Use the right tool for the right job. Joypads for racers, fighters, or another game requiring a sensitive touch; everything else on a keyboard and mouse. Personally, I could use a keyboard and mouse for hours on end without problems, but should one arise, I can always plug my 360 or PS3 controller in.

Mouse is hand's down superior for aiming, although analog sticks are better for basic movements (The movement governed by the WASD keys on PC). But the keyboard wins for the amount of buttons, which allow for more hotkeys and just more finesse in most genres.

More buttons means more options and easier in-game chat. So yeah. Bye.

Starcraft and Starcraft 2 is 'whats with the keyboard' and is 'what's not with the controller'.

Controllers are great and I have 2 wireless 360 pads for my PC - so I can play racing games, fighting gamesand casual titles that don't require great speed or accuracy. They are rubbish for shooters, RTS, MMO and many other great genres that have always been best on PC, with PC controls.

[QUOTE="Crossel777"]

[QUOTE="kipohippo021"]but the console players are not pitted against the pc players. So it dosent matter. It just makes pc people more aware of their surroundings.

DarthBilf

Game controllers exist on the PC to, much betters ones for that matter. They still can't hold their own to the mouse and keyboard. Consoles could use M&K but seeing as how their overrun with casuals now they will never get taken advantage of. All console gamers want is ease of use over indepth control. Well don't worry. Kinect is on it's way. All you gotta do is stand and arm flail. So much fun.

Sorry that I like to be comfortable while I play video games. I'm sure you are very proud that you can turn slightly faster in games than I can.

Unfortunately for you it brings much more than faster turning, including entire genres of classic games that consoles simply can't hope to replicate. However, that poster was just being harsh towards console gamers. In the end the pad is nice sometimes and others it's the KB&M combo - fact is that the PC does both and the console doesn't :(.

So you're saying a gaming keyboard isn't made for gaming?

Keyboards have been around for years, but they've been adapted very well as a gaming device. My Razer Lycosa is incredibly comfortable for my gaming needs.

I have a belief console gamers try to ignore that quake on the dreamcast ever existed and feature crossplatform play agaisnt pc gamers. Which ended in a 1 way slaughterfest.

basically if PC players were to be pitted against console gamers in an fps it would be this

I prefer mouse and keyboard for FPS, RTS, MMORPG's, and RPG's like Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age, Neverwinter Nights. Controller for everything else. The reason I prefer Keyboard and Mouse for FPS games is because of the accuracy and the speed in which you're able to turn your character. FPS on console just feels so slow, clunky, and inaccurate compared to keyboard and mouse on the PC. I also in general enjoy the input options and customization that both the mouse and keyboard provide.

I disagree with being designed poorly. Games like ARMA require numerous commands, and as such a keyboard is a necessity. If you have a lot of commands, then a keyboard is perfect.

or perhaps the game was designet to be complex? There is a world of difference between complex and poorly made.

And I really do prefer games to be more complex, granted 100 buttens would be in the area of some sims (mechwarrior says hello) Still those are not poorly made, but rather complex, with far greater possabilities.

No game on pc utilizes all keys on the keyboard. Don't be a fool. There are however, games with far more depth than anything on the console to where they require more input than a simple gamepad can offer. In no way does that mean the game was designed "poorly".

Adding more buttons does not make the game feel anymore real. making a game so complex that you need a massive amount of buttons would have a huge learning curve. i dont see how having more buttons makes a game have "far more depth" i have played a flight sims pretty much the whole keyboard was used for it . took a long time to learn witch made it frusterating. games controls should be stream lined. i dont see why hermits love making games much harder then they have to be.

Due simulators are a genre that only exist on PC. And things in the real life aren't always easy. Deal with it.

You don´t streamline a simulator,because when you do that it´s not a simulator anymore,it´s just a game.

The point of a sim is just that,those flight sims you played used the whole(or most) keyboard because they usually have the same functions of the real life planes.

The point is having you do all those things manually,like in real life.

No, a TV/DVD player remote is far more complex than a console game's controls.

