Don't get me wrong, I'm very exicted for the PS4 and maybe the Xbox One once the price drops, but those systems don't really offer anything knew other than improved graphics.

The True Next Gen starts when Oculus Rift is released.  I believe it will change gaming and immerse us to another level not really seen or experienced before.

You'll be part of the game not just looking at your TV screen pressing some buttons.

 Do you guys agree?

It's going to be a great experience, I'll look into getting one down the road once they're affordable and most games support them, I'm sure it's a hell of a lot more entertaining than a 3d tv.

nope, not being able to look away from the game would be maddening for me. Cant see my keyboard, cant see my beer... having to remove a headset everytime i want to do one of those things would drive me crazy.

Like all gimmicks im sure the rift will be fun in small doses, but its definitely not something i would use on a regular basis.

Hipsters will attempt to claim it's a gimmick for the fact it's a new and updated idea done right.

Practically everyone who has tried it has said it's "da bomb". Even Gaben and John Tarmack.

practically everyone who has tried it has only done so in small doses, all gimmicks are fun in small doses. The question is if people are gonna want that thing strapped to their face for hours at a time, and im guessing not.

I agree. But they're extremely slow in producing it and turning it into an actual product.

I'm still waiting for my dev kit since Jan. How long will it take them to ship a final consumer version?

Unfortunately, people are already trying to dismiss its potential. If the device delivers on its goals, it will provide some innovative gaming experiences. That is something that any gamer, whether you prefer xbox, PS, or PC, should be excited about.

id_mew

But without a ps4 or a pc or a system to run on the rift is just an expensive paperweight because it doesnt actually do anything on its own. It has to be plugged into a device.

And yes it is cool but it isnt nextgen anymore than 3d is "next gen". The rift does look mighty cool but all it basically is, is just another way to view a game is all. Just standard definition went to HD, then HD went to 3d and now we have the rift, just another way of viewing the game. It doesnt actually do anything to improve a game, or create a new way to play games.

Besides, I dont want to move my head around to look around in a game. I also dont want to wear a helment to play a game either. Its a cool gimmick, but it goes on the drawer with the power glove, 3d effects, the kinect and uforce as another gimmick that is a good idea on paper.

Technically it would work, but it would be impratical. People like to game for hours. Imagine wearing this thing for that long.

You make some good points but I disagree on it doesn't do anything to improve a game.  playing a horror game with a regular tv vs using the Oculus Rift will dramstically improve the game, the game will become more immersive and you'll be part of the game, same think for a racing game. I think if developers make games with the Oculus in mind, the game could be changed to take advantage of the technology.

ok I just got mine a week ago and it is amazing to play with but it has a HUGE adjustment period so far it makes me a little sick but in a sensory overload kind of way. I can't ever make it to the recommended 10min and I haven't have the time to adjust to it yet but when I can play it amazing. Skyrim is a better game with it.. Feel free to ask any questions I will do my best to answer

Good point. Depending on the weight and comfort of the device, it could be annoying for long periods of gaming. I don't remember reading anybody talk about how the device feels.

I doubt that it will bother me. I made a head strap for my Virtual Boy, and that thing was heavy as hell. It would literally dig into my face, but I would still play it for hours...

I definately agree, and from what i could gather it's having tremendous success from critics and the crowd alike.

I personally favor immersion ALOT, and i believe if one of the next gen consoles manages to get their games being produced with rift compatibility (engine support + 60 fps) they will get a great advantage.

Otherwise i might invest a bit more in the pc first and wait a bit before purchasing a next gen console :).

For now all we can do is wait for a rift HD version...

OR is awesome tech, but I don't think it will come close to replacing the console/PC and monitor/screen set up. It's an enthusiast product that only a small population will purchase and even smaller use on a daily basis. I want it, but I don't think I'm going to come home from a full work day and pop on the OR headset to relax.

If it's well-implemented and supported, I'll probably drop a dime on it.  It looks like it'd work great with Star Citizen.
