Gran Turismo does well, it doesn't mean it's a good game. I like to look at Justin Timberlake, 50 Cent, and Kanye West when it comes to things like this. Success =/= Greatness for anyone except the company and person pushin the mediocrity.

I'm pretty sure GT3 didn't come out until about 18 months AFTER the PS2 launched.

But whatever, GT5 will PWN.

It's not a bad game, but it really does nothing new. Sure, I guess they'll have damage modeling this time around, but the core gameplay is still pretty much the same as what I played on PS2, but just prettier. I'll buy it and hope for more though. I love the cockpit views.

I can bring up quite a few PS3 game sales to counter your argument, but for right now I'll just ask this question.

What was the price of the PS2 when GT3 released?

Point of fact: the PS2 did have more than 10 million by the end of 2001. In fact, it had 8 million in the US alone.

Thank you Rose, I was about to mention this, as this thread is in response to something I just said in another thread, but you beat me to it. I love reading your posts, you always use facts, and always find links to prove them. Keep dishing that ownage!

As for the thread starter, as I said in that other thread, back then GT could sell consoles.

At this time, with this hardware price, GT is not going to be selling nearly as long as it did back then.

He can sig me all he wants. If I am wrong, I will accept it. If he is wrong, I will never let hime or the rest of the forum forget it.

Answer: Nothing. Might we also add that Grand Theft Auto 3, Devil May Cry, Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2 had also released that same year (2001) Exclusive to the PlayStation 2. When the Xbox and Gamecube had just come out. The PS2 at this time was around $199-299. Those were some of the games that the PS2 had the first year before any other consoles came out. Not including the Dreamcast.

I can see how the PlayStation 3 is just like the PlayStation 2, what with all the AAA genre defining games out the first year.

Why do you think the game industry has declined 50% with this generation? Only the release of the Wii and the promise of something different saved the industry from collapse.

I like to look at it like this.

Gt5= FIFA style soccer games. Has all the extra jazz and looks nicely polished, however gamplay feels fake.

Forza2=pro evolution style games. Doesn't have all the flash and jazz and maybe lacking in some parts, however the gameplay is undoubtly very realisitic.

Look at the monthly console sales. The original Xbox sold consistently over 150,000 units a month. The PS3 until its price drop barely managed 80,000 units a month. The PS2, meanwhile, sold consistently over 300,000 to 400,000 units per month, while the Xbox 360 is selling barely 180,000 per month.

It doesn't take a genius to realize that the Wii is the only home system saving this generation. The only reason this industry is seeing a growth in console sales is because of the Wii, which is selling better than the PS2 ever did. If you remove Nintendo from the equation, and compare only Sony and Microsoft over both generations, then there's been a 50% drop in sales.

I wonder why Grand Turismo 3 sold 7 million copies in the US and why Grand Turismo 4 sold only 2.6 with a much larger userbase.

The only game that picked up speed and outsold the game before it was Grand Theft Auto, which is now Multi-plat.

MGS 2 sales > MGS 3. FFX sales > FFXII. DMC 1 sales > DMC 2 & 3.

Nice comparison... but its all about taste at the end of the day and lets not become fanboys and think our opinions/tastes are better than others.

We should all be happy with the games we have left especialy the great ones.

The 360 according to your figures is selling more than the xbox!!!

The PS3 is selling badly because of pricepoint and lack of games. You also have an incredibly vibrant handheld market. The fact is that every month at the minute is breaking sales records. Plus the 360 is shifting huge numbers of units in games.

All thats happenned is the Wii and GC have swapped places with the PS2 and PS3 in positions (see price point). There isn't room for all the consoles to sell 400k a month.

No fanboyishness intended :P. I prefer both gran turismo style games and forza as well as fifa and pro evo. If i were to make a choice i would go gt5 over forza just because i like the extra jazz, however many feel gameplay is more important.

Yes, it is, but only barely. And not enough to make up for the PS3's deficit.

The PS2 also had a lack of games in its first year. That didn't stop it selling 400,000 a month. And price point is part of the reason for the industry's decline. You're using it as an excuse, when it's actually a central cause and a central problem. All factors come into play in the final analysis.

You also have an incredibly vibrant handheld market.blue_hazy_basic

Yeah, driven mainly by the DS. The PSP is doing worse than the GBA, so that's ANOTHER decline.

The fact is that every month at the minute is breaking sales records.blue_hazy_basic

Because of the DS and the Wii, NOT because of anything else. Compared to last generation, everything else has seen a decline.

