Neither gamespot's, your own or any other review can nullify the validity of my opinion on this game series, because no one is presenting any counter-arguments to my complaints. Instead, MGS fans are praising the very issues that are holding this series back. (I'm talking about the MGS series in general, not just MGS4) For example, the characters in MGS are being named as some of the best in gaming, but their personal traits and abilities have no explanation or relevance. Ocelot, for example, really likes spinning his pistols and we have to watch him do this for minutes in several cutscenes. Why??? What's the point? It has no place in the story or the setting of the game. And it doesn't stop at Ocelot, we have this solider who has control of bees, and a general who can shoot electricity, all for no reason and without explanation.
Go ahead, convince me that these issues are in fact not issues, but good things.

dude...they are bosses. Why is the Hydra in GoW pissed off and trying to kill people? Why is there a sex scene in ME? Its not like its needed. Why are ken and ryu able to release energy from their hands? Why can harry potter do magic? ITS FICTION! Not everything has to be realistic. As for the MGS series in general, I dont see how that is relavent in a thread about MGS4. And for your information, MGS4 really tried to ground everything down a little more with explanation of how so many things were possible due to nano-machines (Pyscho Mantis/B&B Mantis being able to control and read peoples minds due to nanmachines, and Fortunes abilities being suuplied by an electromagnetic field created by nanomachines).
Why does ocelot spin his guns in MGS3? Its meant to show the difference in personality between Ocelot and Naked Snake. Both Ocelot and Snake are sons of the boss (Ocelot being the genetic son, and Snake being the emotional son) and this is shown furthur more by they child like sibling rivalry all throughout MGS3. Ocelots gun play is in stark contrast to snakes calculated and purposeful movements. Its supposed to show Ocelots immature, and show-offish nature, while on the other hand Snake only does whats necessary (like when he etches out his gun grip so his knife will fit better). This shows the great contrast between them. Another scene where this is prevalent is when Snake tells Ocelot that he would be better off with a revolver with his shooting **** This furthers the image of them as "brothers" and helps show Snake's experience over Ocelots obvious talent, yet lack of experience.
As for the boss battles, each boss has his own special ability that goes with their name, and each of their names is a depiction of War, sort of like how the 4 horsemen's names depict the apocalypse. In MGS4 we have:
The End - Depicts the end of life in war. His ability is his extended life in a "death" like state.
The Pain - Depicts all the pain and suffering of war. His ability is a colony of hornets that live within him, giving him excrutiating pain.
The Sorrow - Depicts the sorrow that war brings. his ability brings back all the dead a soldier has ever killed and they manifest and tear at the soldier's soul.
The Fear - Depicts the fear of people in wars. His ability is his super strength and agility and his amazing camouflage. His abilities (IMO) are to show the fear one feels when facing an enemy they cant see and is clearly superior..sorta like facing off against the Predator.
The Fury - Depicts the sensless anger of war and he wields a flamethrower that can produce raging torrents of flame. I dunno, but I have always associated wild and forceful fire with fury and anger.
The Joy - Depicts he love of battle. The Boss is a born soldier and she depicts the "battle high" that sum soldiers get in war. Also I believe this is a reference to her enchanting charisma. Everyone who has ever known or fought beside her gets a sort of battle high, a "joy" by just being around her.