Only thing keyboard needs is a analog stick because its better at movement then the arrow keys (analog stick = 360* of movement and its not just on or off (you can adjust the speed of movment in each direction) In combo with a mouse its one of the best control schemes.

So you think simulators should be dumbe down, thus not be similuators at all, right?

You know, there is a reason why console flight gamesare defined by simplistic arcade game that AceCombat is, one that makes no pretenses at being realistic, while PC flight games are dominated by the lies of Black Shark or Falcon 4.0

More keys is always good, especially when they're fully customizable. I'll survive with a pad too but I hate if I for e.g. have to press the analogue stick down to sprint or something just because they ran out of real buttons.

Its better for fsp/tps surprisingly i had always thought analog would provide better movement but in fps games after playing them with controller i found keyboard is better for the following reasons. Since you can multitask better for example on a controller to jump or change a weapon you have to take your thumb off the analog stick to do these things with keyboard and mouse you can do them simultaneously while continuing to move and shoot since once hand controls movement and the other shooting. I also find it better for movement since on a controller when you want to chance directions you have to move that analog it all the way to the left or right with the keyboard you have 3 fingers on movement so changes in directions are much faster. I also feel the "advantage" of being able to move at different speeds depending on how far you tilt the analog is utterly useless in a fps. The keyboard constant speed absolute directional movement is better in fps I fell I can control better and move more accurately in a shooter like in l4d2 when fighting a tank and your running and shooting backward with a controller i'll get stuck on stuff and can't quite move where i want to. I think the fact that i can't see my entire character is why i feel this way the second you pull the camera far back in third person like devil may cry 4 or prince of persia analog is defiantly better for movement since i can see the entire character and the greater range of motion becomes a welcome advantage.

Most genres are pretty either pretty decent (racing/sports/platformers) or simply outstanding (RTS/MMOs/FPS/RPGs/Military Simulation Games) with the keyboard. In fact, for some genres dominant on the PC scene, the keyboard/mouse combo is a MUST. You'll be slaughtered otherwise competitively (RTS/MMORPGS/Shooters). A lot of us actually use the gamepads if we prefer it, for other genres though. But for most PC gamers, the keyboard/mouse combo is generally enough most of the time.

I don't mind it for strategy games and the like but I really dislike using WASD for movement, it's horrible when used to an analogue stick imo.locopatho

Try practicing, then.

You DO NOT only use the keyboard for movement. You're supposed to be using it in conjunction with the mouse to fine-tune your direction, which gives you precision in your movement that analogue sticks just don't offer.

Sure, you can't adjust your movement speed beyond "stop, walk, run", but when is anything beyond that ever even necessary in a shooter? Being able to change to the opposite direction without first having to re-center a mechanical movement stick is also something that people often overlook.

Just because you can't grasp the complexities of certain games does it mean they are poorly made. If I were to say, console games are way too simplified because the developers simply had no talent, vision or creativity, i'm pretty sure you would vehemently be against that notion. But stop right there and think for a minute coz thats essentially what you are saying.

You're so wrong. My flight sims have in excess of 300 individual commands, almost three times as many keys as on a keyboard. I have to resort to key combos (ALT+CTRL+G to raise landing gear, for instance) in order for them to all fit.

On pc you end up with a more tactical approach and on consoles, you can just run and gun. So pc users are not used to the sensetivity settings on a controller. On top of that the keyboard and mouse hurt your hands. Controllers just fit like a glove.

I've been gaming since I was 8, and that counts for 22 years of gaming up to date, needless to say, PC gaming has always been a part of my routine. In all those years I never, ever did hurt my hands while playing, therefore, there are only four logical options here.

A. You don't know what you're talking about;

B. You're doing keyboard + mouse wrong (Probable);

C. You're just a silly fanboy willing to say that consoles are teh kingz;

D. You have sensible hands.

Whatever option is true, I do not really care... have fun with your games, and let those who like PC gaming and their keyboards have theirs.

On a side note, on PC you can be tactical, for sure, but it can be crazingly fast paced with running and gunning on FPSs. PC "platform" is like that, it DOES do everything...

