Out of all the AAAAE's, MGS4 is easily the greatest example of Overrated game ever.. Evah !! :P

And this is coming from someone who has played a number of AAAAE titlesincludingOcarina of Time, Soul Caliber, GTA 4 (notexclusive to oneconsolebut still worth mentioning), and Mario Galaxy 2. MGS4 is unlike any other game I've ever played, the game is simply jaw-dropping visually and the gameplay, as well as the story suck you in and immerse you into an incredible experience. Not to knock off any of the other games that recieved 10s, but MGS4 is one experience you absolutely can not miss out on. If for some insane reasonyou still have not played it yet, please play it.I'd argue it is still worth buying a PS3 solely for this game.

The game didn't deserve a 10 at all. It's basically a movie with 4hrs of game play. The game play wasn't anything spectacular. I gave it a 9 score as it did have several flaws that even the reviewers noted. Yet they still gave the game a 10. Even GTA IV didn't deserve a 10. Mario Galaxy 2 was pretty much perfection. If there were any flaws it was very, very minor. I can understand why they gave that game a 10, but it could have easily gotten a 9.5 as well. MGS4 is definitely not the greatest and was seriously overrating by reviewers who were so hyped up on finally getting a AAAE PS3 game that they just threw the 10 score at it. lol!! If it was released today, many of those reviewers would not give it a 10.

I 100% agree.
Mgs4 is a movie with 4 hours of most of gameplay even on middling difficulties it can be beat easily just running around enemies and only dealing with enemies that progress the story.
WilliamRLBaker
Any game can be beat easily and quickly by running around non essential enemies though :?
SMG2 and GTA4 are better.
With those games I don't have to deal with any pathetic fan service that gets in the way in telling a comprehensive story that...you know...is extremely stupid.
SMG2 and GTA4 are better.drinkerofjuiceI've never played SMG2 but to say GTA4 is better just blows my mind. That dating sim is lightyears away from the masterpiece that MGS4 was.
[QUOTE="drinkerofjuice"]SMG2 and GTA4 are better.Eddie-VedderI've never played SMG2 but to say GTA4 is better just blows my mind. That dating sim is lightyears away from the masterpiece that MGS4 was. Don't play it like a dating sim, then? GTA4's experience is how you make it. You don't HAVE to answer those calls, just like how you can turn your cell phone off.
But even then, I usually had fun playing bowling and pool. Not darts though. Too easy to win.
With those games I don't have to deal with any pathetic fan service that gets in the way in telling a comprehensive story that...you know...is extremely stupid.drinkerofjuiceAnd to those who love MGS, these are huge positives (MGS has always been known for its complicated and convoluted conspiracy stories).

Eh, Snake Eater was my favorite because it didn't resort to fan service. For the most part its story was separate from the others, and despite things like Volgin and the Cobra Unit, it was the most grounded story in the series. And please, please don't call MGS complicated. The stories aren't complicated in the slightest, they just happen to be told in the most convoluted way possible. Fan service or not, poor storytelling is still poor storytelling.
Fan service or not, poor storytelling is still poor storytelling.drinkerofjuiceIt was in line with MGS and MGS2. You must just not like the games then.

Not to mention how rare it is to have an action oriented game with this level of story depth and storytelling, and continuity from one game to the next. It does it better then most RPG's...
People like to hate on MGS storytelling then bring up cinema and literature then they turn around and claim **** like Skyrim or Halo has a great story and storytelling. Just lolwoot dude.
It blends grounded fiction with over the top fantasy with real world problems and moral lessons. Some of the themes brought up in MGS2 which is considered "OMGWTF Makes no sense!!!11" were downright prophetical, the whole censoring the internet, and internet control, information control, with SOPA, PIPA and ACTA all happening now...
Not to mention the game still holds on to a sense of humour. MGS will ALWAYS be remembered as when of the greatest video game franchises, ever. Just because it's popular and people don't like it's style doesn't take any merit away form what it DID do, what it is.

Why should I care about this? I never thought those games had good stories, and I don't know anybody who does. But with those games, the story takes the backseat. With MGS the story is riding shotgun with the gameplay, and it still manages to be nothing more than an extremely convoluted, poorly written mess.Poor storytelling? As for the rest...
Eh, I'm not hating, but I never saw what the fuss was about. I actually bought my PS3 for MGS4 and the exclusives that were becoming available at the time (also, the MGS4 bundle had backwards compatibility, which I knew was going away).
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the game a lot. Played it through to the end. I'd give it an 8.5. Again, just an opinion. I certainly don't think that it, or GTA4 for that matter, deserved a 10.
The most overrated game ever on gamespot? The facgt that re4 and uncharted 2 didn't get that score is unbearable imo. At least choose a game that actually deserves it.
nhh18
RE4 has terrible controls.
Don't know if it's the greatest, but i had a hell of a time playing those couple of chapters. Love the gameplay.
I love MGS4, but it's not my favoiret game. I don't care what sites give scores to, I use my own opinion, and in mine I had more fun with LBP than I did MGS4. Hell LBP was my personal GOTY back in 2008, the amount of insane things you can create was amazing,I remember all the cool Oblivion and Bioshock levels people made on that game, perfect!
Also, I think Uncharted 2 and 3 are better games than MGS4.
Just proves how good a movie it is if it gets 10/10 on a gaming website!Mgs4 is a movie with 4 hours of most of gameplay even on middling difficulties it can be beat easily just running around enemies and only dealing with enemies that progress the story.

