Cloud gaming is the future and should be pushed. I'd love it were it to get up to a better standard than at present.

Anyway, it looks like this all a bunch of rumours - OnLive saying to numerous sites that they are NOT closing.

and Michael Pachter tweeted this just now: "Michael Pachter:
The OnLive story seems odd to me. I know them pretty well, and financing not an issue. It must be a changed strategy to an all IP model"

Ravensmash

Cloud gaming is not a guarenteed future. People only think everything is going to the cloud because it's still a hot and trendy topic.

It is Friday, the perfect day to lay people off.

It's Patcher, why are you listening to him?

Are mods compatible with onlive? Didn't think so.

Cloud gaming is dumb as f*ck.

Not surprised. Lots of people still like the idea of owning and controlling their media.

I dont understand the glee of some users about this statement, true or not! Its clearly the future and would work alot better than the horribly outdated current consoles and the moderately outdated next generation consoles

Because it's happened with every other entertainment medium out there. Music, TV, films - all very healthy in cloud/streaming models at the moment. Why is gaming the exception? Of course it requires more, but the tech is progressing fairly rapidly. And it's Pachter, someone who has access to the industry clearly.

The advantages are too great:

| No need to download/install games anymore, you can play games right from the get go

| No need to download/install patches

| You can try out full games (for a certain amount of time) before buying them, again without the need to download or install those games

| You wont have to buy an expensive gaming PC

| You wont need to constantly upgrade your hardware in order to keep up with the latest games

| The costs of your electricity bills will be (much) lower

| Gaming will evolve much faster, Gaikai insists Devs crank up their games to their fullest potential

| Everyone can enjoy the same graphics and not just a select few people

| Hermits wont be able to complain anymore that consoles are holding them back

| You can take Gaikai everywhere with you, you save your games online and continue the game somewhere else

| Any device now has the potential to host great graphical video games

Hermits are desperate, they know their gaming rig will become obsolete.

Prepare for cloud gaming haters

And? One size does not fit all. Music, TV, film, none of which is interactive media. Games are, and because of several complications, it will never be ready for serious gaming.

And Fargo has access to the industry too. Patcher is just an analyst, nothing more. I trust a developer far more than an analyst who bashes anything he can and praises crap for headline spots.

One thing I don't understand is how is cloud gaming supposed to be profitable? They have these huge data centers and the only way people buy their games are from cheap sales that still can't match Steam. Along with the maintenance bill, they have to upgrade servers to run the 2 or 3 latest games they have and what is likely a massive internet bill. I don't understand how such a small userbase that barely buys games could make them break even.

If true, that sucks, because the service is really good when you use it with tablets and smartphones.

Well they have to go big to make a splash.

Check out who their partners and investors are, it will all make sense.

And big they have not gotten. Gaikai succeeded since Sony bought them, but we don't even know what they're doing yet.

It seems to me like investors just throw cash at it without understanding the risks because other streaming services worked in the past before.

Yeah,if they truly went out of bussiness, that'd arguably be positive for the industry...

People would get a first-hand experience how risky and crappy cloud gaming is...

Is a future where you don't own anything at all really the future you want for yourself as the consumer?

Is a future where a client going out of bussiness permanently cuts away access to all of your "games" what you want?

Then there are risks of hacking,no user-made content like mods, huge potential issues for people with slower or unstable Internet connection such as myself,etc...

No,cloud gaming is not the future,it's a hot topic today, but I don't see it ever turning into something serious. If it does, that'll be my cue to find another hobby...

There'll always be a solid number of people supporting the traditional retail model...

The OnLive employee has sent a "recall" message on the email. Now what does that mean?

Update from his twitter.

That someone politely informed Fargo's source that his severance package requires him to continue to adhere to his NDA, perhaps?

From the sounds of things, it seems like they've fired everyone and are going to restart as a new company (for whatever reason). So OnLive is dead, but a similar company run by the same people will start up in its place.

When Sony was thinking about which cloud service to purchase On-Live was selling for a fortune so they ended up acquiring Gaikai and now On-Live is going bankrupcy? Talking about bad luck....

What do I 'own' on Steam? I'm still paying for a license to access the content and it's still locked down by DRM. Heck, if I get banned from Steam then Valve can quite happily lock me out of any purchases made on their store (wasn't this actually highlighted in a recent TOU update?). I completely understand why people have objections, but let's not pretend that other online stores are a beacon of freedom and consumer rights here.

You download and run the games locally, you can back them up on external drives/discs in case Steam goes down, you don't need permanent and fast Internet connection, and game files are accessible, which allows for user modding...

No,DD stores have their share of DRM and limitations, but they're nowhere as bad as the concept of cloud gaming...

Also, being banned from Steam for reasons like cheating allows you to play your owned SP games:

Exactly...

DD can cause some issues, and has some grey areas, but still,as a consumer, you have some freedom.

But cloud gaming would take it ALL away, you're completely at the mercy of the publisher, who has the full control over your game...

I don't care if cloud gaming is the future, but I won't ever use it. If I can't get retail games or the GOG.com system of offline installers, then I just won't get any games and find something else to fill my free time.

Ahh there has been some updates to that link:

Update:Kotaku is nowhearing from "a source inside OnLive"that there in fact was a meeting this morning where CEO Steve Perlman told the staff that the company was filing for bankruptcy, and that no one would be employed by the current OnLive going forward. We're still researching this story, and will provide more information when we get it.

Update:IDG's Martyn Williamsreports via Twitterthat he's outside OnLive's headquarters in Palo Alto, CA, and that he's seeing "employees leaving OnLive headquarters with moving boxes." It's looking more and more like there were layoffs at the company today. Joystiq is continuing to follow up.

An interesting idea with a very bad execution. Pehaps someday it could get better...but today is not that day.

Lol at people who threw money at this. Unless someone "too big to fail" gets behind it, like MS or Sony or Apple, I'd stay well away from it.

Your damage control is astounding. Fun fact, Onlive was powered by the same tech Gakai is using! LMFAO.

And Onlive is larger. And I doubt Sony could even afford to power Gakai and it'll end up on the backburner. Mark my words.
