By then that architecture will be obsoleteHopefully I'll be picking up a 980x in 3 years or so when they're fairly cheap.

Lol.. By that time there will be something both better and more affordable.

But I won't need a new motherboard.
I hope you're kidding. You're really worried about your motherboard lasting you more than another 3 years?

Why shouldn't it?
The board itself would probably "last" well beyond that in terms of durability.. but 3 years is eons in PC hardware time. LGA 1366 has been out, what? 2 years? You really don't think you'll want a full system overhaul 3 years from now?

Not unless I need to. I picked my mobo with the intent to oc the snot out of all my components once they fell behind the times. A 6 core i7 oc'd should be adequate to run new stuff 3-4 years from now, and the mobo itself has all the bells and whistles, so it should at least compete with good budget boards in the future.
I squeeze all I can out of a system when I build it. My last one lasted about 7 years.

I guess we have different philosophies. I tend to do incremental upgrades to stay current enough so that I can max out most games all the time.
and some people told me that I was crazy buying this 1090T cpu, and then even thought it was crazy OVERCLOCKING it afterwards, they will soon see the truth.
:? its only $200 for a 1055T, also the Cryengine 3 for example, can use up to 8 cores. Next year Bulldozer comes outwith an 8 core version and from what I heard there is also a 12 core version. I could only hope by the time new consoles come out that they have at least a 6 or 8 core cpu.Its nice if you wanna pay the money I guess.
There's absolutely no need for it though. I expect next-gen consoles to utilize 4-core CPUs so there's really no need to spend to much money when it wont go to true use.

even for the price i wouldn't go for AMD, all the benchmarks ive seen have i5 and i7's out performing AMDs lateset chips. They are comparing a hexacore to last years models!!! that is severe asscock people. for 300 dollars i could easily get an i5 or i7 that out performs an AMD hexacore. asscock people, asscock.
AiurProtoss
Yah then you need a 300USD mother board to go with the i7.
I can pick up a decent AMD AM3 motherboard for only around 120.
The difference in frame rate in most games is not much when comparing a phenom II 965 to an i5.
i skipped quad core, went hexacore, went from a xeon e3110 (core 2 duo e8400) to this (phenom II 1090T)

I will wait for Intel's more affordable CPUs.millerlight89you have a long wait... unless sandybridge hexacores are cheap....
[QUOTE="dukenukemownsu"]high budget/quality exclusives are dead on pc so having anything more than dualcore is pointless for gaming.lundy86_4
Define high quality. It has the most AAAE's of any system :?
Yeah....Not sure if serious :?
Either way my new Xeon should keep me happy for a while.
I don't see a point to 6 core gaming, it doesn't seem like anyone is really trying to push PC's like they used to, probably because the PC industry seem's to be moving more laptop/mobile focused and you just don't get that kind of hardware in laptops.

The LGA 1156 is also pretty good if your on a budget, you can get a motherboard for about $100 or less. Add a i5 and you will be set for a while.
it makes me sad. direct x 11 exist and no games actually built exclusively for pc with high production values using dx11. owning a 6 core cpu or dx11 card is pointless dude.dukenukemownsu