Plus the 360 is shifting huge numbers of units in games.blue_hazy_basic

True enough, but low console sales will eventually catch up with this and limit the overall software volume of the 360.

All thats happenned is the Wii and GC have swapped places with the PS2 and PS3 in positions (see price point). There isn't room for all the consoles to sell 400k a month.blue_hazy_basic

Exactly why I say the Wii is the only reason this generation is seeing a growth. People here say the game industry is growing, yet they also hate Nintendo and the Wii. To me, that doesn't make sense, because while Nintendo didn't make an impact last generation, Nintendo is the REASON why this generation is still showing growth compared to last generation.

Except the PS2 did have games its first year, Devil May Cry being its first killer app, followed by Metal Gear Solid 2, Grand Turismo 3, Grand Theft Auto 3, Final Fantasy X blah blah blah. All by the end of 2001, the same year the Xbox and Game-cube launched. It was also Half the price of the PS3 ($199-299 vs $499-599), which has no real system seller out this year, the PS2 had all it's bases covered by the time the Xbox and Gamecube launched.

You said it: THE END OF 2001. Is it the end of 2007 yet? No. The PS2 had ONE killer app by this time in 2001: GT3. It was the ONLY million seller of that year until the holidays began.

I have a Wii and have nothing against the system I love it (until my dog chewed through the power cord last week it was always our "go to" thing to play with guests). However, I can see some people's view that it hurts the gaming industry. Game sales for the console have been pretty lackluster, partly due to the poor selection and its audience don't buy a huge number of games a year and many of the games do not appeal to a hardcore western gaming audience of this forum.

However, it will undoubtedly be a gateway for non/casual gamers to be exposed to more gaming and so should be good for the health of the industry overall, but the Wii is not the saviour of gaming by any means. Besides a certain Mr PC might want to have a word with you ... :D

That's a myth. The Wii has an average software attach rate of a little over 4 right now in the US. The 360 at this time last year had a software attach rate of 3.4.

"GT5 will be lucky to sell 1 million like Forza 2 did because PS3 doesn't have 120 million userbase like PS2" -

Gran Turismo 3 launced on PS2 in 2001, then the PS2(somebody correct me here) had not even reached 10 million BUT it ended up selling 14.87 MILLION.

See how silly you guys (mostly 360 fans) look when you say that

Next time I see it, you will be put in my sig pending when I can have oneor I'll sign you up for a gig at comedy central

Liquid-GEAR

Ya because that makes sense buy a game that you don't even have the system to play it. What did they do look at the case and imagining they were playing.

That may be, but the games about to be released still eclipsed the launch of the Xbox and GameCube. By this time 2001 we had the best racing simulator on the market, Devil May Cry coming out in about 2 weeks, Grand Theft Auto 3 on the 22nd of October, Metal Gear Solid 2 on November 14th and Final Fantasy X in December. (NA, it was released in July in Japan which was a huge blow to the GameCube and Xbox.)

Also the Game-Cube and Xbox had nothing to compare to Grand Theft Auto, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Grand Turismo or Devil May Cry. Which is what explains WHY the PlayStation 2 dominated last generation.

I agree that Gran Turismo 5 will most likely outsell Forza 2.
But you have to remember that Gran Turismo 3 was packaged with the PlayStation 2 console, so thats not a fair way of counting sales.

Gran Turismo does well, it doesn't mean it's a good game. I like to look at Justin Timberlake, 50 Cent, and Kanye West when it comes to things like this. Success =/= Greatness for anyone except the company and person pushin the mediocrity.BioShockOwnz
Did you just bash Kanye West?

I guess that explains the drop from 7 million sold (GT3) to 2.6 million sold (GT4) in NA.

I can bring up quite a few PS3 game sales to counter your argument, but for right now I'll just ask this question.

What was the price of the PS2 when GT3 released?

Yellow_Rose

How exactly would a PS3 sales ratio counter an academic event that occurred last generation?

Moreover, there was not yet a price-drop for the PS2 when GT3 was released.

Maybe because when GT3 was released it was the only console on the market, and was only $299. Don't say the Dreamcast, because as much as I love it by 2001 it was done in by Sony.

So? What does this have to do with the severe decline in "standard" game consoles compared to last gen?

This doesnt make any sense to me,who cares how many copies of forza or GT were sold if we enjoy the games because they're good ¿¡why should we give a straw about how many copies of them were sold !?

@BreakingPoint,

My point is that, at that time, the $300 price-tag for a system is this generation's $5-600 price-tag. And yet people still consumed the GT3 product.
