All joking aside - this looks great, and I'm glad to hear they shored up the combat, and introduced this new technical and puzzle-like design element. I've only played Paper Mario 64 - on Wii - and loved it. This'll go on my holiday gift list since my wife can get me one of those cute little cartridges

Regardless of how it compares to Samurai game. This might still be the first good Paper Mario game in a long time.

I look forward to hearing Paper Mario fans whinge about all the ways it's not like The Thousand Year Door, and therefore sucks.

@Maroxad: what was the best entry, in your opinion? 64 got me through some tough times - I was bedridden for a while from surgery and bought it on a whim. Played that and a loooot of Genesis games on my Nomad

Eh. Paper Mario is dead to me. Ever since Super Paper Mario the series has been in a rut of bland characters and gimmicky battle systems. If you’ve played Sticker Star, you will have played this “version” of Paper Mario three times now.

I now compare the series to the “New” Super Mario bros games. Those games are stuck in a void of bland and boring visuals and a single gimmick power up thrown in.

Mario has always been a cash cow for Nintendo but the franchise was never treated as such until recently. It’s a shame.

The best Paper Mario game in years, but the problem is they keep trying to reinvent the wheel instead of refining what already works *cough F-Zero cough*.

The wheel based combat system looks promising, but let's change it again on the next sequel.

My favourite Paper Mario game was The Thousand Year door. I didn’t play the other ones after it though. Not sure if this will replace TTYD for me but it does look like I will very much enjoy it nonetheless.

The only thing better than comparing Mario to GoT would be bringing up PSVR in a satirical thread comparing Mario to GoT.

I always find these comparisons weird as it will (generally) be a completely different set of reviewers with a different review count entirely.

Not to mention the wishy washy logic of exactly how the scores are accumulated and how the reviews are chosen.

If you were of a more cynical Alex Jones Inforwars.com mind, you might think Metacritic was deliberately designed to direct the flow of gaming rather than inform people.

More broadly, since I irked a few folks - what part of the title or any of the post looks like a remotely serious jibe at GoT? Seriously?

Just to clear the air: I don't believe at all in the merit of review scores, I don't believe in comparing games of different genres, I've posted numerous times about how I'm excited about both games. Feel free to look it up and fact check me on that.

Also for the record about "standards" - yes, a thread comparing a 7 and an 8 for "the big games" from two different platforms and declaring a victor is actually exactly what SW posts are supposed to be about. Too bad I don't care about that and wasn't serious...

F Paper Mario. Its a shallow, thin game compared to the first two and Nintendo does not care that this franchise has been ruined. Im not interested in Tsushima- but F Paper Mario and what it has become.

I don't know for sure since I haven't played the game yet, but a string of lower scores here over recent years tells me that they are uspet they aren't getting paid off anymore like more relevant sites.. lol.

Seriously though... Meta is the only thing I even kind of trust even a little bit and that's because it takes everything into consideration. The paid off, the salty non paid, the actual, and the haters. That said, I never let a review distinguish whether I buy a game or not. Some of my favorite games of all time haven't scored that high... to each their own I guess.

Very dissapointed. No RPG elements. Battles seem to be useless, so you'll probably just skip as many as you can. The ring puzzle crap in battles seem more annoying than fun.

Not getting this shit. Hopefully Nintendo will sometime realize what made PM fun.

As a huge fan of RPGs, I get the disappointment. Having said that, I don't think every game has to depend on level grinding. It can be refreshing to know I can simply avoid a battle when I don't have to depend on battling again and again to get stronger.

I'm hoping there are other incentives to participating in battles vs avoiding them to move through an area faster. Who knows? It could be a step in the right direction or a major annoyance. We won't really know until we play it for ourselves.
