Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo Flaunt Favorite Facts From NPD

October's NPD results, just released yesterday, showed encouraging growth for the industry, in a month that analysts and execs believed would be a litmus test for the games biz in a forbidding economy. Software sales growth in particular handily beat estimates at about 35 percent -- but, as is customary, it's the big three hardware manufacturers who've each found their own reasons to celebrate.

Sony: No Victory, But Big Growth

It's Sony who perhaps faces the stiffest barriers to gloating; its PlayStation 3 sold just 190,000 units, coming in fourth among all current platforms, topped by its own PSP and within sight of the last-gen PlayStation 2, widely considered to be declining, at 136,000 units.

But while it may be well behind the Xbox 360, there are signs the PS3 is gaining impressive momentum, says Sony, noting that PS3 sales grew 54 percent year over year, even compared to a month in which the console received a price cut. And according to the company, PS3 software sales have doubled year over year.

"With the holiday shopping season officially kicking off in November, strong software sales are expected to continue with ongoing momentum on LittleBigPlanet and the launch of Resistance 2," said the company in a statement.

Sony also highlighted 166 percent growth in the PlayStation Network's user registration, revealing that the total number of PSN registrations is up to 14 million.

Overall, Sony says, it took in $131 million in hardware revenue in October, up 19 percent, while first-party software revenue was $209 million, up 23 percent.

Microsoft: Strong Software

Even though Microsoft cut hardware prices in October, often gloating that its Arcade SKU's "sweet spot" $199 Arcade pricing put it below that of the Wii, both of Nintendo's platforms beat the Xbox 360.

At 371,000 units, Microsoft didn't even come close to the dominating Wii, and was beaten by the DS to the tune of over 100,000 units -- even while analysts have claimed demand for Nintendo's handheld is beginning to plateau.

And although the company boldly predicted it would trump the PS3 by a ratio of 2:1, it just missed by 9,000 units. While that's close, 'nearly' does not a goal fulfillment make. So with hardware sales that, while impressive, didn't quite walk Microsoft's big talk, the company sensibly elected to focus on its software strengths.

It's notable that Fable II, despite being exclusive to Xbox 360, topped software sales by a wide margin, well above multiplatform software whose marketing campaigns were as visible. The game has sold 1.5 million units globally since launch, and Microsoft calls it the fastest-selling RPG on Xbox 360.

The company's now claiming an 8:1 attach rate for software, spending on which reached $244 million during October. Specifically, the company highlighted its strong relationship with third-party publishers, who sold $171 million on the Xbox 360, or 57 percent share.

Nintendo: Wide Appeal Is Still On Top

"Wider appeal can also translate to longer appeal and maybe even to better appeal," said Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime at the BMO Capital Markets event -- right before the NPD results arrived to bear his statement out.

At around 803,000 units sold, the Wii was far and away the best-selling hardware on the month as, according to analysts, supply constraints loosened a little. With the DS at 491,000, Nintendo claimed the top two hardware spots for the month.

And while the company had no new October titles chart in the software top 10, it apparently did not need them. Wii Fit's sales for the month came in second behind Microsoft's Fable 2, and, as consumer blog MTV Multiplayer noticed, Activision's Guitar Hero: World Toursold better on Wii than on any other platform even without charting.

Mario Kart Wii -- and Wii Play, a launch title -- continued to make the top ten as well, supporting Fils-Aime's assertion that broad-appeal titles that "question the very definition of a video game" will show consistent month-to-month sales endurance, rather than the early spike and rapid drop-off seen by more traditional core market titles.

"Nintendo provides consumers with the best value not only among video games, but also among most entertainment options," Nintendo sales and marketing EVP Cammie Dunaway said.

"Nintendo also provides an incomparable range of experiences that everyone can enjoy, whether you've been playing for years or are just getting into video games."

EDIT and to butteater, how exactly did the PS3 "beat the crap out of everyone" with its games? 360/pc with a much better version of Fallout, Gears, Fable, etc as with every holiday period its finding time to play the all the games!

If I had a PS3 LBP would be at the top of my list as well. I agree that PS3 owners need wake up and make a LBP purchase. While PS3 owners are up they should also make a BioShock purchase.