[QUOTE="Diviniuz"]Shooters are better on the keyboard/mouse I agree that some genres aren't but not a lot. Maybe you are not used to gaming on itkipohippo021

Explain. Controllers are specially made for those types of games. A keyboard was originally designed for ... typing. On consoles its more like you have two mouses as far as control goes. The up/down/left/right buttons really imo hurt the controls.

Umm.. most games were made with a keyboard and mouse in mind. Look at all the FPS games that were on PC first.

i like the mouse for rts and fps. i dislike the keyboard for any game. any game that needs 100s of buttons was designed poorly .

I play flight sims all the time and all this 'memorizing' is nothing. Unless you're the type of person who has to look at the keyboard as you type, it shouldn't be an issue. If a command uses the M button, I don't have to think where M is, my fingers know by themselves. It's called Muscle Memory. It's the same way people use controllers without thinking about what button to push.

I can hit any three-key combo on the keyboard without having to think about it. It's not that difficult.

It's just the best way to play after you get used to it. Personally, I can't play with controllers, I think they're terrible.

On pc you end up with a more tactical approach and on consoles, you can just run and gun. So pc users are not used to the sensetivity settings on a controller. On top of that the keyboard and mouse hurt your hands. Controllers just fit like a glove.

Okay, i wasnt saying one was superior. I asked WHY pc people prefer the keyboard. Imo yes, consoles are king. They were made for gaming while computers were made to calculate a nuclear strike back in ww2. Now they do everything but are not specifically designed for gaming unless you do it yourself. In the end, the consoles will win on sales because of simplicity. So in a business point of view, consoles are better. But it all comes down to prefrence.

This is all so silly. The keyboard was made for HANDS and FINGERS, and that's what most people use to play video games.

Ive played games on my computer but, i dont get why you would like a keyboard over a controller. All it has is more buttons, its so clunky and its not made for gaming. A controller is. Now, some games like mmorpg's and rts's are better on a keyboard. But imo all other games arent. So whats witht the keyboard?

kipohippo021

It's mostly the mouse that does the trick, as it undeniably provides far superior precision and maneuvering speed in genres such as FPS and racing. The keyboard is a tool for navigation, and as it has a lot of buttons, it comes in handy for hotkeys and a vast variety of specific actions. How comfortable it is mostly depends on how the buttons are mapped, which is luckily fully customisable in nearly every game.

Oh, and a keyboard might not be designed for gaming, but PC games are designed for the keyboard and mouse, so that basically comes down to the same thing. Besides, there are plenty of special keyboards that are designed with gaming in mind.

The guy thinks using arrow keys is superior to WASD layout. Don't even bother with him. He wouldn't understand.

Customizability. Don't like using WASD for controlling your player character? Switch it to up/down/left/right, or YGHJ, or whatever you might desire.

Oh yes, and all PC's can use gamepads, and with a little work, most PC's can use not only the 360 wireless gamepad, but the Dualshock 3, Wiimote/Nunchuck and probably soon, both Move and Kinect.

The only real console that ever got a full-blown keyboard that worked with games (AFAIK) is the Dreamcast. It may be clunky when you start with it, but it is far superior in everything except perhaps the analogue stick.

And you where told various times WHY... customization, better control method (personal opinions, allways), it's feels better for certain types of games (FPS). Going further onto the thread and insisting on your hurt hands was unnecessary than, since you already knew your answer.

I don't know if I fully grasp what you intended to say in: "are not specifically designed for gaming unless you do it yourself.". You may either mean hardware, so yes, you might design a proper gaming PC rig for gaming, what ain't that hard at all, many companies already make budles specifically for gaming (You just need the patience to search for one that suits you, much like you search for the best offer on consoles). If you meant software... well, whatever, game devs do that work, not the gamer (unless you intend to make a mod...).

Win on sales? LOL. Really? You get a share of that in order to be worried about how much other people will gain on this business? OH! and yes, simplicity... simple minds, simple consoles, simple games... I see the Wii on that statement and shudder on the thought.

"...consoles are better. But it all comes down to prefrence." Agreed, it's your preference, for you they're better.

Have a nice day dude.
