I think it aged very well. I still play that and Majora's Mask today...along with Link to the Past and Wind Waker. I love me some Zelda.
I liked OOT alot. I wasn't one of the ones that thought it deserved a 10 though. Of course I have fond memories of Zelda A Link to the Past on the SNES and Zelda on the NES so, to me, those were the greats of the series. A Link to the Past especially. One of my favorite games of all time. OOT was a great game but definitely not a 10.

OOT is the best game ever. Enough said.

Nostalgia? Whats so great about it, the combat is incredibly plain.
1. stop acussing everyone that says oot is great of feeling nostalgia.
2. the most appealing part of oot is the story, not the combat.
3. gamespot gave it a 10.
4.its better than most games even now.
Innovative, possibly revolutionary combat system (lock on targeting).
Great variety in puzzles and challenges.
Epic boss fights.
Amazing soundtrack.
Amazing graphics for 1998.
Great storyline (except for the stupid owl, but yea w/e I can dig it.)
Lengthy campaign with a ridiculous ammount of side content.
Very very little, if any, in the way of annoyances or bugs.
GeeI dunno why is it amoung the best games ever I wonder.....
There was no metacritic around when the game was released and generally agreed to be among the greatest games of all time.
Please, can't you find something else to criticise? This is basically like saying Beethoven's 9th symphony is terrible just because it's popular and it was written in a time when he had nothing to record it with and no Metacritic to give him their all important seal of approval.
although wind waker is my favorite zelda, accusing those who enjoy oot nowadays based soley on nostalgia pretty dumb. for alot of people the zelda formula works, and oot stands out alot because with later zelda's they have in fact experimented with it a bit. consider majora's dark themes and time limit and wind wakers sailing and sidequest based flow, not to mention cell shading approach (TP is prolly the only ammo non zelda fans can stick to).
personally I think its aged great, the artistic direction still has its charm and the journey and dungeons are still some of the best out there, hell try and play some of the boss battles (still stand up to todays games for sure). you compare the game ranking to RE4(which is actually my 3rd favorite game of all time) but you obviously werent around at the time when this game was making pretty much all the best of lists and game of the year awards that RE4 did. both pretty revolutionary for their time and IMO aged much better than games reletive to their time (OOT also came out on reletively great year for its competitor).
it may be opinion when coming to quality, but generalizing anyone getting enjoyment out of it soley on nostalgic feeling in what appears to be an attempt to diminish its impact and stature isn't exactly a good (or educated) approach.
I never played it until a year ago and still see why it's the best game of all time. The graphics were amazing, the combat system was revolutionary and the story and atmosphere were amazing.

I'l give you everything else but graphics??. Im pretty sure you werent playing on a N64 :P
I thought it held up great actually. Other than the obvious aged graphics, the story, characters, items, puzzles, boss fights and items are all still top notch even by todays standards. I still play it every now and then, and its still just as hard to put down. most people who bash this game have either never played it or are so turned off by the graphics that they just dont give it a try. sad really.
Well, I'm sure many games this gen would easily win OOT if they were made 10 years ago. Lumines would blow Tetris away if it was made in 1989. :( No games last forever. Gaming will gradually evolve to near perfect each era, but then the later generation will be better. What would u choose to play if u were in 90's? OOT or the latest TP remake on Wii (if Wii was made together with N64)?Kleeyook
I'm unsure really. Each generation seems to have its focus and devs hone in on that. would you say current ds game are uncomparible in enjoyment to current consoles because they have the similar limitations of the 32/64bit era? I do believe lots of games evolve, but more so that it makes them different, but not always clearly better.
I remember when I played OOT day 1, I was in awe! It was really quite the striking game when it first came out. Seeing a big, pretty open world game in 3D for the first time was quite amazing. I really just wanted to lose myself into the world and start exploring every corner of it.
Also even to this day I believe OOT is the only Adventure, RPG or any other kind of lengthy game I actually completed more than once. I never play those kind of games a 2nd time, I play through it once and never look back after that. OOT was the exception, that alone speaks volume as far as I'm concerned at how great this game was.
So, three years after it was released. Can you think maybe why that might dull your appreciation of it? Yeah, thats partially true. However, a true masterpiece stands the test of time. Shenmue 2, Donkey Kong Country, and RE4 are examples of sublime gaming, they aged really well and not many titles play like them.[QUOTE="Danm_999"][QUOTE="iKINGBOBi"]

Ocarina of Time stands the test of time.
Try playing the game today, it didn't age well at all.