This game should have been AAAAE as well.
I mean, look at this boss fight. It isn't even my favorite boss fight in the game, in fact, I'd put 3 or 4 of them above it, but still, this one is amazing!

Edit: Man, I haven't played this game since it came out. I was on Facebook, and looking at a friend's page, and I saw some links of this game that I posted on his wall from way back in 2008 or whenever it came out, and it reminded me of how awesome it was. I mean, there is no other game out there that captures the epicness of this one. Here are the other boss fights if not just for my own entertainment. All in HD.

I probably forgot a few, but even though MGS4 is one of my favorite games this gen, probably my favorite, I think this game has better boss battles.
Well, obviously. It is exactly what every MGS fan ever wanted. Glorious fan service, explanations and closure. Plus fantastically refined gameplay.foxhound_fox
Please dont say that. If you liked it then great, but don't project that onto the fanbase. A lot of fans wanted a game that actually stuck with the prior established story and events. A lot of fans would have enjoyed the great level design and boss fights that the games were known for. A lot of fans would have enjoyed the meticulous design that went into the prior games.
Chalking everything up to Nanomachines and completely ignoring the previous aspects of the series that simply couldn't be explained away with Nanos is not what I call "explanation and closure".
And if gameplay that is actually more clunky than MGS2 is what you call refined then I dont know what to tell you. The game had more maneuvers than MGS2 and 3. Nice, sure, but not really so refined. Unless you are of the mindset that MGS should have always played like a TPS then I dont see what you could consider refined about the gameplay.
I personally liked MGS as MGS. I liked the story that the series brought to the table. I liked the gameplay that the series brought to the table. That is why many fans of the series including myself do not like MGS4.
Love the game all you want, but please don't speak for the fanbase.

If MGS4 had the same gameplay mechanics as Metal Gear Solid 1 through 3, it wouldn't have gotten a perfect 10 out of 10.
MGS4 is far from being the greatest.MGS 1 was better than 4.The whole game had about 2-3 hours of gameplay and like 15hours of cutscenes.
Um...mgs1 had, when in comparison to that game and time period, just as many cutscenes and as long. I don't get how mgs4 is always singled out. Gamers act like mgs4 is the only game they played in the series...which it might have been. The series has long cutscenes folks. Get over it. Either that, or just skip them entirely. Not that hard. :)MGS4 is far from being the greatest.MGS 1 was better than 4.The whole game had about 2-3 hours of gameplay and like 15hours of cutscenes.

Yep, on my first playthrough of MGS4, I clocked in 22 hours. About half of it was gameplay.
And LOL at the notion that MGS4 is a third person shooter. It is entirely possible to stealth your way through the entire game, with no alerts. Try that out on Big Boss Hard mode!!
Edit: The only people that complain about MGS4 cutscenes are people that just got introduced to the series with MGS4. Every single game in the series is heavy on cutscenes. Basically, every game in the series pushes hardware to the absolute max. No one had ever seen voice acting done in a video game like MGS 1 before. MGS4 takes it to a whole other level, but that's because it is pushing blu ray to the max this time.
If you're familiar with the MGS franchise, you'd know that cutscenes and codecs are nothing new to the series.
MGS 1 may have had as many cut scenes but not as long.I played MGS1 at least 15 times.MGS4 i played 3 times before i got tired of it.

Did it on The Boss Extreme on my second play. Out of the main series titles its bar far the easiest. Its my least played MGS game and is still the easiest to do a perfect run.
The game play is still clunky and geared towards tps. It happens to have stealth gameplay, but its certainly not built around the idea. People hold this strange notion that MGS4 gameplay is somehow better just because the controls are more in line with modern tps/fps design. Nothing was wrong with the games before. They just played different. Not bad. Different.

First, want to just say that Peace Walker is my fave MG game. And well...maybe not on the scale of 4, but it still had some lengthy cutscenes.

I thought MGS4 was way better mechanically. Just the simple fact that you can move around while crouched makes it better, IMO. Then you throw in the little additions like enemy shields (meat shields), being able to knock enemy weapons out of their hands while using them as meat shields, being able to go prone on your stomach and flip to your back, all the octocamo options, the introduction of the solid eye and all of the options for that, the MK2 and the functionality of it, the fact that you can go prone and roll side to side while in the prone position (I've never seen that in another game), the threat ring, the ability to play dead, the psyche guage, all on top of all the other abilities that remain intact from previous entries, and it's really hard to say that MGS4 didn't take the series to a higher level of mechanics.
