Does anyone remember a FAMILY movie called the Wizard, a 90 minute advertisement for Nintendo? Gaming in the mainstream isn't new. Cartoons used to be made about video games, and still are. Cartoons meant for kids sitting on their living room floors with parents nearby.

the methods may have changed, but the result is the same. Advertising to parents. Nintendo and now Sony and Microsoft have gone one step further and their to include parents in playing the games as well. Video games are the new board games.

I feel sorry for the "hardcore" gamers who seem to feel threatened by this.

If you listened to punk in the early 80s and see what they're calling punk at Hot Topic now, then you know it's not far-fetched.

NEStorianPriest

And if you played RPGs in the early 80s and look at what's called RPG today... and that was before the oh so evil motion controls or casual gaming. Streamlining games to give them more "mass appeal" isn't new. It pretty much began at the point when games stopped being created by talented enthusiasts on their own time and money before finding a publisher for it. You could just as well blame the graphics craze for making it impossible to create a game without a team and a ton of money. Enter publishers to finance game development and enter game design being based on economical considerations instead of creativity and fresh ideas.

Maybe I should define myself as "original gamer" based on age and blame all of todays "core gamers" for the downfall of gaming and for allowing the market to be taken over by nothing but FPS and RTS games. Looking at it that way, it's almost funny how the very crowd whining about how motion and casual games will ruin "gaming" has already ruined it by getting off over "graphics kings" and buying all the CoDs, MoHs, Halos, GoWs, KZs and all the other "lame Wolfenstein rip offs".

"Gaming shouldn't expand its audience, it should always be about US HARDCORE GAMERS WHO OWN GAMING SYSTEM!!!!!!!!!!!" People can't possibly be any more ignorant. Kinect obviously isn't targeting people like us who already own one or more gaming systems, it is targeting family members (women, especially, in Oprah's case) who aren't into shooting rendered models to death. The definition of "gaming" shouldn't limit itself to killing, shooting and looting. And seriously, how is it going to affect us, anyway? It's not like companies will stop making "hardcore games" when Kinect is out. Get over yourself, you aren't the only people entitled to play "games".

Yup, but fanboys have a myopic view on gaming and when they see something as bad they think it will resonate with the rest of the world. I DO think Kinect is bad, but thats because I dont find it appealing. Im sure people who loved Wiifit will flock to Kinect fit because its much more intuitive and natural to use. Same with that dance game. It targets an audience that rarely games.

Oprah and Kinect were made for eachother.

I'm so not shocked that you blame Nintendo. Won't be long until we hear how Sega is better.

I can see the future.

You shouldn't be, considering that this is common knowledge

I don't care for Kinect atm, either (I might be when they release more games in the future), but anyone who thinks Yoga and Dancing games wouldn't work/sell on Kinect is crazy and narrow minded. I do find it odd that they made Kinectimal instead of combining Kinect and Viva Pinata. Tiger is so much lamer than paper mache animal.

You will get your wish when Rare releases their next project. It belongs to Rare only.

Yeah yeah we get it. Kinect is crap. However gaming is not dead.

timmy00

The thing is ... not everyone here actually gets it.

Only two people like the damn thing >_>

Everyone else either hates it or don't care for it. I'm just tired of all these Kinect threads and how gaming is dying, failing, ect.

Yet who makes those threads? People who are enthusiastic about kinect and those who hate it, but can't stop talking about it. Also all of us who get into Kinect threads to discuss it. Btw, The 2 people you are referring to who like Kinect here in SW would be Project Natal Fan and me?

You're welcome. But it doesnt sound like kinect is the culprit in this case. Sounds like you have a beef with the traditional games market.

markinthedark

Um, no. Oprah fans go crazy, MS makes money off Kinect, grabs up market share, buys out competition. US anti-trust laws gather dust. Games cater to the masses, like you apparently, that don't play games like Demon's Souls. Gaming becomes boring.

Thats one hell of a slipperly slope argument there.

And if you are mad about the successor to demon souls being made easier... probably should blame that on the folks that bought the game and complained about the difficulty. Not us folks that never played it ;)

Oh the drama. The apocalypse. If the gaming industry dies, we all now can blame Kinect and Oprah for it.LOL
