@KBFloYd: SNES would be more accurate excuse me.
You got it right the first time around. The graphical style is closer to PS1 RPGs (2D sprites, 3D backdrops) than to SNES RPGs (all 2D).
Just googled that game, I have to say it looks very interesting, I might pick it up once it comes out for PC (which I feel there is a possibility for it)
Oh my goodnessssssss!!!!!
Japanimeeeeeeeee Goooooooooo!!!!
LMAO if you like this, have at it TC. I did my research and no. Enjoy.
Haven't played either, but I'm 90% sure I'd be way more immersed with Octopath than GoW too. I'm just not that amazed by good graphics like most people are. Devs don't really need to make good gameplay anymore, as long as the game is presented well, and I try my best to stay away from such games. If it's presentation I'm after, I'd rather watch a movie. From what I've seen, GoW's gameplay ain't much to write home about. Very popular with casual gamers from what I understand, but I've been gaming for 28 years. I want more than what a game like GoW offers. Unnecessarily tacked on RPG elements annoy me to no end as well. Fucking GoW. Fucking AC. Like... why do they have it? Makes them more of a chore to play rather than more fun. I'd much prefer the player to find different items with different abilities you can combine however you want instead of "yay, I got exactly the same armor with 2 more armor points on it. How exciting".
Just gotta say this is a dumb post.
Points from his post without playing the game
- Not good graphics
- Devs don't make good gameplay
- It's a movie
- Casual game
- Tacked on RPG elements
- It's a chore
- Same armor
- **** god of War
- I haven't played it
Sigh. I knew you're not a very smart person, but gee louise. Since you didn't understand shit, I guess I'll have to explain.
- Not good graphics - I'm not saying this at all in my post. In fact, I say that GoW has good graphics.
- Devs don't make good gameplay - Another thing I didn't say. I said devs don't really need to make good gameplay anymore as long as their presentation is good. Lots of people buy games from seeing cool trailers, for example. Or you can market your game to be the best looking game ever made, and people will buy it wihtout asking how the gameplay is.
- It's a movie - Another thing I didn't say. You don't have great reding comprehension, do you?
- Casual game - Another thing I didn't say. I said casuals like GoW.
- It's a chore - I was pointing to tacked on RPG elements in general, not necessarily GoW.
- Same armor - Again, I was just making an example of why I don't like tacked on RPG elements.
- **** GoW - Didn't say that either. I said "fucking GoW" as in "I don't think a game like that should have those RPG elements".
If you're gonna reply to my posts, it would be nice if you tried to use some of your brain cells first.

Good to hear the thread had at least one positive effect :D

Triggered, salty. But you pretty much said all those things. Don't know why your trying to deny it.
I find that hard to believe... OT story lacks any kind of cohesion and the characters have little to no reason to tag along for most of the chapters. It's a mess in most aspects, except for the combat which is top notch.
WRONG
The stories are very cohesive to eachother, with elements of one characters story interacting with another, and all tie together in the end. Its a narrative web, and narrative webs are ultimate cohesion.
@lucik1: @mandzilla: PES has been the footie gameplay king for almost this entire generation. And PES 18 remains the footie gameplay king. The top-tier critics like GameSpot and IGN rated PES 18 much higher than FIFA 18 due to its superior gameplay, while lower-tier critics also acknowledged PES 18 has superior gameplay but rated FIFA 18 higher due to other things like better licensing and presentation.
FIFA is football king and sales back that up. EA is SLAUGHTERING Konami.
Licensing matters, and EA delivered the fatal blow with the UEFA Champions League.
@needhealing: LOL. Yeah, just ignore my explanation and say I'm salty. Whatever helps you sleep at night.
What explanation? Everything I posted was a quote form your original post. You are just in denial. Just admit you spoke ill of something you haven't played, because hater be hating and it's cool to hate.

Why should I admit that I spoke ill of something I haven't played, when I clearly spoke ill of something I haven't played? I'm not even trying to deny it. You're the one who took points from your ass and said I wrote those things. Since there is zero reason and also pretty aggravating to speak with someone who has difficulty to understand words, I'm leaving.

