Ok have an idea, controversial, but it will work.

You install your game on the PC as usual, but it doesn't have all the files. certain key files (dll files) are on a server. So in order to play the game needs to load the files from a server on the internet. You can't pirate the game as pirates won't get their hands on these files.

However it does mean you have to always be online to play the game, and can not play it offline. But considering the broadband penetration you'll still have a fair chunk of people who can play your game.

What they could do is a year after release, release a patch so you can play offline.

What do ya think.

judging by the response to the Mass Effect DRM, it won't be popular at all.

That is a bad idea because not everyone has fast internet or they don't have it at all. My best solution for piracy is that they should have better encryption for their discs because current games are hacked as hell.

it is the only option as far as i can tell that is full proof, and yes you will lose out on a large potential market share. but would be interesting to see a game like crysis do it and see how their sale figures compare.

You cannot stop piracy.

It will always be there.

Instead dont cater to the people who are going to pirate your game, give people reasons to buy your game.

All games are pirated, on all systems. Even things like Steam are completely futile at stopping pirates.

What will happen is the pirates will buy a copy, download the other dlls, and create a standalone "preinstalled" release of the game for other pirates to enjoy. Meanwhile the Legit Customer is getting horribly pissed off because the download servers are swamped and its going to take 6 hours to get the dlls and then his connection drops after 4 hours and he has to start all over again.

Hurray, another DRM solution where the real buyers get raped and the pirates dont have to bother with it.

Also, sue the leakers. Like Ubisoft is now suing the disk dupilcators for Assassin's Creed PC.

dll's are usually MASSIVE files, like DX is a dll, thats a bit far fetched even for a great connection.

They should just make it so you buy it from a retailer, you are registered and there you have an account to play online.

Yeah, just set up a kiosk at the back of the store that scans your copy's serial number and automatically registers an account.

Having internet as a requirement is nothing serious, just look at steam's popularity: there's over a million PC gamers online on that service at any time during the day.

What will happen is a pirate will register a copy of a singleplayer game, give the retailer false infornation about himself, write a key generator for the game and release it on the internet for any pirate to enjoy? Meanwhile customers forget their logins or keys and have to go back to the store and prove their identity and jump through hoops to get their game back. Then every once in a while you have a case of stolen identity and real customers not only lose their games, but also their credit card ratings.

Hurray, another DRM solution where the real buyers get raped and the pirates dont have to bother with it.

.

It won't stop it, only if somebody has to register their account details it'll slow down piracy because they could be auto-fined and have real money taken away with phantom keys sent out by the retailer guised as a no-cd crack that (if entered by a pirate)will show up under their ID and make them recieve a fine or some other repremand. That'd scare a few people and they wouldn't be able to play online if they had not registered with their bank details.

Why do pirates have such a bad rep? They're just fun lovin' buccaneers traveling the seas spreading joy and candy to children across the globe and are our last bastion of defense against global warmin'!

My solution to piracy is not to worry about it.. If they must have a drm use thigns like Steam which provide the maximum protection possible for the smallest hassel.. Because as it stands Steep system requirements and other things are far more affecting on sales then any thing piracy does.

Piracy will be a problem even if they raised the quality. Look at Crysis, there are millions of torrents and cracked server lists for pirates to play online. Or look at Counter Strike Source, here they sell a hacked version that will let play on any server without being detected.

i think requiring a broadband connection for all games to work is suicide. its understandable for an online games like WOW since u need an internet connection to play anyway..but for something like crysis which is mostly a SP game, its counter productive.

however a slight change and the idea is great. the games system files (dlls and exes and such like) can only be downloaded once u have registered with a valid code. system files dont take up alot of space....so downloading them wouldnt be a huge hassle even on a 56k modem. however to ensure that ppl cant just copy them...they can only be downloaded during the install process and the downloaded files are tailored to just ure PC. the registration system analyses ure PC and sends only what u need. this would make it harder to get the game running on systems that are different to ure own. further more, many changes would be made to the registry (which is pretty much unique to every PC so copying that is alot of hassle). add enctyption to those files also.

its not bullet proof but, used in conjunction with some other systems, it would be another level of hassle for pirates and would put more casual pirates off.

Game companies shoudl start hiring guys to create loads of viruses disguised as game torrents and start filling up the torrent websites with them. Hopefully that'll teach the pirating bastards a lesson.

Make it to where the player is rewarded for not pirating, as is the case with all Blizzard games-their main draw is the MP, and you can't play it if you have a cracked version of the game. It's rather simple, really.

Doom 3 actually has a good system. The first time you run it, your cd key is checked online against Activision's database of known pirated keys. If it is one of them, the game asks for another key.

it doesn't matter pirates would find a way to filter the packets and find the dll's and they would surely find a way to make playing the games even easier, kind of like how there are ISO's these days.

A solution to piracy is to crack down on the pirates. As it is now they arent getting in trouble enough. If you get caught downoading the most that happens is u get a nasty letter from ISP provider telling u its wrong.

The reality is in some ways downloading a game isnt illegal. The digital millenium copyright act is a messed up piece of legislation.

If downloading a game IS illegal though, and the only way for a company to confirm that someone is doing it is to do it themselves (via p2p clients) then they are getting thier information illegally, which doesnt fly.

they don't upload the game, though. they upload directions to the game. otherwise Torrent sites would be down long ago.

I love this logic, you can apply it to anything;

You cannot stop theft

It will always be there

Instead dont stock the goods people want to steal, give people a reason to buy them

All things get stolen, in all stores. Even the police are not 100% effective at stopping theft.

Therefore you shouldn't try to preven theft or anything else that cannot be 100% curbed.

Only one being able to pull off a system like that atm would be Valve I think, and I bet not even them could guarantee the smooth operation of such a system right from the beginning. It would be yet another feature scaring newbies from PC gaming when their firewalls blocked the files or bad wifi cut the connection and made the game crash and so on.

No solution that ends up hurting the legimate paying customers is a good one imo. If I pay for the game, I should be getting the premium service, not be treated like a potential criminal.

Instead dont stock the goods people want to steal, give people a reason to buy them

All things get stolen, in all stores. Even the police are not 100% effective at stopping theft.

Therefore you shouldn't try to preven theft or anything else that cannot be 100% curbed.

no you cant real life is completely different so you can stop with that because there are plenty of ways to stop people in real life

Huh?

You cannot stop piracy.

It will always be there.

Instead dont cater to the people who are going to pirate your game, give people reasons to buy your game.

All games are pirated, on all systems. Even things like Steam are completely futile at stopping pirates.

I love this logic, you can apply it to anything;

You cannot stop theft

It will always be there

Comparing real life theft to software piracy is crazy. They may be the same crime, but there commited in completely different ways. One is possible to subdue, the other is not.
