Lets see here in 2017, I bought a 1tb SSD, a 2tb SSHD, GTX 1080 and then got an i7 8700. I think im good for while.

Need me one of those Coffee Lakes... Tired of these damn quad cores in my case!
I tell you what between the upgrade from i5 4690k and moving away from DDR3 1600mhz my GTX 1080 has been unleashed fully.
Bought
- I5 6500
- 8gb ddr 4 2133 mhz ram,
- gigabyte h110m-h
- Msi gtx 970 gaming
- oculus rift touch bundle.
- antec gx 500
- antec high current gamer 620 w
So yeah you could say I bought pretty much an complete new system, apart from that harddrive, keyboard and mouse.
I know it's only a mediocre system, but the main purpose of the system is vr, it's not even setup in my mancave but in my vr room, and is only used for vr.
Bought some other stuff as well for that vr setup, like extension cables, pull key chains, even a dog leash (which I don't use because it wasn't strong enough). Bought a razer hydra and an oculus dk2 this year asl well, but I could sell them pretty much with no loss.

Yeah... Just not at 4K which is the main reason why I am holding off upgrading, if I had a 144Hz 1440p screen I would jump all over it.
The jump from i5 6600k to i7 8700k was a huge jump difference in my case. Totally well worth upgrading and the only reason why I'm upgrading is so I can start gaming on Twitch, so I needed more cores and faster CPU to do so. Plus, I game in 1440p anyways.
Havn't really upgraded since 2015, i7 and 970 GTX currently.
Waiting for the volta 1180 or 2080 (whatever they choose to name it) and thinking of saving for the new ASUS Ultra Wide 35' 200hz, g-sync, HDR 1440p monitor ..... not sure yet.
You're gonna get a 35 foot monitor :p

Having an entire cinema screen to game on, now we're talking :)
Upgraded to i5 7600K, & GTX1070 last year not looking to add anything for a long time...other than maybe change to m2 drive.. or a bigger size SSD. :P

Does RAM speed really make a difference in gaming?

Barely.
Hmm I bought a 1080ti instead of buying a new PC, because I found out that for the first time ever, my GPU was the only thing really aging and it was hindering my VR experience. I hope to get at least 2 more years out of this build at very high settings 2k. (i7 4970k) End 2019 I may order a cute new PC, but I'll need to save up first :)
Maybe if I take good care of my clothes I won't need to buy new ones next year and it could be a real epic cute PC.

It depends on the hardware used and game..... it can make a huge difference. For example Rise of the Tomb Raider on a system with i7 7700k with 1080ti using 1080p with ddr4 2133mhz got 86min/162avg while with ddr4 3200mhz got 104min/184avg. Quite a few games see a sizeable gain with minimum framerates going from 2133 to 3000+ with upper end hardware. Alot of games do not care about ram speed but when your ram bottlenecks upper ended gpu's it can make a difference since the lack of bandwidth to feed the cpu and gpu fluidly causes things to idle. Trust me DDR3 1600mhz was bottlenecking the crap out my GTX 1080.
I attempted to delid my current setup and basically screwed up my CPU (or motherboard, honestly can't figure out which) so I'm now gonna get myself a skylake build.
my pc is upgraded to the point where it's basically just a new pc
I even got a crazy case to put it all in
So after some minor modifications to the case, I got the 1080Ti to fit. The performance difference between the 1080 and 1080Ti is staggering. And I'm 100% against blower style GPUs now. This open-air cooled card runs waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay quieter and a little cooler than the blower 1080 I had in it. The CPU and mobo only run 2-5 degrees warmer as a result. The internet led me wrong again!
2018 is the year I upgrade. This rig has been pretty nice to me and it is 4+ years old (the core components), but I am ready for the "next jump", which right now would be a 4K monitor with HDR (real HDR).
I hope to see the Geforce 1180 (or whatever they're going to call it) before the first half, and we will see what Intel has to offer. I'd also like to watercool my rig for the first time, build a custom loop myself. Seems like a neat hobby. I'd probably start from the ground up, too, so I'd have a backup computer. All new, fresh components.
And maybe, juuuuuuuuuuuuust maybe, I might get a VR set up. We will see what the new HTC Vive "2.0" has in for us; wireless headset and a resolution at double what it is now seems pretty sweet.
@goldenelementxl: am I going crazy or did you fit an impossibly large amount of components into an incredibly small case?
*What is that, some sort of 90-degree adapter so you can lay your GPU flat?

You're going to look real stupid when APUs come along and make your CPU and GPU obsolete!
@drlostrib: Lol. Yeah within the next 5-7 years an APU should come along to put this build to shame. It’s too bad I’m gonna be stuck with these old ass parts...
@mrbojangles25: Yes. The case is slightly larger than an Xbox One. (OG). The GPU adapter came with the case, the node 202. The motherboard is a mitx form factor which is crazy small.
Some additions to my existing rig, a 256GB M.2 SSD and a 43" LG monitor (for productivity, non-gaming).
TBH I think I'll be laying low in 2018 and bide my time for 2019 (plus spare my wallet). I love a lot of the things coming out of CES but I'm not prepared to fork over the premium the new stuff will require.
Planning on building ryzen 1800x/gtx 1070 or 1080 depends on the price of the thing in 2 or 3 months!!!
Currently running a xeon e3 1230 based with a 970 and Fx 8350 with 290x
Have an msi I7 6700 based laptop with an 960m and not planning to upgrade or change it anytime soon.
lol
I've got an AMD X6 1100T with an HD 6970 and 16 gigs of DDR3 Ram.
During the PS3 and 360 Era it was awesome! But I've completely lost interest in using it as a gaming PC and now I just use it for video editing. And for 1080p and 720p it still does great.
So I won't upgrade until 4k becomes more main stream in TV and Sports. (What I edit for work)
Nope, still on my build from 2016. I finally dumped my 3700k and 980ti when the GTX 1080 was launched and built a Skylake system (i7 6700k, Asus ROG Maximum Impact V8 mobo, 32G DDR4, 1TB and 500GB SSD, 850w EVGA gold PSU). All I did last year was add a larger radiator and added the 1080 to my waterloop with an EK full coverage block. Felt that was enough to last me for some time. My monitor is a curved 34" ultrawide 3440x1440 but only at 60hz so I can run most games just fine with the 1080 in ultra with a capped 60FPS using rivatuner.

Good to know, I'm running 1600 Mhz ddr3 with a gtx 1080 right now. I think this is the year where I finally put my i7 970 to rest.
Entire build in the end.

I upgraded my SSD, RAM, bought a new 4K monitor, and a new joystick. I don't plan to upgrade anything in 2018 but let's see how things go.
I won't be upgrading my graphics card till probably 2019. I'm very happy with my GTX 1070's performance.
Ah, how come you needed to upgrade your SSD. What it because of capacity or performance? I just ask because I couldn't imagine an SSD with noticably poor performance.
Bought
- I5 6500
- 8gb ddr 4 2133 mhz ram,

yeah bought it second handed for 180 euro's, a gtx 1070 was then 500 euro's, a gtx 1060 6 gb 350 euro's (the cheap ones), and amd card were everywhere sold out with the bitcoin craze.

I did that once. I thought a 120GB or 128GB SSD was enough. I have 250GB ones now.

not really an official price, it's not sold anymore in retail. Second handed you won't find it much cheaper than 300 though

Well it makes sense, it has very similer performance to a GTX 1060.
