How am I being hypocritical? When did I say reviewers aren't entitled to their opinion?
I have always championed the stance that all of this is subjective to individual tastes. All entertainment. Most who know me for the past 12 years posting know this about me.
Saying nostalgia plays a part is just saying our pasts play a part in formulating our opinions. How is this hypocritical to the above?
I have not played Odessy but there was a really good video on YouTube explaing why it's over rated and the guy made a lot of sense.
It does seem to be filled with over excessive moons that serve no purpose other then making the game seem larger and more content filled then it actually is.
It's the same with BoTW, they've added shrines just for the sake of adding them and it makes the game seem larger then it actually is.
It would be equivalent to Guerrilla Games filling Horizon: ZD with unnecessary cauldrons to make it artificially larger then it is.
It’s good, but the galaxy series is much better.
^^^ This. Galaxy is where Mario peaked. Such an innovative series of games. Both games are Nintendo's swan songs for Mario like Breath of the Wild is for Zelda. Odyssey seems like a step back is every way.
Try going for 800+ moons and the greatness of the game shines.
I assume that you think collecting 25000 orbs in Crackdown is "fun". If you haven't played it, do it. Seems like it would be the game of your dreams.
Loved Odyssey. I'd put it right under the Galaxy games as Mario at his best.
Never understood the nostalgia argument. History with a game franchise might make you eager to try it, but that also comes with higher expectations that are harder to meet, IMO.
Nostalgia wasn't enough to get me to keep playing Sunshine past the first handful of shines or Skyward Sword past the first dungeon. The latter might be the best example from my personal experience on how nostalgia doesn't make a new game more enjoyable. Zelda is my favorite series of all time, but that game was a slog.

Perhaps you should actually try playing these games first before saying they are "artificially" enlarged.
The vast majority of shrines and moons offer unique gameplay moments.

Played BoTW, not played Odyessy.........
And you didn't address my statements...... They can offer what they like, they're still overly excessive and inflated.
All of this arguing, but the fact that the OP asserts the levels don't have good replay value alone demonstrates they barely know anything about the game. It's probably one of the defining features of this title and what makes it so clever; the game is basically built around the premise of exploring new, harder challenges in the levels that open up after the by-the-books first pass through

And totally optional for the most part.
I just don't understand how someone can dismiss unique gameplay moments as "excessive".
You don't like playing games?

You don't like playing games?
Pounding random parts of the floor or breaking rocks for a moon in Odyssey is unique gameplay?
Man you have low expectations.
And optional or not, my point still stands.
Nostalgia goes a long way. Nintendo do put a lot of effort into their main franchises but their is an air of inevitability that they get over inflated scores. People are only honest about them when the next game comes out.
@DocSanchez: people keep saying about this Nintendo factor that there games get inflated scores for whatever reason. But there is no actual evidence for this other than forum waffle.
Agreed game is overrated. I liked it, it's a good game like all mainline Mario games, but as far as the series goes it was pretty underwhelming.
I was pretty surprised when it got so many 10s from publications.

Evidence is staring right in the face...
For example, can you explain why BoTW's poor frame rate and shoddy performance was not highlighted in reviews.
Can you explain what would of happened if Halo, Gear, Uncharted or even Horizon had launched with such low performance?
There's many instances of issues with Nintendo games that have gone by without so much as a whisper when other games with similar problems have been pulled up on.
@scatteh316: That’s not evidence though, that’s still just conjecture. The performance issue obviously didn’t detract from the game enough for it to be a real issue, just like with Bloodborne.
So do you think this is like some unspoken conspiracy that all game reviewer have to agree to before reviewing game or maybe it’s in the terms and conditions of employment at gaming websites.
Twaddle in my opinion.

Rated a 10 on GS.... average user score of 8.5 with many people listing the same problems and not understanding why it got a 10 and also listing the same issues that were completely absent in the review.
None existent story, boring combat, weapons that break too easily, too easy.......the list goes on.
Horizon on the other hand scored a 9 on GS and has an average user score of 9.1 with most people picking up on the same issues that the GS review did.
@scatteh316: Ah yeah, but those high HZD user reviews are due to playstation fans inflating there score because they are very nostalgic towards playstation so you can’t take them seriously.

