For the past month we've been talking about mid-range cards like the 6850 and 6870. Now its time to get down to business...

Nvidia GTX 580

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

This monster of a card is said to be launching next week:

http://www.nordichardware.com/news/71-graphics/41592-geforce-gtx-580-launches-in-a-week.html

I'll update once we get some benchmarks and a price. This may very well be the most powerful single GPU, and must I say Consoles really are falling behind :P

UPDATE:

UPDATE 2:

The GTX 580 has been launched in the price range of $550 to $580

What's the point of it? AMD released mid range cards and Nvidia releases a card more powerful than the 480? I don't get it.

Man you're late! :P

What's the estimated price on this thing? Metro kills my GTX 260 and I'm looking at a pair of 6850s or even 6870s since AMD does 3D now, the cards are cheaper than the 5xxx series, and don't consume much power.

I think they just want to knock the 5970 from the top.

Oh I see, from the way OP brought it up in the title I thought this was a way to combat the 6970 (which I have!).

Well I heard about it long ago... Only the fact it might release next week got me to jump on it. As for price I'm hearing $600, but nothing official, yet.

I bet you're going to need a flux compacitor to supply the 1.21 giga watts needed to power that card. Also the official price is over 9000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah mid range SLI or Crossfire seems to be the best for price/performance these days.

That is a nice card, but asking for anything over $400 is too much. If this is really Nvidia's next card, I might just buy a pair of GTX 460s.

from what ive read its only 10-15% faster than a 480 so it seems pretty pointless to me for the price they will be asking for it (probably in between 500-700) il wait and see how the amd 6970 fairs

the good thing about this version of Fermi is that it will be 20% more powerfull, use less power, and run cooler than the original gtx480.

so in another words, this is the real Fermi that nvidia couldnt launch on time, hence the number of sp's, which is 512.

thread.

Whats that? You want it to stay here? Kk.

On topic, it looks like a nice card. Apparently its going to drain more power then the GF100

Might buy dont know still waiting to see what AMD has to offer with the 6970. And from what I've heard both cards should cost about $499 onrelease date.

6970 will be using very expensive ddr5 memory chips, reaching speeds of 5+ghz

Why are move or kinect threads allowed, what about when there is a revised model of a console then? Since when is it not permitted to talk about an advantage of a system on system wars?

So what if consoles are falling behind? They keep making a little better and a little better videocards all the time. Nothing with a big jump in perfomance though that worhts the money. Not even mentioning how many rebranded cards nvidia has. Honestly not only this will be slightly superior than the previous model but it also has no use since there is not a single game left demanding enough to make use of this card.

My 480 runs really cool actually. It's ultra-quiet too (and it's overclocked, and thus faster). It's a wonder what an aftermarket cooler will do.

And yet you somehow took the trouble to read this far.

There are no games with vanilla settings that really need this kind of power. But increase the engine variables in Crysis far beyond ultra and you'll need all the power you can get.

What are you talking about? the 6950, 6970, and 6990 are all going to be released soon and will defiantly compete. Perhaps you have been missing for a while but ATI has been dominating in the high end market for the last year or so and i doubt they would give that up without a fight. The gtx 580 is just nvidia's thrown together attempt to combat the high end cards from amd that are releasing soon.
