Paramount's switch to go exclusive HD DVD has failed to turn the market in favor of that format and that Blu-ray continues to dominate the market with stronger studio support and sales volumes. If they can't get it done with the cheapest players and three of the biggest movies of the year in "Transformers" and "Shrek the Third" from Paramount/DreamWorks and "Bourne Ultimatum from Universal," that doesn't leave them many options.

I wonder how Microsoft/Toshiba are feeling about that $150 million investment, especially since Toshiba's earnings have taken such a hit. To date, Paramount's move to sole support of HD DVD has failed to turn the market, despite the HD DVD exclusivity of key titles 'Transformers' and 'Shrek the Third'. Notably, Blu-ray still represented over 70% of High Definition video sales in the USA during the week 'Transformers' was released on HD DVD.

Awesome. What was the % market penetration of HD players in the worldwide market again? Call me when this matters, like maybe next gen.

If you want to know something, here in Japan they don't have a single HD-DVD player for sale. Everyone claims this "war" is still going on but Japan has already decided on Blu-Ray. I still don't know why Americans think this is a big deal. :-\

I haven't seen a single HD-DVD player in Bic Camera, Yamadaka, or in Aki.

Didn't you read what I said? HD-DVD is dead here in Japan. There are no players for sale and Japan sure as hell won't switch formats because it's not working out in the Americas. How can HD-DVD win without the capital market in Asia?

Beta never got the higehr market in the States if I remember correctly. BD has the higher market in the world right now in every area. I don't think Japan would switch again. Considering BDs are still close to 6000円 a pop here, I don't think people will buy a replacement for HD-DVD.

Yes, we all know Americans are MUCH more advance than Japan in terms of HD content. Sorry, only over 70% of the popluation here owns HDTVs and it's government law to have 100% HD channels by 2009. Also, almost every house as fiber-optics for internet, over 30mb/s (standard), etc...

...yes, America is key for the current HD war because they are so far ahead in terms of HD technology. I'm sorry, didn't the CA dollar beat out the US dollar for the past 2 months?

You're probably right, I dont think Warner will side with HD-DVD. Im pretty sure warner will just pick Blu-Ray since they are still leading right now despite $150 HD dvd players and big movies like Transformers and Shrek 3 being exclusive to HD DVD.

I'm just addressing your point of a format winning without Japan, that it can and has happened. Are circumstances different? Sure... but that wasn't what you asked.

It doesn't matter, the longer these two fight...the more and more it looks like they will both tank.

DVD's slaughter both, and HD digital distribution is getting closer and closer...

Your sarcasm aside, if America is a more important market than Japan. If it went for HD-DVD, that format would win "globally" even if it was never adopted by Japan. Again, this has historical precedent with VHS vs. Beta. Which format sold more globally and "won?"

Now you are just going on about nothing, pretty much every country is making every channel have hd content by 2009. Not only that, despite what japan is doing they are only a small portion of the entire world.

I could see that happening but that would suck for those anime nerds in America. Having HD-DVD in America and Japan with Blu-Ray. To many people have paid to much, I believe people in America get BDs for half price and not the full tag like Japan pays. That's not very fun and I don't think people would change formats here. Sorry for sarcasm. It's 3.28 a.m. here.

Digital distribution hasn't made selling CD's obsolete it wont' do a thing for films. Heck people still prefer to walk into video stores instead of using Netflix. Goes to show people won't always use tech even if it more convenient. Their will be a hard disc HD movie format, no matter what MS tries to do with digital downloads. Blu-ray sells the most movies. Paramount is regretting their choice right now I bet.

Fox is owned by Rupert Murdoch. Not George W. Bush. Rupert is far more powerful and much moreevil than Bush and his administration.

But who cares...I love Family Guy, The Simpsons, X-Files, X-Men, and Star Wars.

most ppl dont' have a hd tv yet alone a player. therefore since most ppl dont' have it = anyone's game. i doubt neither will win because digital downloads will prob be good before everyone has a hdtvCrusher89

Considering that tons of people still use dial up. Digital downloads will be just as niche as the the discs are right now.

I don't understand this logic. Here in Japan, close to 70% has HDTVs and it's government law here to have 100% HD signals by 2009. I know America has the same law. I also know America has really slow internet. Asia and Europe has fiber-optics as the standard. How can digital HD downloads beat a physical medium in America when most Americans can't even download the files? You still need a HD setup to run it, so you're going to be paying the money for TV and sound system.

There is no way that digital downloads can beat the physical standard currently. I get 30mb/s on my fiber and it's still slow at time with the things I download. I'm sorry if I sound mean, not trying to. I just don't see how HD digital downloads could beat out a physical format right now, and in America it's even less of a chance due to internet speed there.

Both BR and HD-DVD is failing, so why should anyone care which one beats the other.

you must really hate the united states, japan's cool and all, but for me (and millions others) the us is a hundred times better.... plus just because japans is ahead right now on the technology curve doesn't mean it has any real power in the world. the fact still stands that america has the largest and most prosperous economy in the world, so what they and the rest of north america says most often goes. plus you make its sound like there everyone is a farmer. FYI internet speed is great and varies with each individual on the earth so that make your claim invalid.... the us is just plain ausome and imo (and many others) just better than japan.:? I dont know what your problem is with it, but take it away from system wars please.

how do you know america has slow internet? you realize in america your free to have whatever internet you like, slow fast medium, whatever. I dont know if internet in government mandated in japan or something, but its just foolish to make general claims about a global service ( invented by the U.S government mind you) regareding the internet speed of users in a country where nearly everyone has internet and I would say 80 to 90% decently fast internet. I just dont understand how the internet of all things can be slow in one country and fast in another.... your logic is confusing:|

I've been all over the world and I've never experienced internet faster than what I got in New York.

Yeah except for the fact that BR is not failing.
