Why are they comparing it to the 680?

The jumps in performance over the 780 aren't huge and it's actually a bit weaker than the 780ti in some areas. So that wouldn't look that great.

The 680 series was a huge jump in performace/power consumption, that's what the 900 series is. The GTX 980 can perform at the same level as a GTX 780ti but at nearly 100 watts of power less. That's a massive improvement. Basically they are getting way more from less power.

The GPU performance increase is secondary to the power efficency increase. That's the point of the first run of Maxwell cards. They couldn't get the sub 20nm dies to work though. Those have been put off until a later date. The new architecture can still be applied to the 22nm dies and still save a lot of power. When the 16nm dies finally become a reality we'll see a big jump in performance, heat, and power consumption again.

If you would have seen the show you wouldn't say that. There's a lot more to this than just power efficiency, the tech in the gtx 9 series is simply revolutionary.

No they are not revolutionary What Maxwell show cased new was DSR ( new type of 4k to 1080 supersampling) MFAA (faster new method in using AA vs MSAA) and new compression method to save memory bandwidth, better latency with VR. They kept on talking about how maxwell is 2x better then GTX 680 when in fact when compared to 780 series is not so special. The show is meant to wow you and they used vague examples and terms through out show case. Besides these features, they are not introducing a gpu series with mind blowing performance compared to 780's.

I think your just caught up into the hype.... The hardware may natively support it but it wont run it well enough in real time in games. We will need gpu's much stronger then the 970/980 to be able to produce VXGI graphics with acceptable speeds. Once maxwell is down to 20nm and their able to fit enough processors into the die that allows at least 2x the performance over 780ti/980, then we can start hyping real time Global Illumination.

Saying that it has "revolutionary features" is a bit over the top.

It basically has improved downsampling (which from what I've read will be implemented on 700 series card later on) and a new technique for AA. Nice features but nothing major.

VXGI, probably just a couple of games will implement some form of this.

However TDP is impressive and the 970 is the best bang for buck right now, at 1400MHz it surpasses the stock 980.

Feel sorry for people that recently bought a 770/280x

well , they don't have to make everything super realistic, they can just implement more than that they were doing.

And that's exactly what they will do, it's a selling point for a game.

Don't forget you can sli these cards as well.

Where did you get the 1400mhz bench for the 970?

I've been wanting to see some OC benches for the 970.

I heard someone got a 980 to 1500mhz on air.

We are a ways off in seeing voxel based GI in game engines. By the time we do start seeing a few games start using it (big if). Volta will be on the horizon, I dont see how it would be a selling point for a game when only a select few % would have any real chance in running it.

Not a very big jump in performance over the 780 ah well. 970 is priced very nicely though.

yes, and you have done what

look at benchies and that's it i suppose?

the 9 series is revolutionary

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/nvidia-takes-on-next-gen-lighting-with-its-vxgi-gl/1100-6422424/

Sounds good on paper but we need to see these features at work.

Still doesn't change the fact that the performance improvements are marginal

Being able to play at 4k resolution on a 1920 x 1080p monitor is pretty amazing..

I'm curious to see what the performance impact is. BF 4 has this and it kills the framerate.

Will you look at that. PC are starting to run games at 4k, high settings at 30+ fps. I bet by the end of next year we'll get $300-$400 cards that can run 4k at 60fps while the consoles will still be fighting over 1080p vs 900p at 30fps.

Overhyped, underwhelming games that you tout as the be-all and end-all of gaming. Meanwhile we enjoy a diverse range of underhyped, amazing games at 1440p and now 4k resolutions.

@topgunmv: I was at the game24 event in LA and the CEO said they compared the 980 to the 680 because that was their highest selling flagship card as of current, 11 million 680s to be exact.

on another note regarding these new cards I was really impressed by the VR Direct technology these new cards have, I got to try out a demo with a pc using a 980 and an oculus and there was almost no lag at all with the VR headset. I also got to try out some unreleased games like hzn1, dying light (which was really fun), The crew, gauntlet, and borderlands presequel. All those games were running at full 4k resolution at around 30 fps on a single 980, for comparison consoles are inching by on 1080p.

Damn, they really outdid themselves with this, I mean, I knew it was going to be more efficient, but a TDP of 165W with 780 Ti level of performance is phenomenal. And holy shit at the compute performance. AMD better do something fast now.

The gtx 980 is really impressive for a 165W tpd gpu. But I was expecting a little more performance increase over the gtx 780 ti. A 250W tdp maxwell gpu would probably be around 50-60% faster than the gtx 780ti. I guess that will have to wait until amd responses to the 900 series.

I have 760 myself and it works perfectly for every AAA game nowadays. But if you have to choose, i'd say the 970 is worth it for an extra 100 euros.

I'll keep mine. I can run almost anythign at 1080p maxed out settings. When i want to run at 60fps stable, i just tone down teh settings. Next gen consoles are so weak that we don't even need much anyway.

But man, that moment when i boguh it a few months ago, and that price right now. God damm it.

The benchmarks currently look pretty good, and it eats up less power. I'd go for a 770, but i'm afraid my PSU wont be able to handle it, but the 970 seems to have the same power requirements as 760.

Just gotta wait for it to become available locally.

I'm not a big PC guy, I know how to put them together and some other stuff but the tech behind it I really dont understand fully.

Looking at benchmarks it looks to be a 5-10 FPS jump from the 780Ti

True however that comes a much lower power cost. Look at it this way. If you have a Ti, don't bother upgrading. If you have anything less than a 680 then you can upgrade and get maximum performance/price.

So should I sell my 7950 and get a 980? I mean I'm in no real need for an upgrade but this is tempting.

The 970 looks like a good deal.

What are the EU prices? They're obviously not going to be 1:1 conversions. I wanna know.

I tried to hold off for these to come out but my GTX 590 dying earlier this year meant I needed a new card. I could have gone cheaper and bought a mid ranged card but being a hardware addict I had to get a 780ti. Guess I'll be skipping the 9xx series, just like the 6xx series, even I can't justify forking out for 2 high end cards in one year ;)

My money is already put aside for one of these anyway

Before anyone decides to point out that a single 780ti is not enough for gaming at 4k, I know but this monitor has an introductory price at £100 less than it will retail at in a month or so and it's nice to have some future proofing.

Enjoy the remasters and PC hand-me-downs.

P.S. The metacritic rating of the PC version of Hatoful Boyfriend is currently > that of Destiny.

PC > console.

@parkurtommo:

GTX 970 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-352-AS&groupid=701&catid=1914 £299.99

GTX 980 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-354-AS&groupid=701&catid=1914 £499.99 Factory overclocked and non reference cooler

or

GTX 980 (reference) - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-353-AS&groupid=701&catid=1914 £469.99

Obviously these prices are for Asus cards on Overclockers (not the cheapest combo) other manufacturer cards will be cheaper.

Not EU but certainly closer to what Americans pay

Yes those are the only games we PC players have... keep reaching for that low hanging fruit consolite. It's not like your precious Sony and MS beg these indie devs to port the games to their systems because they have nothing else to show.

Awesome benchmarks and nice to see Nvidia not gouging their fanbases wallets for once. I won't be upgrading till I see the 980 VS Fiji benchmarks then wait for a price drop.
