[QUOTE="jg4xchamp"][QUOTE="Vaasman"]I've got a ton I'd love to rip a new one.

Most recently Gone Home. Played that over the weekend and damn, it's overrated as hell.

Actually it is pretty decent, just nowhere near a 9.5. I have a lot of other games I could destroy if I wanted.

Vaasman

At this point...I can't give a shit about a score. At that point I'd be like TexasGoldRush: EVERYTHING IS OVERRATED...and that's not a fair way of judging a game. That's a by product of critics having some really low standards(I swear to you there was no way I could type that without it coming off douchy, so f*ck it). Admittedly I'm only saying that because I do want to try that game.

I don't really want to spoil much in case you ever do play it. There is a lot of stuff to like about Gone Home, like it's excellent atmosphere, light soundtrack, and attention to detail, especially in it's super high res textures and some side stories. However, it only lasts about 2 hours, maybe 3-4 if you search every item for every plot thread, it runs pretty poorly, and it's main story is just really bare bones with none of the complexity or emotional charge I've taken away from a lot of other story based games. It rides entirely on one bit of controversy that it doesn't do enough with.

Even if you don't listen to scores, a lot of reviews have said it's one of the best stories around, which I don't feel is true at all. I even like this kind of slice of life stuff, but part of life is taking unexpected turns, which this never does. It takes a ton of interesting points and regularly drops them as you progress.

Don't really care about length. I'd probably be more annoyed if the game was 4 hours, and I felt like it should have been 2 lol.

How does the plot flow with the gameplay/interaction? Does that work, or is that fundamentally flawed. Because Journey is a basic plot, but the appeal is how it's expressed. Same thing with something like Shadow of the Colossus.

[QUOTE="clyde46"]Whats wrong with GTA4?TheEroica
I struggled greatly with that game... played a good 25 hours before I just had to get real with myself that for the past 24 hours I was playing an extremely boring game with horrendous controls, aweful missions and characters I labored over trying to care about. I think it was a great "new gen" tech demo, but the game itself let me down like few others in gen7... I felt like it was a massive step backwards. That said, I have not played the expansions, but from most people's accounts they fix alot of things I took issues with.

I was the same way. It didn't seem like the past GTA's to me and thats what I wanted. The city was great but I got really bored fast. Hopefully GTA5 changes that.

I don't see where you guys are coming from. I'll give you the horrible controls on foot but everything was fine. The driving was top notch, the missions were fun and the characters were funny.

My larger issue with To The Moon is that as a plot it's more manipulative than well earned, and some of the dialogue is just overkill on internet humor. Oh and one too many leaps of faith with some of the decision making from the scientists. It has some sweet moments. I thought the stuff at the festival was cute. Ending is really well done. Lots of charm, good music. It's not that offensive.

Dear Esther bothers me way more because that narrative and that game aren't exactly put together in any meaningful way. You walk around, some dude talks. It doesn't really feel connected in any meaningful way. Journey does the whole you walk forward the videogame with symbolism through its imagery far better than that game did for me.

RDR's cool for the atmosphere and John Marston. Some misfires in the writing aside, they immortalized that character pretty well for me. Plus I liked those shooting animations all things considered. Killing a mother f*cker always looked neat. Oh and putting broads on train tracks is an awesome achievement/10

jg4xchamp

all great points... still havent played Esther.

Yeah, RDR was one of those games that I needed the wife to shut off and take my hand and lead me out of the room, because I couldnt do it myself... yep, kills are impactful, weapons (rifles in particular) feel good and the world, as I said, kinda shocked me at what I could do in an open world western setting. I found myself doing every hunting mission, every side quest, tracked down every horse (except the fvckin unicorn... never found her) and can't say I ever got to a point where I was tired of it...

Admittedly, it's been a while since I played the story, but I can't say there were story elements I found issue with.  I felt the ending was pretty weighty and impactful when it played out.  I know some people wanted to have more insight and connection to his life before the game started, but I kinda liked that his dasterdly past was left to imagination... Sometimes actually seeing those events and backstory makes it more difficult to paint the picture youre going for in the onset... dunno, but yeah RDR, to me is R*'s best effort in gen 7 for a couple more weeks anyway.

How did you play a videogame that does not exist?

Because Ninja Gaiden 3 never happened.

I was the same way with RDR. I could not get enough of that game when I played it and thinking back there have only been about a hand full of games like that for me in the 7th gen. The others being The Last of US, Far Cry 3, Saints Row 3, Portal 2, and Zero Escape: Virtues Last Reward. Whether it was the compelling story, gameplay, or characters these games had me hooked. Thats not something that has happened alot in gen 7, for me at least.

I agree... where the eff are the gameplay innovations? I probably sound ignorant in saying that as they do happen subtlety, but arent we ready for a renaissance of gameplay's importance? I am.

The casual market exploded. There's less incentive to make super deep and engrossing games when the new markets are shifting to games and players who won't spend the time getting invested.

