[QUOTE="Dualshockin"][QUOTE="CaseyWegner"]you've never gotten up to use the bathroom, answer the phone, answer the door, eat, blow your nose, etc. while playing a game? you play through mgs games all in one sitting?DireToad
I have indeed done so(Bathroom),but the -Pause- function provides a different situation than changing discs. The feeling is when you change a disc, you are painfully reminded that you are bounded by console and software limitations. It's like reading Harry Potter and you find out a page is torn. You are reminded that it is in fact only a book, and this eliminates a large part of the immersion, epic, and fantasy world presented by the book.

So what about putting the controller down while Psycho Mantis makes it vibrate... Or when you had to find Meryl's codec frequency on the back of the actual game case...

Does that take you away from the game experience?

That adds to the game experience as it is a part of the actual content. Changing a disc isn't,Snake doesn't look at you and go "Open the gamecase, remove and Insert disc B to proceed". As I have said before, changing a disc is a hardware limitation that can be avoided in 2007.

[QUOTE="Dualshockin"][QUOTE="smokeydabear076"]The point in which you have to switch a disk is normally an appropriate one, they don't just make you switch the disk when your in the middle of a heated gun fight.Dreams-Visions

But it still is a problem if it can be avoided. Why should I open a door only to be presented with "Remove disc(a) from the disc tray and insert disc(b) to continue" ?

man you've spent the better part of the evening pissing and moaning about the horrors of swapping discs. can't you accept that if disc swapping did become necessary, Kijoma would ensure that it doesn't in any way hinder the gameplay experience? Can't you just be objective enough to realize that? Save your evening and be rational.

Meh it wouldn't bother me as much and you would definitely not see me complain once the game is in my hands, one way or the other... But I somewhat have to agree with him. Specially if this one is as short as the others... Wich it might not be even on a second play through.

But I've done this many times already in gaming and even PS fans would do well in remember the PS1 in this particular case.

Like someone said before its just like an extended loading screen. If this little incident is enough to cause a drastic blow to the enjoyment you get from a game then the game really is not that good to begin with.

For me it is,as when I decide to play through a game I want to experience it how the developers wanted me to experience it. Kojima isn't sitting somewhere going "Ok,so after a gamer goes to the bathroom,he comes back, then unpauses, walks through. . ." etc.

you're telling me that the ability to freeze time so you can get up and take a whiz doesn't ruin the illusion but changing a disc does?

Give it up Casey, you cant reason with him

Well if the developers put the disk switching area in a certain location then that is how they want you to experience it, so you are in fact playing the game the way they wanted you to play it.

From my point it is like this: Why should I have to change game discs multiple times in 2007 just to get through the said game? I'm waiting for the MS press conference, hence why not have a debate to pass time.

Why should you care how others are going to experience the game? Especially since they could care less about a minor inconvenience such as multiple disks? Since all you have been talking about is how you are going to experience the game, you should know that it will probably be on one disk for the PS3 which is the platform you intend to get the game for is it not?

seriously his personally feeling towards swapping disc has nothing to do with game possible going multi-plat. just cause if it comes out for another console besides the ps3 and uses multiple disc why is it a bad thing when it looks like he will get the ps3 version.

He, like the rest of us, probably thought it was so awesome, like getting extra content or an expansion pack.

I care because at the end of the day,we are all gamers. And if we ignore problems and limitations present in our gaming consoles, then we are not doing ourselves nor the gaming industry justice. I'm still on the fence on whether or not to buy MGS4.

It sounds like this is recent news meaning the problem is.... This wont be announced for a long time and if it does happen it'll most likely be a timed exclusive. It sounds like they are still thinking about it. Sony would be stupid not to throw money there way. The way the interview sounded it seems like they would prefer to keep it on PS3 which they said so most likely it's just a timed exclusive... To bad they actually lost money putting MGS2 on the Xbox what Konami doesnt understand is no one wants Metal Gear on Xbox because lemmings dont really care about it they are fine with Halo and the other titles already on 360. If you got a 360 you didnt get it for metal gear you got it for splinter cell.

I knew it was a system limitation, thus I had to bear it and carry on. When I heard the next one will be on the next Playstation,I knew that the limitation had a chance of finally going away.

Well hate to burst your bubble, but the majority of gamers don't care about this "limitation" to the extent that you do and I think that any true MGS fan would not think that this product is of lesser quality if it did have two or more disks.

I will only be happy if the 360 development doesn't interfere with the PS3 development. multiplats often mean catering to the lowest common denominator, and we don't want to see MGS4 "dumbed down" for anyone. I hope they make it to the PS3's strenghts...then make it to the 360's strenghts.

if they make it at all for the 360, that is.

So what makes X360 the "lowest common denominator"? :|

They probbly knew from the get go that they'd have to make it multiple disks. I highly doubt they gave it the slightest concern because at the time swapping disks was sort of a prestige thing, like with FF VII. The consumer knew they were getting a large, lenghty game. The same still holds true for the most part.

You know what else interrupts the game, and reminds you that you're dealing with game hardware? Turning the game off, and then starting again.

Maybe it was better in the arcades, when we didn't have saves, and had to finish our games in one sitting. Nothing to break the immersion then...

Maybe so,but I still stand by my statement, disc swapping in 2007 for any system/game is simply unacceptable as it can/could've been avoided with better hardware.