Every once in a while i play OoT again, and i'm still find it superb, hell, i've finish the game maybe 8 or 10 times, and everytime i play it is still a blast, no other game has come close to this (maybe StarCraft or Crono Trigger), sorry TC, i'm not agree with you at all, only on the fact that it is unfair to compare it with other games, yeah, OoT destroy them :P
The problem is, most of those reviews were done well after the release of the game, by people looking back upon the game favourably. Majora's Mask, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are all better games... but its the rose-tinted goggles that makes people think that Ocarina of Time is "the best."

I actually agree with you there. Wind Waker IMO was the best zelda game of all time and MM and TP were both better also. But when you look back, OOT stated it all, and thats also where it gets it's praise (not to mention it's also an amazing game).

Yeah it really does.I've been playing that game all week and other than the annoying targeting system, the gameplay is above and beyond a lot of games.Even today the gameplay blows many games out of the water.
You obviously didn't play this game before the year 2000. Otherwise you wouldn't be making this thread.
Blue-Sky
the problem is that everyone has their own criterias when judging games
and thats also the main reason we all think the best game ever is a diffrent one.
And calling someone blind becouse of nostalgia dosent really help at all.
we all play games for diffrent reasons, and if 1 game gives me that one feeling
that makes me happy i wouldnt say by any means its overrated becouse of that.
those people who get distracted by nostalgia are not worse then those who get distracted by pritty graphics
or music. its all about the feeling we get when we play these games.
and for me OoT is clearly the second best game ever created.

I agree, it doesn't deserve to be called the greatest game of all-time.
CDUB316
and what do YOU think deserves to be called the greatest game of all time jake?
I think Jakes opinion will vary as he would not have been capable of playing OOT around the time it came out. Pretty good excuse I guess.[QUOTE="taj7575"]I actually agree with you there. TIME TRAVEL. Not only that but the game had the most soul out of every game I have ever played till now.
Yeah, but Chrono Trigger's story was more than "collect X number of something to save the princess". Now, I'm not saying it's not a good game, I think it's one of the most important games ever made. But it's still not the masterpiece people make it out to be.SpiralStairsS
Good job butchering zelda's story to a 'simple collect x number of something to save the princess'
That's like describing memento with 'find your wife's killer'
Zelda was more than that. It was a masterpiece, it is a masterpiece, it will still be a masterpiece. Not many games can say the same.

Totally agree. I just wish some game would manage to come out and capture the soul that Chrono Trigger had. Best memories of a game ever. I replay it at least twice every year.OoT and Chrono Trigger are one of the best games ever made but why are you comparing them? Chrono is a rpg and OoT is a third person adventure game.Miroku32Exactly. Most game vs game comparisons are dumb.

I'm not comparing them, i'm just saying that they both have some aspects in common that make both of them great.
I was playing OoT recently and I've never been a huge fan to the point of saying it's the best thing ever, hell I found MM to be much better. However look at the time the game was released, it's a pretty damn good quality 3D title in a time when this was pretty much new, it's an adventure never done before in that "format" so going by this I give it credit.
Nostalgia is what makes OOT so great and it is godly game for Nintendo fans.
Either way, OOT is not great now compare to what else is out there.
Times changed, people need to move on.
More people play counter strike to OOT, maybe every game should be compared to that instead, forget the score.

Do you guys not understand the concept of an opinion? My God, the arrogance on this thread. People throw around their opinions like they are facts.
yea...and whenever someone says their favorite game is a game from the past...they automatically jump on them and just say it's all nostalgia and it's really not
OOT is an AMAZING game and it hasn't aged AT ALL...the gameplay is still simple, the story is still the same...the only difference between OOT and games today is pretty much the graphics