Danm the wii almost sold 1 million in a month!

360 seems to be well.

PS3 sales are dissapointing, not too far off PS2.

Most people I know think that LBP is a kiddies game. Shame that as it really looks like a great game. (I haven't played it yet)

I own all 3 consoles and rarely play my PS3. If not for blu-ray movies, my PS3 would almost never get turned on.

The Xbox360 get the vast majority of my gaming time. :D

The only thing the PS3 has over the 360 and Wii is one AAAAE. The 360 has 5 AAAE, and the Wii has 4 AAAE. The PS3 has 2. For AAE games the 360 has 12, The Wii has 7 and the PS3 has 4. That is 17 AAE+ games for the 360, 11 AAE+ games for the Wii, and 7 AAE+ games for the PS3. Unless 'Quality' games are over AAA, the PS3 isn't beating the crap out of the 360 and Wii in quality games.

I'm glad it's getting clearer and clearer what HD console is the leader and the best part is that it's the cheapest console.

They aren't going to drop the price this year. They won't do that until March or Apr 2009. I could be wrong. Sony may be bold and drop the price of the PS3 on Black Friday to $350, but then they would watch people start selling their stocks, because there's no doubt Sony would have a large fiscal loss if they did. They are still losing money now and even their Electronic division has been doing poorly this year. A lot of it is because of the economy, but there has been better electronics from other companies competing against Sony. Blu-Ray has not taken off as quickly as Sony would have liked. Many people are still sticking with DVD's because they are cheaper and people don't want to convert to Blu-Ray. 

Microsoft was smart to release their system early. There only real mistake was not doing a better job with the Q/A on their system. If their system was more reliable the first year they would have done better. Their shortage also killed them for the 1st year. Otherwise they would be another 1-2 million higher in hardware sales right now. Sony is going to have a hard time competition with the XBox 360 and Wii now, because both system will always be lower in price then the PS3. Even if Sony did drop the price of the PS3 this year, say on Black Friday; they will only drop it $50 which will still be higher then the Xbox 360 and Wii. On top of that, they will lose even more millions, so it wouldn't be a smart move at all. The only thing even keeping Sony in the race is the popularity of the PS3 in the U.K. If it wasn't for the U.K., the PS3 would be done right now.  People saying that 2008 was the year of the PS3, was wrong. 

I'm suprised Little Big Planet isn't selling better, must have horrible advertisement. Sony need to start showing what the've got a bit more, and do it well. Sony has allways had horrible advertising so mabye:

1. They need a significant price drop.

2. They need to make a big deal about it.

They really need to think about improving their advertising alot over the next year or so. They allready have the games and the solid hardware, now start selling it properly.

It's pretty obvious that RROD killed MS's chances at dominating the Wii in NA. I mean come on, man. For the same price you can get a real gaming console yet people still choose the wii.

That would be 500,000 already , then is still has 2 more months (November and December-holiday months) for NA and December for PAL region ..... and that is just this year. People made the same big stink about Heavenly Sword (139k) , Ratchet and Clank (74k), and Uncharted (117k) last year because of the opening NPDs like the sky was falling and we all know how that tuned out.

It should be fine.

One of the few games that have caught my interest on that system is SSBM...but that alone isn't convincing enough for me to warrant a purchase. 

Will target a new PC and perhaps a 360 later down the road. A PS3 is currently a simple "don't know yet"...it has a batch of games that I'd love to play (currently only MGS 4, although I'm not particularly fond of the series,..but in the future we have KZ2, GOW3, White Knight Story, Heavy Rain and others) , but that price tag simply makes my wallet self-ignite.

One of the few games that have caught my interest on that system is SSBM...but that alone isn't convincing enough for me to warrant a purchase.

I actually owned one but I got rid of it. There's about ten or so games out for it now that are great (especially galaxy) but there's a bunch of stuff I want for it next year including the gamecube rereleases. 

PS3 was much better than I expected but the multiplatform games are really bad, the controller sucks, it costs way too much (even though i got a good deal)

I can play multiplatform games on my PC so I only really need a system for exclusive. Ps3 has nothing except the games released this year and warhawk, and next year looks pathetic
