I built a computer, and I must say, PC Gaming is not impressive at all. What was all the hooplah about? Even the graphics (Crysis) which are so highly touted are hardly better than consoles.

That's funny, because I've never found console gaming impressive, just passable, "meh".
ninjakamster1
You must not have a flat screen over 50" and Surround Sound capable of Lossless Audio.
Console Gaming is much better.
You got to love fanboy logic.
If one version is running at 600p instead of 720p; then it is epic ownage. But if someone shows the game running at 1080p with 16x AF and 4x AA, plus any PC specific enhancements, then it's not impressive.
Oh and by the way, PC is too expensive but paying more for a PS3 instead of a Blu-ray player is justified; because "you get what you pay for".
"hardly better than consoles" lolwut?
Better is purely opinion. Just because you don't prefer it doesn't mean other people don't. I personally like PC gaming more, however I still enjoy playing the consoles.
lundy86_4
I meant the graphics, which is borderline between opinion and truth.

IMHO, the graphics are not miles beyond that of the consoles. They tend to be a little sharper compared to the consoles due to higher resolution and some of the games have some eye candy that the consoles don't have, but for the most part you'd have to know to look for them to see them in the first place.
So, yeah the PC has better graphics, but it's not by a vast amount. Does that make the PC unimpressive? That's ultimately a personal opinion. The main draw of the PC for me is no the graphics but the diversity of games. There are far more genres and game types, far more surprising and different titles.

I know you meant graphics. One set of systems runs games at 720p, or 1080p with less to render, whereas one system runs at upwards of 720p and can include 2560x1600 with AA and AF turned up. Graphics are clearly better, however that does not detract from what the consoles are capable of. Consoles can output excellent graphics, whereas PC can output phenominal graphics.

30", 40", 50", 60" etc. it's all the same.
You are still staring at a 1280x720 resolution image, bigger screens just mean you can sit back further. I wouldn't want to sit up to one close, widely spaced pixels and image stretching cannot be pretty.
I'd rather have a screen the correct size for the number of pixels on screen, you get much better image clarity.

It's all relative, sitting 2 feet away from a 1680x1050 screen makes each pixel appear the same size as the pixels from a 60" screen sitting 9 feet away from a 1080p screen.

clearly you have never played console games, because they self correct for big screen TVs and look flawless in all resolutions :lol:dang, i was so close with predicting what TC would say :/
What's with all the random PC hate lately. Since I've been on this board PC is almost never mentioned except in graphics, and now suddenly there have been 6-7 topics in the past few days about how pc gaming sucks, has no exclusives, is too difficult, costs too much. None of which are true... I mean was there some console fan convention recently that I missed where everyone decided to gang up on PC?

TC, not looking to bash, just interested, but what are the specs of your computer?

Stick your face up to a large HDTV and then do the same with a monitor, the pixels on a TV are much more widely spaced than on a PC monitor.
If you buy a 1080p TV it doesn't matter if it is 30" or 60", it still has 1920x1080 pixels on screen, they are just spaced further apart. Televisions are designed to be viewed at a distance, get too close the image quality is terrible.
With consoles you have a 720p image regardless of the size of the TV screen, bigger screens means the image is stretched more.

All in all a very solid and capable computer. You should look at picking up games like Metro 2033, Stalker: CoP and Bad Company 2 which all use DX11 nicely.
They all look fantastic too.

DX9 isn't bad, but to see Crysis at it's best you really need a DX10 card (and have Vista or above to even get DX10).
Also if you did turn up all the settings to the highest possible you would have brought a DX9 card to it's knees. Your story is starting to not add up now.

He supposedly bought a 5870 which makes no sense because why would you buy a 5870 unless you were sure you wanted to play pc games?I agree, PC gaming is not impressive...now, relax, let me explain why i think that.
Sure, the graphics are above everything else, and i say, that is quite impressive...then again when it comes to the actual game is not impressive, now, i'm not saying is a bad gaming device, because is not, i'm a huge RTS fan and i love StarCraft with passion, but my point is, that unlike what some Hermits try to "prove" the PC is not the almighty device with games so good and out of this wrorld that an ordinary human mind can't understand, i say PC gaming is as good as the Console gaming.
So the 5870 is a DX9 card? Is the GTX 470 a DX10 card? and the GTX 480 a DX11 card?
Should I have bought the GTX 480 to truly see the difference between console and PC gaming?
That's nice and all, but the differences just aren't noticable IRL
GioVela2010
I disagree, significantly. You cannot stretch a image several times its original size and only get minor impact on image quality. Maybe if you are sat across the room you won't notice.
Either way it is just a difference in opinion, I just don't see how yours can be honest.

Nope, you can see all "dx10" effects in dx9 mode on dx9 card (with super poor performance of course), all you need to do is to open notepad and change some cfg files ;)I agree, PC gaming is not impressive...now, relax, let me explain why i think that.

Pretty much. The whole thing is just opinionated at the end of the day. There are things PC does better than consoles, obviously. However if a person isn't looking for thos features, and the games don't appeal, obviously it's not the system for them.
Nope, the 5870 is a DX11 card. Or in other words, you got one of the best cards on the market, it's a solid card for gaming :)So the 5870 is a DX9 card? Is the GTX 470 a DX10 card? and the GTX 480 a DX11 card?

I do, and it's not very impressive when you can do the same with or better with a PC. What really turns me off about console is the lack of native 1080 resolution and imagine filtering, the sound is great, but between lossless audio and compressed, some games you just can't tell... unless you have a crappy PC sounds system.
considering that TC doesn't even know what DX9-10-11 is I'm going to assume that is beyond his skill level.[QUOTE="Vaasman"]

not by a longshot.......the PC games library is far superior, especially those PC games made from 1997 - 2000, games that were made for PC first, and not dumbed-down for lesser consoles.
Then again, i guess those games won't satisfy a graphics-nut.

Why it was superior?
Because in my humble opinion, no PC game from that time can surpass my dear old OoT, not even StarCraft or Half Life.
