No game on pc utilizes all keys on the keyboard. br0kenrabbit

You're so wrong. My flight sims have in excess of 300 individual commands, almost three times as many keys as on a keyboard. I have to resort to key combos (ALT+CTRL+G to raise landing gear, for instance) in order for them to all fit.

I haven't played a simulator my entire time gaming. So I don't know about their keybind requirements. That still doesn't mean they're poorly designed just because they use a ton of keys like the poster I quoted said. It's part of the genre. If those controls were streamlined like the other poster said leads to good design, then it wouldn't be a sim anymore.

The only con I can think of is that the buttons aren't pressure sensative. Other than that, I love keyboards.

LOL consolites arguing that controllers are superior, when all the fps games feature autoaim. The genre I can think of a where a controller is better is a racing game.

Depends on the software. Some games have pressure sensitive inputs, while others don't.

Then you obviously aren't thinking hard enough. Racing, hacknslash, platformers, fighters, sports, and third person shooters with driving sections (Mafia 2, GTA4, ect) are all superior on consoles thanks to the controller.

Yeah, because you can't use controllers, wheels, and arcade sticks on the PC.

Oh wait.

Actually, you can often use the console versions of these devices with the PC. I have an Xbox 360 controller and an Xbox 360 arcade stick (HRAP EX) hooked up to my machine right now :|

You're given far more control over how these input devices work on a PC, too.

Besides: platformers, "hack'n'slash", and sports games are not valid as being "better" with a gamepad/controller. The optimal control method is really determined by game design. It's a bit more clear with fighting games and racers..gamepads are definitely better than the KB/M there, though going from KB/M to a controller with those genres is just going from "bad" to "not as bad, but still bad." There are much better input methods for those genres...

I agree, but I was disagreeing that no PC game uses the whole keyboard. There are many that do, not even just simulators.

I can drive the cars in GTA4 much better with a keyboard and using the mouse to look around the corners before i turn that on a controller.

If there is free control of the camera a mouse is better for me.

The keyboard doesn't really matter, its the mouse that matters. My keyboard cost £3 and its the same as any other in how it responds in games.

[QUOTE="locopatho"]I don't mind it for strategy games and the like but I really dislike using WASD for movement, it's horrible when used to an analogue stick imo.Velocitas8

Try practicing, then.

You DO NOT only use the keyboard for movement. You're supposed to be using it in conjunction with the mouse to fine-tune your direction, which gives you precision in your movement that analogue sticks just don't offer.

Sure, you can't adjust your movement speed beyond "stop, walk, run", but when is anything beyond that ever even necessary in a shooter? Being able to change to the opposite direction without first having to re-center a mechanical movement stick is also something that people often overlook.

Yeah thats another thing movement in fps is directly related to where you facing so the more precise mouse does play a role in how you move not just the keyboard.

[QUOTE="kipohippo021"] Explain. Controllers are specially made for those types of games. A keyboard was originally designed for ... typing. On consoles its more like you have two mouses as far as control goes. The up/down/left/right buttons really imo hurt the controls.

kipohippo021

Actually FPS were specifically designed for the keyboard. Not the controller was designed for fps. lol

But controllers of today were. The only reason the mouse is good is because using a "mouse" on a console is torture. You can go across the screen fast and easy with the mouse.

The closest a controller has gotten to being designed with FPS's in mind is the Wii remote/nunchuk, and the reason is because it's the controller that most resembles the mouse/kb!

Dude, controllers of today are essentially the same as the Dual Shock 1, and that was 12 years ago, so no, controllers of today are NOT designed for the FPS, the console FPS has to be designed/limited/shoehorned into a dual-analog control scheme, otherwise they wouldn't all have aim-assist and whatnot.

Keyboards are better, I can't rationalize how anyone could disagree.

Mouse/WASD>>>>Joystick

Keyboard keys>>>>Buttons on controllers.

No radial menus, no awkward multiple button combination (Hold LT then press RT to cast a fireball) easier weapon select, mouse aiming makes controller aiming a joke, having a cursor for menus is godlike compared to consoles.

What is superior about a console controller? They feel better? I do not know.

Now, I don't think console controllers are some clunky weird alien technology that sucks the fun out of games, quite the contrary actually, I love console games and the controllers work perfectly fine, but comparing a controller to M/KB is laughable.

The keyboard (and mouse by extension) are simply amazing at certain genres. A controller by contrast is passable for many types of games, but rarely the best. A fight stick is much better for fighters, a wheel is better for racers, kb/m is better for fps/rts. Current generation controllers were designed for gaming in general which is both a strength and a weakness.

no the controller was made for racers, fighting and platform games, they just heavily reduced the functions in fps so they could work with a controller. Controllers have not really changed since the dual analog ps1 controller.

Ok they have added vibration and triggers but the rest is no difference and the trigger add nothing to shooters over a digital button. Tell me how the x360 controller is different from this heck even the sticks look the same, only thing that has changed in controllers since 1997 that has lasted is swapping the dpad and left stick around everything else is the same and these were not made for shooters that require you to aim.

While in the same time keyboards have got much easier to push buttons and some have lots of hotkeys, and then there is the mouse which now has at least 5 buttons if your into gaming and can have 7 or more buttons all just as easy to reach as any gamepad buttons.

exactly the controller is the perfect compromise for all type of games, k/m is miles better for shooters while a wheel is miles better for a racing sim. k/m sucks at racing games while the controller is pretty good.

Racing = Agree Hack N Slash = 50/50 even games like Assassins Creed and DMC4 use the mouse/keyboard very well. Fighters = Agree Sports = Depending on the sport 50/50 Third Person shooters = disagree, I hate idiots that think TPS better on controller WHEN THEY CONTROL IDENTICAL TO A FPS GAME JUST WITH A DIFFERENT CAMERA! Driving Sections = barely noticable.

He means games like DMC and NG though for which there really is no comparison and game pads win. Both have their advantages with out doubt. For anybody that thinks they couldn't remember all of the assigned keys in a game like arma you aren't giving yourself enough credit, you would be suprised how quicly you can adjust and remember what ever key is assigned to especially since a lot of games use similar layouts.

I dont know, i only like MMO's on pc. I was playing mercaneries 2, it doesnt tell you which buttons to press, it has pictures. And i had a picture of two arrows pointing upwards below feet. I actually tried EVERY SINGLE one of the buttons that actually done something (including spacebar) and i had no idea what to do.

I find it really funny how pc gamers say about how realistic and hardcore the games are, but one of the reasons they like it is because you can do a 360 turn in less than half a second :P

Ive played games on my computer but, i dont get why you would like a keyboard over a controller. All it has is more buttons, its so clunky and its not made for gaming. A controller is. Now, some games like mmorpg's and rts's are better on a keyboard. But imo all other games arent. So whats witht the keyboard?

I would never cheap out on your keyboard. Using a bad keyboard is like using a Mad Catz controller... yeah the button presses work, but there's no joy in them. You use a good keyboard and I guarantee you'll never go back.