Keep wishing. The PS3 isn't doomed just because MGS is ported to the 360. We still get MGS4 and don't forget about our 1st and 2nd party games. Coughs GOW 3

I say the same about lack of rumble in controllers, and lack of damage in sim racers, in 2007 - simply unacceptable :)

Absolutely, it obliterates the immersion factor.

[QUOTE="Dualshockin"][QUOTE="Spartan070"][QUOTE="Dualshockin"] So you're saying Kojima and his team wants you to swap the disc to continue playing? Alrighty then.Spartan070

Umm, yes. To progess further in the game, just like they did with the first MGS.

So you're saying Kojima and his team didn't try to find a way around swapping discs? Claiming that devs intentionally want you to swap a disc to proceed with their game is quite amusing, considering the amount of time they spend on trying to avoid such a problem.

They probbly knew from the get go that they'd have to make it multiple disks. I highly doubt they gave it the slightest concern because at the time swapping disks was sort of a prestige thing, like with FF VII. The consumer knew they were getting a large, lenghty game. The same still holds true for the most part.

Yeah, whenever I purchased a game that had more then one disk I was like man... this is going to be a long game and for the part those games turned out fantastic. I never for one second thought of it as a hardware limitation.

[QUOTE="Dualshockin"][QUOTE="smokeydabear076"]Well hate to burst your bubble, but the majority of gamers don't care about this "limitation" to the extent that you do and I think that any true MGS fan would not think that this product is of lesser quality if it did have two or more disks.AdobeArtist

Maybe so,but I still stand by my statement, disc swapping in 2007 for any system/game is simply unacceptable as it can/could've been avoided with better hardware.

I say the same about lack of rumble in controllers, and lack of damage in sim racers, in 2007 - simply unacceptable :)

Depends on how you look at it,rumble was present 10 years ago,i've been using it since it got introduced(Mind you,the rumble pack was no easy add-on)so I can honestly say that I don't miss it unless a new technology of rumble, that completely revolutionizes rumble, comes out(I hear Immersion are already creating such a thing). Damage modelling is a choice of devs,if they feel it will add to the immersion then it will be there,if not,it won't.I'd much rather play with a photo realistic car than hit a wall at 100MPH and leave with only a decal tear. Now let's get back on topic.

[QUOTE="smokeydabear076"]If this becomes reality then I will be happy.AdobeArtist

You have to switch the disks at one or two points in the game!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. My heart... just *gasp gasp* ca-can't take it any more... ohhh when will *coughcough* the agony eeeeeend?

You better start going to the gym! In my experience switching a disk is like a HIT (High Intensity Training) workout. It requires every ounce of mental and physical power you can muster and after you have completed it, your energy is completely depleted.

Exactly, they knew that immersion through game fluidity would be a problem due to a systems limitations. This in turn creates the problem for us when prompted to change discs. I bought FF12 a while ago,and it was on 1 disc.I knew it was a lengthy and large game, that would satisfy and immerse me in the world of Ivalice. It delivered.I knew what I was getting, and got it. Now why should I buy a game (this generation) that comes with 4 gameplay discs just to achieve a lower sense of satisfaction and immersion?

The PS2 did so well b/c it was an affordable system with a good mix of kid oriented as well as adult oriented games. NOT because of FF or MGS. While they sell really good, neither sell near enough to explain the fact that the PS2 sold 120 million units worldwide.

The PS2 did so well because it had a huge library that overshadowed the other consoles.

It will, however, still be a pretty big blow to Sony in terms of reputation and killing a lot of Sony's hype.

Honestly Dualshokin, you keep mentioning immersion. 10 seconds out of a playthrough experience that lasts 20+ hours IN NO WAY detracts from any kind of immersion, especially with a cleverly placed "switch spot." Your entire "teh lozt immersionz!1!!1" arguement is futile, like resisting the Borg.

[QUOTE="smokeydabear076"][QUOTE="Spartan070"]No one had a problem switching disks in the original MGS...Dualshockin
I wonder how dualshockin felt about disk switching back when he played that game.

I knew it was a system limitation, thus I had to bear it and carry on. When I heard the next one will be on the next Playstation,I knew that the limitation had a chance of finally going away.

You make it seem like such an oppressive burden. Look, you can go on and on about "limitations", but so what? Yes, there are limitations. There are limitations to everything; technology, freedoms, our very lives. Life is limited, and so are the things within it, so just accept it. Now the choice boils down to this: Option A: a larger, longer, more epic game, but you have to swap discs, or Option B: a shorter, smaller, less epic game all on one disc. Me? Heathenistic as it may seem to you, I choose Option A.

Well the Federation always comes out on top when they face the Borg.:P (I know that it is off topic, but it needed to be addressed) Anyway multiple disks or not, I am sure that MGS4 will be a fantastic experience on the Xbox 360 if the rumours are true.

The question is not IF but WHEN will MGS4 release for the 360. If Peter Moore shows off a tattoo of Kojima's face on his chest where his heart is located at MS press conference tonight, there's no more reason to watch Sony's and Nintendo's.

saying that swapping disks ruins immersion is such a weak argument and you know it dual, lol. Im sure most sane people will have no problem with having to swap a few disks to enjoy a lenghty game. Gamers have done it for a long time and theres no reason we still cant. Keep sprouting your sony fanboy junk if it makes you feel better.

I choose option A but without the disc swapping. The limitations could've been avoided, but they didn't take the necessary time and measures to do so.Thus,I am disappointed that in 2007 we gamers still have to go through disc swapping.
