The overall core gameplay is simple, but unbelievably good. Best community I've ever had with a game. Ever. And the mods consistently keep things interesting.

I don't know but people find older games fun. I know I still play Duke 3d and Doom on a semi-regular basis and even do Doom multi (I love skulltag) when I feel like it. My main reasoning is that most new games quite frankly suck compared to the older ones that were fun to play and you didn't need achievements to keep you playing. Let's not get into the fact that these new games mostly die within 2 years. When Halo 3 came out almost everyone ran from 2 to 3. When Gears of War II came out most ran from I to II.

Because the gameplay is superior to those crap titles, all of those games are constantly replaced by sequels often not for the better, which divides the community. Counter-strike is and will always be the quitessential FPS and it is still the most competitive FPS on the planet.

when i was 11 years old, me and my friends often skip school to go to a nearby computer shop (this is when i was still living in the Philippines), and that went by for about 4 years or so. it's always fun, because we shout or laugh whenever someone among us died from a headshot or so. it's my first multiplayer fps game. so much fun. besides, you can bind a certain function with a button. i can buy my primary, secondary, grenades, even kevlar with just one button. haha.

Because its a great game. I am by no means a hardcore CS fan, but when im bored i still go back and play for a hour or 2. Its a simple game, that does everything right, and is very fun to play. Many games are like this, as some mentioned already, doom, UT, Quake, and many others even with less player counts such as joint operations. Also i have to say Teamfortress 2 is going to be played 10 years from now, mark my words.

lol I just got off of playing CS:Source for the past couple hours. Frankly its a good, fun game. More serious than TF2, which is just fun, but its a hell of a lot better than 90% of online FPS' today. I remember when I went back to CS:S after playing COD4 for a few months. COD4 just felt so noobish after playing a few rounds on CS:S.

Lots of people are still playing Counter Strike... 1.6 and Source... Its lasted the test of time admirably. Personally I enjoyed it, but was never that good at it - even though I was playing since the very first HL Beta.

In most console FPS maybe. In counter-strike you must learn to shoot and to move.

I used to play CS a bit a while back.

And thats untrue for the most part.

I just played like i would any other MP FPS and did fine.

For real movement skill, a game like warsow is a better.

It's an easy and shallow multi player FPS with a crap community.

Also one must put into account that there are better mods like insurgency, and ZPS, oh and PVK2

the true goodness off counter strike 1.6 and source lays within 5vs5 scrimmages/pugs especialy with friends, i have had some of my greatest online gaming expereinces of all time when all my friends played cs (cs 1.6 that is ;)) playing 5vs5 scrims

pubs can get boring, annoying and repetitive quickly, unless u are a part of a community/clan or constantly play on a server when u get to know the "regulars" of the server

but there are a few great modded cs game stlyes, like gun game, zombie mod, WC3, etc (gungame can be incredibly addicting at times)

but overall, counter strike really shines with competetive/tactial/team gameplay in scrimmages, plus counterstrike 1.6 has the most perfect/balanced gunplay i have and probably ever will play in a fps

Not really. I'm not sure I need to elaborate on this as anyone who was has played shooters extensively could write an essay on how CS differs from Quake/UT/etc. The ingame mechanics as well as micro, macro, and team game are entirely different.

Like so http://archive.gamespy.com/stats/ . Note keep in mind that counter for hl2 is wrong because my steam server brower shows different results.

A good portion of the games on there are older games. Quake 3 arena for christ sake is #8 thing came out like in 99.

You know what that means? Is current fps games are weak sauce serious weak sauce. You'd be surprised how many people are playing like counter-strike source with geforce gtx 285s and ati 4870s and stuff; they buy these video cards to play on the side games like crysis and stuff but the real gameplay is still these older games. Todays fps games are just major weak sauce.

CS not only made popular, but it practically invented the online competetive FPS.

While it was never my cup of tea (hate waiting in between rounds, so I just play gungame), I can certainly acknowledge it's achievements.

Haha, not in online games. You need mIRC for them. It's basically a ton of people who sit in a chat relay system thing and you join the 5v5 scrim or whatever is being played whenever you want.

U call it a hunk of junk (i assume hink is a typo), i think thats pretty narrow minded. I mean, they game is like one of the longest running multiplayer games ever, and a lot more people have played it then cod4 or something. Sure u might not like it but it sure as hell cannot be called junk. Its a pioneer of Online FPS, refining it to almost perfection for like a decade before stuff like cod4 came out with acheivements and upgrades and whatever.

Because despite all the complaints, its a pretty balanced shooter with an active mod community that produces plenty of custom maps and mods that help keep the gameplay fresh. Plus its just damn fun.

Because for one 1- Its Fun..like alot of fun 2- Highly Competitive Community. I mean the community has been playing for so long, and it definantly the cream of the crop competition imo. 3- Modding community is also very big.

Counter-Strike is the most successful and popular FPS ever made. It really popularized the FPS genre. It has tons of Mods. Takes a good amount of skill to be good at it. Personally I abuse the AWP. CS also invented the process of using the knife to humiliate somebody.

If you mean in the general sense that you are playing a game with guns and shooting stuff... sure. The difference is not only what you do, but how you do it. I can give you a big write up on CS game mechanics if you want.
