Past games have been great, it might be niche in the idea that only a small amount of people have come to appreciate it, but I dare say it's niche in design. As far as JRPGs go, I find these to be highly accessible JRPGs. They certainly aren't as punishingly difficult as the other SMT games but have gameplay that feels good. They have great localization in North America (not sure about other regions). They have great characters, excellent balance between dungeon crawling and social aspects. Great writing, art design, usually a catchy soundtrack. Kept in a modern setting and not the dime-a-dozen fantasy settings of mythical ancient times.
The big mistake regarding this series has been its niche base, it remains niche because they've really not given anybody a good opportunity to try it. The games are at the top of their game but they only release these games on one system. Furthermore, didn't help that it came out on PS2 back when people were transitioning to PS3, they never did a thing to bring those games to (then) current gen consoles like PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, or even PC. Their problem, IMO, is lack of exposure. Hell, even last gen was the perfect opportunity for the Persona games to make a name for themselves, after all Square Enix was a massive disappointment with their long delays for the poorly received FFXIII, the delays to FFvsXIII (now FFXV), and that other generically bad JRPGs like Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscovery and Star Ocean: Last Hope. They never jumped on the opportunity.
This series needs a tremendous effort to reach out to a greater audience, they already nailed making these games great, so even if they keep making good games then it isn't going to do anything to grow the base. They need to reach out to a greater audience. Make it for other systems, make it for Xbox One and PC. At the very least, if Atlus is actively cheerleading for Sony by not releasing on Xbox One, make it for PC. Surely with more people trying it, more people talking about it, stronger word of mouth, the series will grow in a meaningful way. And, even if there's some contractual restriction with Sony that prevents them from doing this, then make a Persona 3/4 definitive collection or something. Give people a good real chance to appreciate the series by porting it to PC/XB1. That way when Sony is like "Persona 5 is a PS4 exclusive", that will carry weight with more people.
