Just got Skyrim PC in the post today, FINALLY. Been waiting ages but things like driving lessons, $5000 home cinema projectors and etc has rendered be unable to buy video games this year, but finally I got Skyrim myself now. I open the box, ready to play the game.. but what thell???? "steam servers unable to handle this operation"????

Two hours later FINALLY Skyrim starts downloading, but it took 4 minutes before it got to 1%.

what the hell is this crap? just let me play my f***ng game!!!!!!

Lemmings go nuts for waiting for a PS3 game to install for 3-5 minutes, but jesus christ this is taking 3-5 hours.

Origin is far worse. Two different poorly-documented backup methods? No gifting? Some games still auto-patching at run time (the absolute worst time to try to install a patch) instead of background patching?

Why are you downloading Skyrim when you have the disc?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5357-FSQM-0382

Oh and the reason its slow right now is because of the big Sale that's going on (in case you some how missed it). Steam is usually slower during these days.

Delete your Skyrim content from within Steam and retry the disk install. If an install fails for whatever reason (such as a busy server), Steam thinks it needs to re-download the entire game, instead of backing out the install entirely (I guess Steam doesn't understand what a transaction is). I've had to do this on occasion if I decide to restore a backup during a Steam sale (it still does a server check to make sure you own it).

Depends on the country too. I can always max out my connection with Steam, during sales or no sales. (3.3 MB/s)

It's a Steamworks game, you HAVE to use Steam, so yes you will get Steam achievements.

It's strange. I have the same version - retail with Steam activation and I think it installed from the disc (fast).

As for DL speed, the servers are overloaded ATM, because of the sales. Try changing your DL server.

This was a known issue. Check the Skyrim steam forums, because people were working out how to install straight from the disk.

Imagine how much faster you would have found the solution if you were actually looking for it instead of making a thread on SW.

Steam if by far one of the best, sorry that you dont know how to use it. If you've been following Skyrim you would have known about the DL bug when installing from a disk.

So you have a problem with Steam being slow due to the autumn sales, and immediately it's the worst game service out there?

I can imagine it being annoying, but why do people always have to be so incredibly dramatic?

Some people just need a reason to complain/troll... if you are a pc gamer u should know better how to find a solution to your problem than make a topic in SW and complain about something that can be fixed in minutes, /Facepalm

Steam is awesome. Even the best services will have hiccups. Also you could have looked it up before you came in here babbling about it. No wonder you were having issues. worse comes to worst, disable your internet connection and the game should install from the disk, then re-enable it.

1. This isn't a a Steam problem, it probably has to do with your connection to their servers. Does your ISP cap your bandwidth? 2. You have the disc... why are you connecting with Steam? 3. I thought you were a cow who played nothing but MGS4... why are you playing Skyrim?

The retail disk automatically connects you to Steam. Even if you have a physical copy. Dawn of war is like that as well.

I like this because you can basically put your physical copy away for good. Even if you want to reinstall the game, you now have the option to just download it from Steam.

Think about it, a HUGE sale just started. A ton of people are buying, and to play it you need to DOWNLOAD IT. It eats up bandwidth, it happens with any content delivery service. Dont like it? Get a better internet.

Any Steamworks game works that way. That being said, you can still use the disk to install the base game and then download the updates afterwards through Steam.

Just delete "the local files" you started download then start setup from the disc and you should not be needed to download the game from steam. It can be wrong sometimes when after you enter your serial key and steam start download instead of install from disc.

I'm sorry you've experienced difficulties with Steam, but that doesn't give you license to make such ridiculous claims. Do you actually believe that Steam is anywhere near as bad as GFWLM? as Origin? You can't be serious. Steam is widely regarded as the best PC digital download service because of all the features it offers, it's consistently awesome sales, and the unintrusive nature of of it's presence, compared to pretty much any other modern DRM out there.

LOL WUT

This is a problem which is inherent to networking technology. More people downloading = less bandwidth = slower speed. You can't blame Steam for how networking technology works.

4 hours later, and I am still not playing this game; because of Steam. I cancelled my downloading (which would take 3-4 hours) to install via disk instead of DL, like several users have linked too...

But Steam hasn't been able to install for four fricken hours.

simple: you're downloading instead of using the install disc you own. you're depending on bandwidth when you could be playing the game already. it's not steam's fault if you don't know how to install a game.

Word up smart ass, I'm following the guide from here: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5357-FSQM-0382 and its not working because steam servers are full. Steam is sh**, don't blame me. I've been installing games since 1995, never had problems before.
