Ah the ignorance. Yes I'm talking about you. To say the Legend - Underworld games were the same as previous games in the series is beyond stupid. In fact people COMPLAINED THEY WERE TOO DIFFERENT. Me included. Those games completely changed the way Tomb Raider played. Some people thought for the better. Some people thought for the worse. Bottom line: You're completely wrong. Anyone complaining the Legend trilogy did nothing different to the previous games has never played a Tomb Raider game in their life.
The Legend backlash was actually pretty similar to the backlash of this game. Complaints at how linear it was compared to previous games. Complaints at how dumbed down and linear it was. Of course CD improved a lot with Anniversary and Underworld though.
R4gn4r0k
Nope, people complained about how the combat system still wasn't any good. Making the combat more like Uncharted is a change for the better. The story was weak too, this game looks like it will have a far better story. Again a change for the better.
Change too much = people complain
Change too little = people complain
Same thing with Max Payne 3. It was a great game but still people complained because it wasn't exactly the same as Max Payne 1&2.
I enjoyed all the Tomb Raider games as well as the Uncharted trilogy. I will enjoy this game too so I'm glad to be ignorant like you say if it means me enjoying more great games :)
Yes people still complained about the combat and story. People would NOT have complained about change if those games were good in those areas, and those are not the things that are being complained about with this game. In that regard I suppose Legend was similar to previous games. But overall it was COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. It was a drastic change in the way Tomb Raider played, and because of that it upset fans, but brought in new ones. You see this is the thing. This game does change certain things for the better. We all jumped for joy when we heard the combat wouldn't suck this time. Nobody was complaining when we found out there's a good chance the story might be good. Nobody is complaining about those changes. Don't act like they are. The changes we are complaining about are the areas where the game has been dumbed down. Going completely for the cinematic experience with a lot of automated crap ala Uncharted.
And I say again, these were the exact same complaints by the fans with Legend. Yes there were the usual TR complaints about the crappy combat and such. But this time, there was HUGE backlash within the fanbase about how insanely different it was. And not for the better either. There's nothing better about completely removing exploration, making the game super linear and dumbing down the puzzles and making the platforming so pathetically easy. Sure, for people that had never played a TR game before none of this mattered and it was the crappy combat that people complained about most. But from within the fanbase itself the complaints at Legend were mostly about how dumbed down the game was compared to previous titles, despite certain things it did do a lot better.
It's the same thing with this game. We love certain improvements that have been made with this game and welcome them. What we do not welcome is how far they're going to provide the cinematic experience at the expense of the other qualities people love about the series.
With regards to Legend, people kept saying it tried too hard to be Prince of Persia. Just like this game is being compared with Uncharted. Just bring up any argument people have about this game but replace the word Uncharted with Prince of Persia, and you'll have an idea of what the backlash was like within the fanbase about Legend at the time.

Because gamers in general haven't a clue what they want. And they hate change but love nostalgia. Too many gamers are hung up in the past

That is going soley on trailers though. There could still be exploration in the game. I'm sure the whole game isn't like: crawl through this small tunnel.
Same with Hitman: Absolution. People going soley on trailers complained about how the focus was now on shooting more than stealth, yet anyone who played the game can tell them: the stealth is still in there. It's still great.
That's just marketing for you: market your game like a linear shooter and you will get more sales. ;)
Why would you ever need gameplay mechanics when you can have an epic and compelling cutscene/QTE like this?
ChubbyGuy40
Oh dear. It's nothing like the old Tomb Raider. :(
That really is not saying much at all. THough I don't think the game will be as open as I was hoping. I love Uncharted, but I wanted this to be more of a Metroid layout.
So Lara will be a walking tank capable of weathering gunshot wounds. That totally fits with the theme of her growing to be harderned adventurer. Totally. Jeesh, gah.skrat_01
Lara a tank? Please tell me this is hyperbole/sarcasm :?
Might be false but if that's true then good god, why add something like that to this game? In all liklehood the game is ok but I doubt it's controls will be tight enough for a competitive MP side of things.
seanmcloughlin
Multiplayer has been rumored for a long time. All started two years ago, when Crystal Dymanics were looking for multiplayer developers to work on Tomb Raider.

Almost every main protagonist is like this these days.
I think people are just assuming too much already. They hear and see a few things and they go apesh!t. This does not only go for TR. Absolution is a great recent example. Also, this game *will* be different from previous TR games. It's a reboot. Complaining it will be different is ridiculous.freedomfreak
I think so too. It's happening with a lot of sequels lately.
When people heard Max Payne 3 wouldn't those have comic panels they went crazy too. In the end it didn't make any difference, max payne 3 was a great game.
Health regen sounds pointless in this style of game, what, you're supposed to survive and grow as a character (the point of this reboot), but you are immortal? Nah, they'll find a way to properly incorporate it somehow.
Though it is strange to be unable to swim, considering the setting of the game. That makes no sense, unless you can only watch her swim in cutscenes. Who knows what other gameplay mechanics they've deemedunnecessary..

That's the point, it's ben stated and understood that this game will be different than the previous entries, and will focus on surviving in a strange land and growing as a character to the strong Lara Croft that is in previous games. But if you add a badly incorporated regen health, then everything that was showed and presented about the game can be thrown in the sh*t barrel.

It's a shame about the regen. But their might be more to it. Also, health regen alone is not reason enough to totally rid it off its survival element. Not to mention, taking lightly what developers always tell. I don't know about you, but I'm fairly skeptical when a developer talks about his game. It's a shame about the regen. That's why i am almost certain that they'll properly incorporate it to fit the game. They've already made the game's entire point about survival, vulnerability and growing as a character quite clear.
For a dev. team to suddenly ignore everything and just make it a Uncharted clone like some complained here is ridiculous since it doesn't make any sense. There's nothing in which to survive, grow and develop if the game's going to be overused set pieces and QTEs. With Uncharted, it works, because it's a totally different st.yle from what the Tomb Raider devs are trying to achieve.

Well, judging from the video it's very linear and filled with QTEs, and the source in this thread have confirmed that the game will have health regeneration. Not good.
Looks like I'm going to pass. It just seems that the developer of the game is trying to appeal the masses (casuals). Don't call me SNIPER just for the sake of it because it's the truth.

Makes sense to judge the entire game off that. Smart. This doesn't kill hype, but it does kinda make the overall plot seem sketchy. The story is about young Lara toughening up, suviving the jungle and the men trying to kill her. Doesn't make sense for her to just get shot and shrug it off after a few seconds.
Ehh, won't be a big deal.

Oh yeah, because I've done nothing but spouted praise for this game. Yeah, right. I hardly have any feelings towards this game. I'm just psyched for it. I'm not even defending the game. I'm not in denial about the game. I've said before that I'm gonna hold off judgment. What you said has nothing to do with opinion. Roll with it if the game is good enough around it. I'm just saying that every portagonist being like that doesn't make this any less silly. What's skrat saying is true. lara is suppose to become this super badass, but at the beginning of this game is suppose to be pathetic compared to what she becomes.