Yes, please leave. You clearly just want to fight and not admit anything like a MAN!!!!
@texasgoldrush:
Of course FIFA is the footy sales king. While PES is the footy gameplay king. It's been the same story since the PS2 era.
And it's not a slaughter. PES is tied with Madden as the second best-selling sports game franchise. As long as PES prints money, Konami won't slaughter it like they did to their other franchises (yet).
Ive played both, beat GOW in a weekend, only 9 hours into octopath . But so far i agree completely with TC. Id buy octopath any day over GOW. GOW is a great game to pick up on redbox, not worth 60 bones. Octopath is worth 60 easily, you will get your moneys worth.
Does it have you yelling BOY every two seconds? GOW's story is so lame.
In my opinion, the story has always been lame. I don't like Kratos. He's everything bad about Aries men, and they are my least favorite of the zodiac. Fucking every person in sight, angry, violent, brutish, lack of class, etc. I did see snippets of my brother playing this one and it makes me nervous when he interacts with his son. He's supposedly more mature now, but I'm expecting the ball to drop and to see him go into a fit of rage. He just makes me nervous and anxious.
Though I guess I can see the appeal. He's a dude who's kicking ass and taking names while screwing women left and right. I can see why it's appealing for people like my brothers (both of them are in their 20s). Still, I don't like him or his game very much. : /
I think immersion is a stupid variable that has no real meaning, however, I would imagine that a 3D "world" should be more immersive than a 2D world. just by its nature.
Maybe the OP meant that Octopath is more captivating in its design and structure, which I would easily believe.
these childish and text box games can stay away from consoles and pc
childish? This is a post of pure ignorance.

Overall maybe, however, their sales have fallen hard since its peak a decade ago.
I have only skimmed this thread but I can assume the following points:
- It's not cool to like God of War because it's popular. Hipster douchebags alert
- Casuals enjoying a game is not cool either. HIPSTER ALERT. God forbid if you have a job and a social life that means you can't sink 90% of your woken hours in to gaming to not be considering a filthy casual. The salt is real
- We're comparing apples to oranges
- I've never heard of Octopath before today, but maybe instead of being an absolute childish thunderc**t, we should appreciate other games and give them a go
- PES has been rubbish since circa 2010, but before then PES > FIFA
@texasgoldrush: PES sales have picked up in recent years. After PES 2015 hit a low of 1.72 million, PES 2016-2018 sold over 11.48 million, averaging over 3.83 million each. While less than the 6.37 million that PES 2008 sold, those are still solid numbers. In addition, PES 2018 Mobile is doing great, with over 100 million downloads and its monthly revenue more than twice as much as FIFA Mobile. So it looks like Konami will continue supporting PES, which is unlikely to face the same fate as other Konami IPs like Castlevania, Metal Gear or Silent Hill.
@goodzorr:
Everyone is going to have their own tastes and preferences. It's not about being hipster.
But yeah, it is an apples-to-oranges comparison, since they're two different genres.
Also, PES has been better than FIFA since 2015, in terms of gameplay.
PES was better from the start. Most popular soccer game in Europe was PES 4, 5 and 6.
FIFA got better with 10, but no they are back at being garbage.

Yes I completely agree. FUT has ruined it for me. Used to play FIFA daily; haven't touched it in months.

But not enough to even challenge FIFA, which is telling as once they were on parity with them.
And really, Konami should bow out so we can have a game with every licence possible. PES simply put lacks the authenticity and the licencing of FIFA and that why they are getting clobbered.
@cainetao11: And yet "jrpg weab shyte" like Pokemon is the highest-grossing media franchise of all time, beating the likes of even Marvel and Star Wars by a wide margin. But sure, whatever makes you happy.
I never said it was a bad business venture.
They don't entice me to spend MY money or time playing them. If you need to like what sells the most then that's on you dude. "Look Mom!!! I'm just like everyone else!!!"
@cainetao11: "If you need to like what sells the most then that's on you dude. "Look Mom!!! I'm just like everyone else!!!""
So you're a lemming and have an X1 just to be different from everyone else? Well, being different is not always a good thing, in x1's case it's a loser's thing.

I played GOW to completion, got the platinum and I agree with what you've said. Not so much about Octopath being more immersive, mainly because I haven't really seen much on it, but your criticisms of GOW are pretty accurate in my eyes. Between the level design, the enemy design, the story,....eh, it's an ok game. The presentation is what they hung everything on, and for me that's not enough. They did put a surprising amount of effort into the combat, but it's just not the combat I wanted. Ok game, just not for me. And it's easy to miss.
What a stupidly subjective thing to argue. Immersion only means how well it sucks you into the game. Story is not needed if someone loves the gameplay. Gameplay is not needed if someone loves the story. Graphics are not needed if they love either the gameplay or the story. There has to be a driving factor to a game that compels a person to want to continue to play it and both God of War and Octopath Traveler are just as immersive in their respective genres, but you can't objectively weigh one against the other.

