If you didn't catch IGN's live feed earlier tonight, I'll post a video as soon as it becomes available. But what I can recap from the hour they showed is some of the new combat features. One of Lara's melee attacks was to take a rock and bash scavengers head with it. This is to emphasise the primal survival and how someone with no formal combat training overcomes her threats. It also showed stealth kills with the bow, and if you have the element of surprise, Lara can sneak up behind a scavenger and use it to choke them out.
But the real meat of the demo was the exploration. After all the coverage of the cinematic set pieces, it was very refreshing to get a taste of the open and non linear traversal. Each hub is indeed spacious and they show how there are multiple paths to take, many which don't direct you to the main story objectives. Being as throrough as you can in exploring the environment yeilds rewards in the form of treasures such as ones that reveal a little of the island's history, which isn't comprised just of the ancient Japanese who first occupied it, but many cultures that also got ship wrecked there and made their own settlements.
And of course exploring around will lead to hidden tombs. They only passed one by here, as they're saving this for their Wed feature. One thing of interest to note is a "metroidvania" feature, where some areas of each hub space can only be accessed once Lara has aquired the right gear and skill set. So back tracking to re-explore the regions will come into play as well. They touch up very briefly on the skill upgrading you can access in the base camps, and will get into that deeper on the Thu feature.
The pick axe. Oh what a wonderful thing the pick axe is. Not only a melee weapon, buut also an exploration tool. The feed showed how Lara uses it to zipline along rope lines set up in some of the enemy bases (which they can use too) but the best thing is to scale rock surfaces. And it shows a lot of flexibility in where you can use this handy feature. I really can't wait to try that out for myself.
Which is all to say the feed offered a good sampling of Lara's traversal skills in climbing, jumping platforms, and using some structural objects like cloth banners/flags as swings. This very much IS a Tomb raider game, where the environments are still the heart of the puzzles, figuring out how to traverse the platforms and what skills are needed to reach different routes. Plus with improved platforming mechanics and animation. Speaking of puzzles, it also shows how fire is used to solve some of the obstacle puzzles, since they moved away from contrived mechanical constructs of ancient civilizations (gears and levers made of stone, weight blocks, etc...). But it can also be a combat asset.
I do gotta comment on the voice work. I can see how some of Lara's (or should I say Camilla's) vocalizations make sense to a certain degree, when it's Lara reacting to different situations (falling, struggling to reach a ledge, being shot at or a surprise attack from a wolf). But then there are other moments where she's talking for no other reason than to get into exposition about what her mission objective is like "I gotta find the medical pack, I just want the pack so I can get out of here". It's basically Lara talking to herself out loud whcih comes across as a bit... neurotic, lol. But I guess that's a minor quibble :P
just 4 questions.can you knock the enemy out and not kill them?
can you carry bodies and hide them?
can you sneak and choose not to kill anyone?
how is the combat? is it like batman or assasins creed?TheGuardian03
I didn't see any options for non-lethal kills. Stealth comprises of range shots with the bow and sneaking up on enemies. When sneaking Lara can use the bow to choke enemies, but can't tell if they pass out or are killed.
No mechanics for hiding bodies seen here.
Not sure if the option to sneak past enemies without take downs is available.
The combat is in some ways covr based TPS, being able to fire a gun or the bow from cover. The close quarters I guess would be closer to Batman (or even Splinter Cell for that matter) with the crouch posture of sneaking in for surprise attacks.
And thanks for that link campzor. I'll have to add it to the OP later.

Ok I take back anything negative I ever said about the game. That IGN playthrough looked stunning. Goes to show what happens when they actually show real gameplay instead of just the cinematic stuff.

Exactly this. Hopefully this puts to rest the "poor man's uncharted" or myth.

Also Womb Raider.

What's with you and Uncharted these days. The game series goes against everything you argued for in gaming. You had a huge change of heart as of late.

He's only supporting Uncharted as leverage against Tomb Raider :P:P
Wow, fantastic streaming from IGN. The game looks awesome! We finally start to see the game opening up. And the combat also looks very good, it's not just cover and shoot, Lara has a lot of mobility. Even they can design the map and the enemies to take full advantage from that the combat (the shielded one in the end is a good indication they are in the right path)might be top notch. A Tomb Raider game, with top notch combat!
Can't wait for it!

Superior PC version confirmed lolIGN stream was nice. I wasn't wowed by it, but it definitely looks pretty damn good. A few moments that I couldn't help but be nitpicky about was the flow of her ponytail and those guys getting caught on fire while that one guy right across from them just watched as if sh** wasn't totally hitting the fan(LOL!).
Still a little irked about the health regen(if true), and I really wish she would scavenge a freakin jacket. I'm freezing just looking at her...

You're not the only one who's brought this up. At the Eidos forums they're discussing why doesn't Lara take warmer clothing from scavengers she's taken down. In one trailer at E3, we see Lara shivering in the rain as she tries to start a fire. Which was fantastic as it showed the human element where the character is actually affected by their environment, and not just superimposed into it.
Lara demonstrates resourcefulness in how she tackles her enemies (like using the bow to choke them from behind is some damn good ingenuity) or how she uses a lantern as a weapon. So when she's aware of the frail condition of her tank top, worn out by dampness and dirt, you'd think she would figure out a good jacket isn't needed by a scavenger she just killed :P
As for the regenerating health, that was confirmed, which seems to be mainly a feature in combat situations. Crystal Dynamics also mentions that food and water will also play a vital role in Lara's ongoing survival and well being in the wilderness. Though they've kept a tight lid on how the two mechanics balance each other out. Guess we'll have to wait and see on that one.

Oh and something else I wanted to bring up from the live feed last night - the video camera. Most of you might have seen the concept art of Lara juddled in her shelter, watching the viewscreen of the camera by a camp fire? Those moments are indeed in the game,as she relives moments of her time on the Endurance before the crash.
It gives great background details not only of Lara, but her colleagues as well. And I'm sure throughout the course of her journey, it will really punctuate the contrast of Lara's transformation, in who she is now and who she was at the start of her voyage, where things seemed so simple while on the Endurance.
I was really impressed by the environments. Looked very atmospheric. I just want to roam around on the island. freedomfreak
Same here. The 10 hr play time is clearly an estimate for those who only take the linear path of the main plot. I'm sure my play through will easily be double that, as I want to SEE every obscured corner of the island, plus to scrounge for all those relics, collectibles (especially the hidden journal entries), and the hidden tombs :D

True, true. You just go treasure/collectible hunting in TR games. You just do. It will be fun exploring every nook and cranny of that place. Please Log In to post.