Although honestly, I don't agree that those experiences are few and far between. They just aren't as prominent as they were back in the day.

yeah, I can see that for sure... I think there has been a mentality shift in development too, one that dictates emphasis on stylized narratives with gameplay being the "thing" that gets us from point A to B and if we're lucky to C.... I guess if I were given a live mic to tell a room full of devs something it would be to NOT follow hollywood. dont exhaust your resources only building set pieces and narrative while leaving gameplay as the go between... Gaming is an industry full of people who should be leading and showing off why our hobby can do SO MUCH MORE than anything else in entertainment. When we follow them it limits the hobby I think.

Never played Resort, but I will say that WiiSports is legit. obviously not the kind of game I want to play every day, but it works, it's engaging, it doesn't try and do what it cant, and fvck its fun... bold statement of the day (well not too bold) Wiisports did more to sell those 90+million consoles this past gen then any other first party nintendo game combined. yeah, I said it.

I wouldn't say the flow is fundamentally flawed, it just isn't doing anything that great or unique with it. Like it's obvious you're supposed to progress through the house in a relatively linear fashion, and the story divulges itself with that expectation, so I feel like it's diminishing the self discovery and your ability to come to your own conclusions. The biggest problem I have though are the parts of the story are told to you through voiced journal entries. The voiced stuff just feels really non-complex, just a lot of teen angst that doesn't really evolve into anything you don't expect. By maybe the 3rd or 4th room, I knew just about every plot point of the main story to a tee. There was some side stuff I didn't expect, but I didn't feel as invested in that stuff anyway.

Sounds like you let hype spoil you or had unrealistic expectations of it. I'm playing through it now and I'm quite liking it. It's refreshing to piece together a story myself instead of having every part of it forced in my face and there are really subtle things like the checklist for school where everything is crossed off except "positive attitude" which are really nice and easy to miss.

I've never seen a game be able to tell so much through environmental detail alone. Like even in the first few rooms you already get a feel for the entire family and what all their names are and what they do/have been doing.

Also you mentioned really good textures? :? Some of the textures are terrible and clash noticeably against others, a lot of reviews also remarked upon it

[QUOTE="slaves"]The sad thing is those experiences are/were so few and far between now. Back in the PSone and PS2 days almost every other game hooked you in like that. TheEroica
what do you attribute this to...? after all, we have much more capable hardware than we ever have before... why can't the experience consistently be amazing?

I don't think hardware has anything to do with it. Yes it makes our games look, sound and run better but that's not what makes the story or better yet the experience. I think games are pretty much suffering the same way movies are. Everything is a rehash or clone. It seems like no one can come up with original ideas anymore. Part of that is also "gamer" today are really jaded like devs owe them something. Go back and think of NES games such as Battletoads, Final Fantasy 1, Castlevaina 2, and Megaman. All those games are hard as hell, and very underwhelming graphicly by todays standards but I had some the best experiences playing them with my friends. To this day my all time favorite game is Drakengard on PS2. Ugly looking game now, gameplay is so what of a mess but that world and the cast of charaters that tell the dark story of one guy combining his life energy with the thing he hates the most, a dragon, to save the people he loves and the world just hooked me for life. That is one story I will never forget. I know we get great games all the time now. Even the worst game on the market this past gen and current are miles ahead of what we had back then but they just don't tell stories that often that get me emotionally hooked.

[QUOTE="Blabadon"]After getting annihilated by my niece in Wii Baseball (which is f*cking awesome), I want to hear, what's your favorite Wii Sport between Sports and Resort?TheEroica

Precise reason I love Wii Baseball is that it's reasonably deep. The amount of pitches, the power put into the pitches changing their speeds, batting actually being accurately tracked and doing a lot with where you hit...

My son and I played Table Tennis, bowling, and the sword game for hours when we bought resort. Table tennis is probably my fav.

It's all well and good the way the story is told, but the story being told just isn't that unique or compelling, and for 2-3 hours at 20 dollars, I do expect a bit more kick if that's all I'm getting. Not that I need a twist or to be torn emotionally, but I do like some fat to chew on once I'm done.

As for the textures, I was more referring to stuff like the posters and magazines around the house that you can zoom in on and they're all high res. There's even a set of those 3D illusion things in your sister's room, and they actually work if you zoom in on them.

I guess the price is a bit steep for what it is. i mean at least Dear Esther was only $10. But you said you didn't scrutinise all the details and skipped some side stuff and I imagine if the bang for buck thing is an issue for you then you should have made sure you got your moneys worth

Yeah those details are nice

I spent about 2 1/2 hours on it in total, and I'm pretty sure I hit just about every important plot point. I can't really see myself getting much more out of it by meticulously reading every note and searching every single nook.

Because games had to rely on gameplay rather than "TEH SHINEY!" is my 2 cents.

That's why Nintendo should never die, almost every Nintendo game I've ever played I've done so for gameplay and the level design, and "oh the graphics are quite nice too actually" always comes second.

Jesus, we're slow lately.

I work 40 hours a week and have multiple other things that require my time on a daily basis, all of which have nothing to do with System Wars. You'll excuse me if I'm not 100% up to date on what's going on at all times, Blabadouche.
