Dsogaming reports from Game24:

NVIDIA has just announced that GTX980 will cost %549 while its little brother (the GTX970) will cost $329. The green team claimed that these cards will be available for purchase starting Friday, September 19th. Moreover, the GTX980 will come with 4GB of VRAM, 2048 Steam processors and a 165W PSU requirement.

Here are the full details for Maxwell:

A lot of benchmark websites have released their reviews for both the GTX980 and the GTX970, so be sure to visit them.

As we’ve already said, Maxwell will support DX12, VXGI (Voxel Global Illumination), MFAA (Multi-Frame Anti-Aliasing) that offers quality similar to MSAA 4X but has the performance impact of MSAA 2X, and Dynamic Super Resolution (NVIDIA’s downsampling method).

NVIDIA has also revealed some benchmarks that can be viewed below.

Anandtech review - link

In conclusion, the GeForce GTX 980 represents another stellar performance from NVIDIA. Their reign at the top is not going to go unchallenged – AMD can’t match NVIDIA on performance, but they can sure drive down prices – but as was the case in 2012 the crown continues to securely reside in NVIDIA’s hands, and once again they have done the technical hard work to earn it.

Finally, as a reminder we will be following up this article next week with our look at GTX 980 SLI performance and a look at the GTX 970. Of the two cards launched today the GTX 970 is without a doubt the more interesting of the two thanks to its relatively low price compared to the performance NVIDIA is offering, but due to our aforementioned board issues we will not be able to take a look at it until next week. So until then stay tuned for the rest of our GM204 coverage.

I wonder how AMD will react to the 970. It sounds like they'd need to do some series price cutting to compete with it, and with Nvidia already being the better selling brand that may not be enough.

The 970 is surprisingly cheap. Equates to about £200.

No not really but these benchmarks really only show what the card can do with older engines.

It's like showing dx 10 on dx 11 cards but I understand your point. By the time this engine is used, we will be a lot further in the future.

The dsr can be used instantly though, so can the instantvr. I don't know about the mfaa though

The jumps in performance over the 780 aren't huge and it's actually a bit weaker than the 780ti in some areas. So that wouldn't look that great.

The 680 series was a huge jump in performace/power consumption, that's what the 900 series is. The GTX 980 can perform at the same level as a GTX 780ti but at nearly 100 watts of power less. That's a massive improvement. Basically they are getting way more from less power.

The GPU performance increase is secondary to the power efficency increase. That's the point of the first run of Maxwell cards. They couldn't get the 20nm dies to work though. Those have been put off until a later date. The new architecture can still be applied to the 28m dies and still save a lot of power. When the 20 nm dies finally become a reality we'll see a big jump in performance, heat, and power consumption again.

It's a necessary jump in power consumption efficiency and heat. Can't keep going more powerful without managing that.

If you would have seen the show you wouldn't say that. There's a lot more to this than just power efficiency, the tech in the gtx 9 series is simply revolutionary.

I like these cards especially the low TDP's. I would have liked to see the GTX 980 at $500, but both cards seem reasonably priced. I've not seen the review for the GTX 970 so I dont know how it compares to the GTX 980, so that may end up being a very good option for a lot of people. Still I'm a little disappointed, as its just a small upgrade over previous cards, it reminds me a lot of the GTX 680, and 670.

The most amazing thing about the GTX 970 and 980 are the TDPs! 145 watts and 165 watts - spectacular. I have only a 470 watt PC and have been afraid to upgrade past the GTX 660 Ti, but now the 970 provides a clear path. I'll probably get one before the end of this year.

Given these rapid improvements in Glops/Watt, I can't help but think current-gen consoles would have benefited from waiting a while longer before releasing.

The Asus 780 Ti DC II already runs unbelievably cool and quiet, and it has a TDP of 250w...these new cards are incredible, I can't wait to see what the non-reference cards are going to look like, and especially what Asus may do with the 980 Ti.

Consoles, lol.

Looks like I am gonna go with a 3rd Titan Black SC instead of jumping ship to the 900 series. But anyone who skipped the 700 series should be all over the 970. That card is a great deal. 2 of those for just a little over 1 980 is a steal.