So you're saying that I'm not batshit crazy like some users here seem to think when I say GoW doesn't look like an 11/10 game? :P
Thanks for the input man. Glad to hear this from someone who's actually played it. Sony's games usually have really good presentation, and that takes them far (people like shiny things), but people who've played lots of games for lots of years often wants something deeper than what they offer. Not hard at all to understand for me or you, very hard to understand for some others, it seems.

You could easily go with that as you have already made up your opinion about it. You can also just accept that others who have actually played the game have different opinion. That they do think you are batshit crazy lol. I mean yeah its a sony game. They got great artists and an expensive performance capture studio that there studios must use. Production quality up the wazzuu, ND cinematic story telling and all that usual shit. Its easy to stop there and assume the game is nothing. GOW though combines all that with great gamplay and good design, different and with alot more depth than its tired past hack and slash game. Crafted by devs who seem to be motivated by classic metroidvania games and think that Nioh should be the game of the century. Its not like those games but the motivation in design is clear.
Its not a tradition jrpg game yet is it even an rpg game, I have no idea why the comparison with this game. My guess which goes to your feelings perhaps is, this is about how GOW is not a video game type a thing. System waring thing. As a fan of rpg games not alot of things are as immersive as rpg systems and role playing in general. Especially with the way PO is celebrating the classic and coming from the interesting Bravely Default formula. Maybe the question should be which genre of games are more immersive cause GOW is fucking good at that. Personaly I liked the immersive setting and "Give me god of war mode" combination that GOW offers. They went and tweaked its most difficult mode with actual different enemy behaviour and abilities. The result is pure immersion and a celebration of the design of the game.

All I'm saying is that I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like the game. I'm not in any way saying the game is bad. This is the 3rd time I try to explain that. I might change my quite negative opinion about the game if I play it, but I highly doubt it. Where exactly do I not accept that people have different opinions? And have you guys accepted my opinions?
I mean yeah its a sony game. They got great artists and an expensive performance capture studio that there studios must use. Production quality up the wazzuu, ND cinematic story telling and all that usual shit. Its easy to stop there and assume the game is nothing.
I don't assume much, though. I check things up. I get the gist of how the gameplay is by watching youtube and hearing from people. And when a studio puts that much time and money into presentation, the other aspects of the game suffering is natural. And common.
GOW though combines all that with great gamplay and good design. Its different and with alot more depth than its tired past hack and slash game. Its crafted by devs who are motivated by classic metroidvania games and think that Nioh should be the game of the century. Its not like those games but the motivation in design is clear.
That's cool and all. I've played Nioh (not completed it yet), and I'd say it's not even close to being the game of the century. I find Nioh to be a pretty cool game and I definitely want to play it more than I want to play GoW. I accept their and your opinion though. I promise.
@cainetao11: And yet "jrpg weab shyte" like Pokemon is the highest-grossing media franchise of all time, beating the likes of even Marvel and Star Wars by a wide margin. But sure, whatever makes you happy.
But you got to agree Pokemon is shit. There are way better franchises in Japan, don't know why Pokemon sells so much. Just like I never understand why Star Wars sells so much.

Still the story and storyline was more cohesive in the original games. This new story makes no sense at all, how and why did Kratos changed suddenly or why is he suddenly doing all that to honor the wish of his late wife. Why do we care? It's a complete 180 from previous games without explaining anyting at all while still *forcing* he's the same person.

But its consoles where most of the money is made.
And if "gameplay" alone matters than PES would not be clobbered by FIFA overall. There are reasons why FIFA is beating PES.
@texasgoldrush:
For now, yes. But industry trends would point to mobiles likely becoming a bigger source of revenue in future.
FIFA is the official tie-in license, a household name, with casual brand recognition, the COD of sports games. It's unrealistic to expect PES, a cult franchise targeting hardcore fans, to match its sales. Gameplay matters more to hardcore fans. But brand recognition matters more to casuals.
@Litchie:
You made assumptions about a game you haven't played. You came off as being adamant about them, I think that is what was crazy on your initial post. It wasn't really about not understanding weather your saying the game is bad or not. To me your assumptions were not lining up to my experience for GOW as someone who played the game. Felt I should point out where I feel the game is coming from and what it has especially when it comes to the context of the thread. That it has good gameplay it is well designed. Its not all about presentation as you implied. Not direct quoting you but your initial post came off as GOW all presentation with no need for good gameplay. Your assumptions described a supposedly typical sony game or more accurately a ND game really. These other studios may borrow story telling and performance capture stuff but tend to pack more in gameplay design to be fair to them. GOW is such a game that managed to grab a bit more than the usual great story great presentation is all i need folks. Nioh is what the lead combat designer thinks. I thought i should put it out there to show hey these people have that kinda of motivations cause I think Nioh is superb and has the best combat out there.
