quite keen to see how Halo anniversary will sell as Halo titles have always done well, but with this being a remake who knows.

You can blame Sony's Marketing for that. The game could have sold better if they actually advertised the game. There' a New York City stage for crying out loud and yet they could not afford to tattoo the subway stations and billboards stating this fact. "even rage did this". Blane Sony marketing machine or marketing fisher price toy

Wii numbers were insane in it's prime, now everything feels average in comparison.

Impressive Gears of War 3 numbers and that's only in 10 days.

Although the 3DS number is an improvement over last month, the two HD consoles really created a big distance between themselves and it in September. I wonder if it will stay that way throughout the holiday season.

And what will happen to the Wii and DS - traditionally big performers during the holiday, but is this the holiday season where they finally fail to put up big numbers? Nintendo handheld buyers are split between two consoles now, and the Wii is starting to become yesterday's news due to lack of attention and a new hardware announcement.

Good point about the HD consoles pulling away from the 3DS. I honestly dont think it or the Vita will be a big success as the big portable gaming market seems to be casual 69p apps on ios or android.

The only saving grace i think the VITA might have in the westis to open up there system and allow a slew of apps to be made for the thing. Advertise the systems social aspects like no tommorow and they might have a chance.