Maybe so.... but so are the Nintendo boys.......
1. Never use the internet to gauge reality. 2. Never use the internet to gauge reality.
The internet said Battlefront 2 sucked and they wouldn't buy it.
4 million sold.
The internet said they hate Transformers.
Billions made later.
The internet hated Twilight.
Billions made later.
3. Never use the internet to gauge reality. Plenty of people enjoy a thing without going online to circle jerk about it.
@boycie: the evidence I have is the reactions of all the gamers and how they change during the games release and years later. There is no way Skyward Sword is a great game. It was dated on release, clumsy, and people are only now honest about it. Metacritic 93 off the zelda name alone.
@davillain-: That's the first time I've ever heard anyone say Mario 64 is over-rated.
Mario 64 can't be overrated. It was the first 3D platforming game that was actually done right, wasn't it?
In fact, it's still better than almost every 3D platformer released today.
@DocSanchez: None of that is unique to Nintendo though. People opinions of games from many developers change over time. It’s a bit of a leap to go from that to call it it evidence of a global Nintendo review conspiracy.

"Evidence"
Are you collecting this data and quantifying it? Correlating it with previous years opinions and reviews?
There is such a thing as a vocal minority. People who tend to enjoy a thing don't always run around talking about it. While those who hate a thing are more likely to do so. One doesn't mean the other does not exist. I adore MGS4 but I don't go around talking about it. Does that mean that MGS4 now sucks or that those that love it don't exist?
I haven't liked what I played of it as much as I liked 3D World. It's still a very good game, though.
@luxuryheart: Then why doesn’t Sonic get the same treatment?
Sonic is outdated. Sonic was a breath of fresh air in the 90s, and he seemed so cool compared to Mario. It makes sense because Sega's brand was to be the cool and mature console compared to Nintendo's kiddy console. However, it's the very thing that screwed him over. Not everyone could play Sonic compared to Mario. Mario was easier and he isn't outdated. Imagine if Nintendo had made Mario too cool for school. Sure it would have made him more mature, but imagine it now. Sonic just didn't age well because he's tied to the 90s.
@themajormayor: of course they are. Somebody somewhere will consider a review score higher than they think it should be for every game.
Which is why the term overrated is so fucking pointless.
@Bread_or_Decide: christ you are boring. This isnt a fucking courtroom son. I dont need statistics and correlation. I have my opinion based on what I have sen. Believe it or do not - I will still sleep at night!

What you have "sen" doesn't prove anything. So stop using it as evidence.
@Bread_or_Decide: Good luck sticking to that logic in future mate.
Good luck using evidence and logic and reason? I'm pretty sure that's a good thing.
@Bread_or_Decide: What's not a good thing though is being an arrogant, patronising knob head. Try not doing that.

No, just because some idiots try to determine the quality of a past release based on current standards doesn't mean that every game is "overrated". Your logic implies that all ratings are pointless because standards change. Some opinions are more valid than others. Your position is relativist tripe.

Yeah I haven't played Crackdown, have no idea what that games about. I guess most people enjoy the collectable nature of Mario Odyssey otherwise it wouldn't have the scores it got, I respect your opinion though if you don't like that, fair enough and good critic.
The Galaxy games were, although great, the most overrated in my opinion. The linearity of those games rather threw me off after enjoying the sandbox structure of 64 and Sunshine.
I think the biggest problem going against Odyssey was it was not the game a lot of people anticipated, which I don't think is entirely Odyssey's fault. After the success of Breath of the Wild, I think that really put our expectations for Odyssey under different light than what it ended up being.
With BotW, a lot of people expected an expansive game as large a scope as Zelda was. Odyssey ended up being way smaller and compact. Both games have impressive scale but in different ways. BotW was outwardly expansive whereas Odyssey was more inward and meticulous on detail within smaller space.
I think BotW and Odyssey were like two sides to the same coin, but most people expected Odyssey to be on the same side as BotW, and that threw some people off, including the ones that ended up loving it anyways.
i think overhyped rather than overrated. the hype got a bit crazy around launch.
i think some got the wrong idea on the format of the game also: i know i thought it was going to be in the structure of sunshine and 64 (hub world leading to other places). i got a little deflated when i found out it wasnt.
but it wasnt a deal breaker. the game is still brilliant.the structure is ideal for both home and portable play. the levels are great overall. ace soundtrack. better character handling, looks lovely and is a bit insane at times (though nothing has quite managed to capture the madness of mario 3).
top 3 of mario games? no. but it is competing with the likes of the galaxy games. its a big step up from the disappointing mario 3d world and is certainly better than sunshine.
i would have no reservation recommending it. its just one of the games you get if you are getting a switch.
