It's an improvement in the bigger picture. But it's actually down in weekly sales (5 week month vs 4 week August)Although the 3DS number is an improvement over last month.

I'm just saying because people are already claiming that it is because the 360 has more quality games and to spare lems of the shame of hyping worldwide sales until the official year reports come in :P Japan probably cancelled the difference in just one week and a half, actually. Between September 5th and 11th, the PS3 sold 64,786 units per Media Create and the 360 sold 1,219.Regardless, the 360 remains top-dog in America and seems rather unstoppable in that region. What will dethrone it? Wii U? a $199 PS3 price cut next year?
More likely, probably nothing, because MS could price cut anytime they wanted/needed. The fact that they did nothing in reaction to the PS3's price cut was a sign of confidence that they already own America, and it turns out they were right.

dude its Gonna be much bigger than it was last year. 360 had the launch of Kinect to drive sales last november, they will not have a repeat performance at this year. Ps3 is gonna clean house in JPN and EU this christmas. and They will do better this year in the U.S due to the release of Uncharted 3 and a cheaper console.

It's an improvement in the bigger picture. But it's actually down in weekly sales (5 week month vs 4 week August) Interesting, I had completely forgotten about that. With that in mind, 235K in 4-week August + 260K in 5-week September = 495K over a period of 9 weeks.[QUOTE="SakusEnvoy"]
Although the 3DS number is an improvement over last month.

Nintendo says they have sold 450,000 units following the August 12th price reduction. That means, in what accounts for nearly 2 weeks of August, pre-price cut, Nintendo sold only about ~45,000 units. The last 2 weeks of August, plus 2 days, they sold about ~190,000 3DS units. That's a rate around ~95K a week.
In September, they have averaged about ~52K a week. That seems like a big drop from the numbers they put up initially post-price cut.
(If anyone is curious: in this same time period the 3DS sold 291,320 units per Media Create.)
Japan doesn't equal the world either, the PS3 isn't dramatically outselling the 360 in Europe, in fact in some places the 360 has a advantage.Brean24

Even then it was premature. The UK market total revenue is smaller than the Japanese market, from recent figures. And even figures for 2009 (based on historic exchange rates as well I believe). The UK market in 2009 was 3.3 billion GBP. The Japanese market in 2009 was 5.43 trillion yen.

Last year they exceed MS by2.3 MM units worldwide for the year. All of that gap occured in Jan - Sep.They were dead even in Oct - Dec at 6.3 MM units each.
This year they will be in a virtual draw heading into Q4.
For the gain to be much bigger than last year Sony would have to outsell MS bymuch more than 2.3 MMunits in Q4 alone. That is not going to happen.

The 360 outsold the PS3 in annual year 2008 on a worldwide basis.
The 360 has outsold the PS3 worldwide the first 6 months YTD in 2011.
In a few weeks we will get the company Q3 reports which will likely show a 9 month deadheat due to the PS3 price drop.
In Q4 2010 they were exactly dead even.
When Q3 2011 is released we will see that the two companies have been in a virtual tie in the last 12 months (Oct 2010 - Sep 2011). There might be a slight winner, but the number is going to be small either way.

If the upper end of your estimate is correct for Q3 then it will be a deadheat going into Q4 as I said.
If your estimate for Q4 is also correct then the total 2011 gain will be 500K-750K.
In my books, that kind of gain on a yearly basis is minor. With those sort of rates of sales this generation is going to end in a tie for last :)
And my way of thinking is that a few millions units either way on product sales of 75 million or so (when the generation really starts winding down) for each of them is meaningless. Although I am sure SW will battle to the end pretending even 10 units is meaningful :)
